During its ‘hello again’ event on Thursday, Apple showed off a new 27-inch 5K LG UltraFine display. SVP Phil Schiller described it as the “ultimate docking station” because it has multiple Thunderbolt 3 ports, and can even charge the new MacBook Pro.

Schiller also noted that Apple teamed up with LG to build the display specifically for the new Pro, so it’s unclear what the future is of Apple-branded displays. There have been rumors it’s building one, but it may have decided the numbers aren’t there.

The LG UltraFine 5K display is pricey at $1,300, and Apple says it won’t be available until December. There is also a 21-inch 4K version of the UltraFine, which has a resolution of 4096-by-2304. It’s priced at $700 and starts shipping in 5-6 weeks.

  • Why is the top bezel so thick? I can’t believe this is what it looks like because Apple said they worked with LG on this monitor. Looks outdated.

Not that I’m excusing the design, but it looks like it’s a little wider on the top bezel to accommodate the camera.

    • Jon20

That’s the part Apple contributed to. You know how they love their bezels. Lol.

  • techfreak23

Pretty outrageously priced, especially since it’s being made by LG. If it was a unibody aluminum design like the Thunderbolt/Cinema Display, those prices might be a little more acceptable.

Probably the same panel LG supplied for the 5K imac. Wonder why it’s only USB 3.1 gen 1 and not gen 2 like the new MBPs? You’d think the “ultimate docking station” would include at least Ethernet.

  • IJustWantTruth

Can my iMac 5K retina drive two of these new monitors? If so, what adapters are needed if any?
