RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic 1.0 for iOS iPhone screenshot 006

Games maker Atari today released RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch on the App Store. Not to be confused with Atari’s earlier release RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile, the $5.99 iOS title includes the best features found in the 1999 RollerCoaster Tycoon PC game and RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 for Xbox, which released in 2002. The new RollerCoaster Tycoon mobile experience includes 95 classic park scenarios from PC/Xbox titles.

There’s also a built-in park designer, Retina-optimized graphics based on the visual style in Chris Sawyer’s original RollerCoaster Tycoon PC games, three downloadable content packs and much more.

Build the ultimate theme park

Your goal in RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic has not changed from the previous games: build the greatest theme park the world has ever seen. This involves not only managing and customizing your theme park with building tools and custom coaster constructions but also keeping your guests happy with various perks such as food and drink stalls, water rides and even transport rides to take them around the park.

You can customize the park by building scenery, fine-tune the landscape, route the footpaths and more. Your park can be built from scratch or from pre-made templates that let you quickly create a functional facility. The game’s managerial aspect requires you to run the park’s marketing and finances, organize your staff and so forth.

There are hundreds of types of roller coasters and rides to choose from and dozens of different shops, stalls and facilities that you can use to build your dream theme park. Three optional expansion packs—Wacky Worlds, Time Twister and Toolkit—are available via In-App Purchase, here’s what they bring:

Wacky Worlds Expansion Pack

Find your passport and pack your bags. Wacky Worlds takes players on the ultimate trip around the globe in 17 new park scenarios. Includes exotic rides, profitable concessions and the most famous landmarks known to man including the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, Statue of Liberty, Great Wall of China and more. Each location is packed with opportunities for success, fun and unique challenges.

Time Twister Expansion Pack

Travel through time with 14 new park scenarios based on historical and fantasy time-themes and build a park that is truly a blast from the past (or future if you like). Play in a Prehistoric amusement park decorated with huge animated T-Rex’s and coasters such as the Raptor Ride, or choose from Mythological times, the Dark Ages, the Rock & Roll crazed ‘50s, the Future or the Roaring Twenties.

Toolkit

Park Scenario Editor: Design and build your own amazing parks – Make them as easy or as challenging as you want, using your choice of scenery and rides! Includes a number of Six Flags parks to get you started.

Ride Designer: Build, test, fine-tune and theme your own awesome roller coaster designs in the Ride Designer before saving them for use while playing.

Import and Export: Share your saved parks, park scenarios and ride designs with friends, and try out their creations too! (Includes the ability to import most saved parks and scenarios created with the original RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 PC game).

Pricing and availability

Let me quickly point out that these expansion packs are the only content that require an In-App Purchase and In-App Purchases are not used anywhere else in the game. RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic is a $5.99 download from the App Store.

The premium game requires iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with iOS 7.0 or later.

WOW! I remember this one from the very early 90s! I’m hoping the game is similar and they kept the “retro” aspect of it.

Early 90s? It was released in 99

RollerCoaster Tycoon is a construction and management simulation video game that simulates amusement park management. Developed by Chris Sawyer Productions and published by Hasbro Interactive, the game was released for Microsoft Windows in 1999 and was later ported to the Xbox by Infogrames in 2003. It is the first game in the RollerCoaster Tycoon series.
