Rumor: iPhone 8 won’t ship with wireless charger, USB-C cable or headphone jack adapter

By , Feb 11, 2017

Japanese blog Mac Otakara claimed Saturday that iPhone 8’s rumored wireless charging feature may require a dedicated wireless charger accessory that customers would need to purchase separately. Citing reliable sources within Apple’s supply chain, the story goes on to say that iPhone 8 also won’t ship with the 3.5mm headphone jack adapter found in the iPhone 7 box nor will it come with a Lightning to USB-C cable as some have hoped.

If I’m reading the machine-translated text correctly, wireless charging on iPhone 8 should be an optional feature requiring an additional purchase of a separate accessory. That accessory is said to be based on technology from Chinese company Luxshare that has built wireless charging coils for Apple Watch’s inductive charger.

It’s unclear how much convenience the optional wireless charger accessory might bring if it would need to be plugged into the wall, as opposed to the widely-adopted USB cord. Assuming Mac Otakara’s sources are correct, iPhone 8 will use inductive wireless charging akin to Apple Watch or Samsung’s Qi-based Fast Charge stand rather than have truly wireless long-range charging capabilities.

The Japanese report claims that a Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter will no longer come in the box alongside 2017 iPhones. Similarly, new iPhones are said to ship with a Lightning to USB-A cable rather than a Lightning to USB-C one.

In other words, Apple’s Lightning to USB-C cable is expected to remain an optional purchase—those wishing to connect their iPhone 8 to the new MacBook Pro will need to spend extra cash on a Lightning to USB-C cable.

The publication reiterates previous reports which called for three new iPhone models this year: the LCD-based (and mostly iterative) 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone 7s and iPhone 7 Plus models, respectively, plus a brand new iPhone 8 device with an all-new industrial design and an OLED display measuring five inches diagonally.

Unlike earlier reports from Nikkei and KGI Securities, sources mentioned in the Mac Otakara story are adamant that only OLED-based iPhones will in fact adopt an all-glass design with wireless charging capabilities.

I sincerely hope that means they might bring the 3.5 jack back…

    • askep3

Not happening lol, as much as I want it back too, apples not about to go back on something they changed

      • ravinigga

True apple done this before. With cd drive and floppy and now of pc does the same

    • SpideyRules

Are people really still whining about this? Get over it, mate…

      • Blip dude

People are still whining about people whining about the iPhone missing a headphone jack?? Get over it, mate. . .

      • Reilitas

Are people still whining about people who are supposedly whining about people whining about the iPhone missing a headphone jack??? Get over it, mate…

      • Oscar

        Hahaha! Amazing.

      • SpideyRules

You win the dumbest comment of the day…lol. Too idiotic to see the contradiction in your own response.

      • Blip dude

And you’re too idiotic to not get that it was a joke. You think I now give 2 s*** about it?? Talk with your wallet, end of story.

      • tariq

Dude, ill stop buying any product that gets rid of headphones jack. I hate charging earphones, that shiet is annoying. I went from apple to samsung and will happily go to LG, OnePlus or MI Mix if I have to. Charging watch, phone and earphone is just too much for me. No thanks.

      • Nevertrending

Thinking about going over to Mi Mix myself, the phone looks so beautiful. I’ll just wait for the next iPhone keynote to confirm my decision

      • tariq

Yeah, I’m just waiting to see what the S8 ah G6 look like before making my final decision

      • ravinigga

Well the other brands Will follow and the headphones companies are happy with the direction what Apple did

      • tariq

There’s going to be lower end phones that won’t. So I’ll be ok

      • ravinigga

True bit Again headphones companies will now continue make lighting usb c and Bluetooth types only

      • tariq

The Internet will have 3.5 earphones, ill be fine lol (ebay, Amazon, wish, letgo, etc.)

  • Siri Tim Cook Holness

Seriously they won’t make the 8 smaller than the plus

  • craig

does this really come as a surprise with apple? if they could, they would ship just the phone and have you buy the plug and cable separate.

    • Reilitas

They wouldn’t ever do that. People are just being obnoxious at this point.

      • craig

I’m not being obnoxious, its just how it feels with how news keeps going for apple

  • Iliyan

I’d be fine with no 3.5mm headphone jack if they switch to USB-C on the iPhone. The 7 currently has only one, proprietary port (that manufacturers need to pay to create accessories for). In the mean time, I’m happily using 3rd party 3.5mm headphones on my 6s 🙂

  • Blip dude

“iPhone 8’s rumored wireless charging feature may require a dedicated wireless charger accessory that customers would need to purchase separately.”

And if this is true then so far this phone won’t be a must buy for me at launch. 6S+ is doing just fine, rather watch people b**** and moan about who Apples website is slow and how they won’t be able to get one at launch, year after year after year, then at the right time I’ll upgrade.

    • John

If the wireless charging is compatible with exisiting hardware, why would this be an issue? Making it compatible with other chargers means that you have the option of wired charging or you can go buy your own wireless charger.

Too many people EXPECT Apple to just give them shit because they feel entitled.

      • Blip dude

No not at all personally, especially when it comes to this so called wireless charging gimmick. But I will be honest, I am looking for the tiny excuses upon myself to delay my upgrade. So this is just one of them.

    • Julio Hernandez

I mean to be fair the Galaxy S7 doesn’t come with the wireless charging pad and it’s supposed to be purchased separately so I wouldn’t expect Apple to include it either. Just my observation. I on the other hand am excited for this years iPhone since I also have a 6s Plus

      • GUY

I gave my iPhone 5s to my my mother ( still a great phone ) , I got a lumia 1520 and I’m excited for the

  • techfreak23

Makes sense about the cable since most people don’t have USB C at this point but if they stop including the Lightning to 3.5 adapter that would be ridiculous.

    • John

Why is that? 12 months after the first non-3.5mm phone has been released means there’s 12 months of extra MFi-headphones, accessories and Bluetooth gear on the market.

How much longer would you expect Apple to give away dongles?

      • Anonymouse

There hasn’t been many Bluetooth headphones/iem with a lightning connector released over the last 12 months perhaps more w1 chip ones and their quality of sound falls below wired ones imo. More importantly Apple has stuck to their current Bluetooth codec which is equally as crap for quality of sound compared to wired imo. So whilst I do look forward to wireless, the last 12 months has seen no improvement as I would have hoped. It’s the reason I returned my iphone 7 one week after it was introduced and fair dinkum I lost the lightning to 3.5mm adapter. To Apple’s credit the manager didn’t charge me for the lost adapter and surprisingly said he agreed with me that the then current quality of bluetooth/wifi sound was very unApple.

      • Natalie

There’s loads of lightning enabled headphones on the market. there wont be any w1 enabled bluetooth devices simply because that’s apple’s way of making their devices better than the rest. All bluetooth headphones will work with an Apple device but only Apple’s own headphones will sync across iCloud. They had to allow 3rd party lightning accessories because that market is a massive money maker

      • Blip dude

I haven’t seen much MFi-headphones out on the market yet. I know it’s only been about 5 months, I know it’s still early, but other than Apple’s EarPods, what other headphones under $50 are lightning compatible??

      • StreetBatHunter

For as long as people need them that’s bullsh*t how they’re becoming dictators with how people want to use their own devices that they purchase. Only you fanboys try to justify it foh

  • ProllyWild

    iPhone 8 slogan.

“The revolutionary new iPhone……you figure this shit out yourself!”

    • GUY

      Uh I love those

    • smtp25

that you will have to buy in pieces to get all the features 🙁

  • Shan

Apple isnt consistent anymore like it used to be.

    • John

      You’re basing this on rumours.

      • Shan

Still ok to assume so based on current releases

      • Natalie

Only really a basis from the 7/plus. Even their 6 line was just a smaller one and a larger one. only the latest release has changes in hardware

      • Shan

Still enough to assume that they aren’t consistent anymore like they used to be. Examples are the headphone jack and USB C. I’m not complaining at all about what has been going on but i just wanted to point it out.

      • Natalie

Yeah, I agree. I’m not happy at all with the way Apple has handled it. USB-C will probably not come to the iPhone for a LONG time but the headphone jack was annoying. They should have offered the dongle AND the jack in the iPhone 7, then ditched the jack on the next iPhone. Would have made conversion a little easier

      • Shan

Exactly. The headphone jack I don’t mind, but the fact that it’s still there on the Macs and potentially iPad too still kind of shows the inconsistency. And why isn’t there lighting to USBC shipping with the iPhones instead? Wouldn’t that go better with their new macs? It’s stuff like that. And all the different sized devices that they have now. They didn’t have this many different sized devices as before.

      • brainless

Natalie … instead of waiting for a LONG time to get a usb-c.. grab a LONG banana and stick it in your … and probably will feel more happy and satisfied..

      • Natalie

That’s a little bit rude don’t you think?

      • Jay

The head phone jack lasted longer than the 30pin connector, thats pretty consistent.

      • Shan

I’m not talking about the length of time it’s been present. It’s the only product in Apple’s line of products that doesn’t have a headphone jack. That is what I’m talking about. So much for their “courage”. Getting rid of the headphone jack on all products would’ve been courage, not just one. If they felt like it made so much sense to get rid of it off of one product, why not the others? They should’ve found other reasons for the other products. That’s what I mean by inconsistent. Again, I don’t care that the headphone jack is gone from the iPhone, but it’s just inconsistent which is the point I’m trying to make.

      • Jay

You cannot say it’s the only product with out a headphone jack. The watch doesn’t have a headphone jack either. Does not having it on present on two products make it consistent? Or how about three, Apple Tv. Non of them had it to begin with. It’s their paragotive to start one product at a time to remove certain features. Think back to the ipod touch where the 5th gen all of a sudden didn’t have an ambient light sensor. Even with plenty of space for it to go on the inside they chose to remove it. It doesn’t matter why they remove what they want when they want because they do what they want to do.

      • Natalie

        1) the iPhone is the only device that is missing it. 2) the apple TV uses HDMI audio and you need to use the headphone jack on your TV for that. 3) removing a feature because it wasn’t efficient for that product is different than removing a feature due to “courage” and only removing it on 1 device or adding a USB-C ports only their MacBooks and then making you pay for a Lightning to USB-C cable for your phone that should have came with one in the first place if they are pushing USB-C so hard.

      • Jay

No the watch is missing it also. You can listen to music from the watch and your forced to used bluetooth as well. They removed it from the phone because they wanted to remove it and did not care how many of us use and want it. They should supply the cables instead, I do agree with that.

      • Natalie

Ah, true. I didn’t even think of the Apple Watch lol

      • angry one

        3) get a life

      • Shan

Apple does do what they want to do. I agree with the Apple Watch point, but the Apple TV is an Apple TV. It’s ridiculous to have a headphone jack on that anyways.

      • Jay

At that point I was only pointing out that the phone wasn’t the only product with out it not the sanity of it being there lol.

      • Shan

Yea but why bring up the Apple TV? Ofcourse it wasn’t going to have a headphone jack. That was clearly an exclusion

      • Jay

I brought it up for the same reason apple removed what they wanted. We wanted too lol.

      • Shan

That honestly makes no sense. You’re comparing apples and oranges lol

      • Jay

courage made me do it lol.

      • GUY

yes but of all the rumors these sound more believable. This rumor sound like “the iPhone 5s will have the A7 ship” of course it will because the last generation ships are called called A6 A5 ….
But most of the other rumours sound like “the iPhone 6 will have a sapphire screen glass” we all know how that turned out.

    • It’s sad because you can’t charge your iPhone with the new MacBook Pro’s without their shitty dongles.

  • Mykel

If they made USB-C the default I’d be a lot more pissed than lack of a headphone jack. Not everyone has a brand new MacBook guys.

I guess the argument could be made that I probably have enough cables already. I do. I just don’t think the standard is really there yet.

All this cable ‘fragmentation’ is getting pretty ridiculous already.

  • Agneev Mukherjee

    Need that wallpaper!

  • tariq

Ayyy. Type C would of been great, then all I would have needed is one charger in my car for androids and apple users

  • pnh

Rumor: iPhone 8 to ship without a power on/off switch. You will need to run your battery down to power it off unless you purchase the lightning power toggle available at the Apple Store for $49.99.

    • GUY

And for $19.99 you get a toggle for that toggle

  • Jerry

Won’t ship with wireless charger? Why won’t they let go of that fkn standerd charger even the plus comes with it

  • rockdude094

Apple is really pushing innovation here. Definitely going to pickup an iPhone 8 as soon as it comes out and replace my crappy iPhone 7 ..

    • ravinigga

True but people see only oh apple get rid of it because money.
Otherhand is true but if nobody start it then we never get better things

      • rockdude094

        I was being sarcastic lol

  • Juschan

So does that mean they r giving a pair of airpods at least with the iPhone 8? Because mo headphones at all or just onec you can not use would be strange

  • rockdude094

I was being sarcastic.. but in the eyes of the general consumer its new
