Google rolling out overhauled ride services experience in Maps for iOS

Google today announced that expanded ride options and more actionable information are now available to users of the mobile Google Maps application on iOS and Android.

You can now book, complete and pay for an Uber ride without ever leaving Google Maps, as well as browse useful information related to your destination during the ride with menus, hours and other helpful details only a swipe away.

As you can see on the Android screenshots below, Google Maps will soon display more types of ride options and more actionable information. Rather than put up a long list of ride service providers and ride options like before (left), the refreshed app will display a new carousel of ride service providers in your vicinity (right). Simply tap on a preferred provider to see a complete list of ride options along with any special offers or promos.

As mentioned, Google Maps for iOS now supports booking, completing and paying for an Uber ride without ever leaving the app, even if you don’t have the Uber app installed on your device. You only need to sign into your existing Uber account to book a ride, track your driver on the map and connect with them from within the Google Maps app.

The video embedded further below depicts browsing information about your destination while en route with menus, hours and other helpful details available to you with a swipe.

The overhauled ride services experience began rolling out this morning. It’s a staggered release so not everyone will get these new features at the same time.

Apple’s own mapping application includes extension points on iOS 10 to support integration with ride hailing and restaurant booking apps, permitting users to order their ride or food and pay for it via Apple Pay without leaving the app.
