WSJ: iPhone 7 to feature similar design, bigger changes coming next year

By , Jun 21, 2016

Another report is out on Tuesday claiming that the iPhone 7 will closely resemble its 6 and 6s predecessors. Citing people familiar with the matter, The Wall Street Journal says that the company plans to break with its recent patten of overhauling the iPhone design every two years.

Thus, Apple’s new handset this year will only feature subtle changes. They’ll maintain the current 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays, as well as the overall design. The biggest planned change for the iPhone 7, the Journal says, will be the removal of the standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

At a meeting with an Apple executive last month, one of the company’s China-based engineers asked why this year’s model lacked a major design change in keeping with Apple’s usual two-year cycle. The answer, one person at the meeting recalled, was that the new technology in the pipeline will take time to implement.

People familiar with the matter said some features that Apple hopes to integrate into iPhones, such as curved screens, weren’t ready for this year’s models.

The report notes that Apple does plan bigger design changes for 2017, the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone. These changes could include a dramatically new design with edge-to-edge OLED display, no physical Home button and a Touch ID sensor build directly into the screen.

Of course most of this lines up with previous rumors, but coming from The Wall Street Journal certainly adds weight to the speculation.

iPhone sales are going to be ugly this year.

    • Jack Wong

      I wonder why

      • Chindavon

Your guess is as good as mine

      • Jack Wong

I guess people are expecting too much from each new phone, we will never get all the great features from the same phone, always a little by little…

I will still upgrade it since I can sell my 6s for a reasonable price.

      • Chindavon

This will be the first year that I skip if not much has changed. I’m just disappointed that Apple’s cash cow is so behind in tech. To me, it seems like they are close to being lapped twice, but that’s just my own perspective. I know that they need extra time to mass produce any new tech because of the sheer volume that they demand, but it’s still mind boggling how other smaller companies are pushing out some cool new tech and modern design.

      • Jack Wong

I haven’t upgrade my Macbook Air for 3 years… I used to upgrade it every 1-2 years.

I am not buying any other brand also because of the Mac OS + Virtual Box

      • Rowan09

        Behind in what tech?

      • Chindavon

My iPhone any I are envious of an OLED screen, Edge to Edge screen, smaller bezels, wide angle camera lens, Laser auto focus, Fast Charging, Water resistant/proof, wireless charging, and Speakers are horrendous. It just baffles me on how Apple is moving at a snail pace especially when it comes to the iphone, their main money maker. It’s like they’ve gotten lazy. I’ve had many inklings of wanting to try Android, but my work flow and home setup is better with all my other Apple devices.

      • Rowan09

Wireless charging currently is a joke, the only way it makes sense for Apple is if they get rid of the headphone jack, the speakers on my iPhone 6S Plus is better than my S7 Edge, water resistance is cool and I believe they are going to move to water resistant devices especially since the 6S Plus is very much water resistant, Edge to Edge display is not a must it’s a personal preference, they improve their camera every year like everyone else and I would like fast charging.

      • Chindavon

Ya, it’s not true wireless charging. There’s no denying that Apple is playing catchup in a lot of categories. More RAM would be most excellent. The extra GIG of RAM makes a huge difference. Imagine at LEAST doubling that to 4GB and it will be that much faster. Especially how iOS manages it all real nice like.

  • Bugs Bunnay

    Yay remove that headphone jack

Have a felling this will be the 1st iPhone to sell less than the years before

I’m waiting to buy edge to edge oled display iPhone

  • Lit

I’m really hoping Apple isn’t switching to 3-year cycles, since it’s already boring that they are doing 2-years.

    • Bill

Admit it…you kids these days would be bored if Apple introduced a brand new phone even every 6 months…maybe less. Technology in general is really wreaking havoc on your attention spans. Sad sight to see, to be honest. Not trying to be condescending, either. Please don’t take it that way. I guess it just is what it is at this point. Nice knowing ya, world. You could have been great.

      • Lit

Please stop forgetting to take your meds.

      • Bill

Sure dude. Pills for everything. Another hallmark of the wonderful times we are living in.

  • Guy

I wanted bigger changes for iOS 10. Some parts of iOS 10 UI design disappoint me. I really not looking forward to iPhone 7 with iOS 10 attached.

    • Abhijeet Gupta

This year’s Nexus along with Android N, looks much more promising, I’ll retain my 6s and buy a Nexus ..

  • Fardeen Beharry

at this beyond, i dont care about this years iphone

  • Abhijeet Gupta

I don’t know why this company is obsessed with making this phone as thin as a credit card. at some point, usability starts to degrade. the 6 and 6s are thin enough. try putting a bigger battery in there so that people don’t have to constantly charge their phones.

    • therealjjohnson

the iPhone 6s was thicker than the 6. The iPhone 7 is rumored to be thicker than the 6s.

I have 6 Plus, and I am waiting for 2017 iPhone

    • iOS Kush

      Same here.

    • Raymond Beavers

Same here, it’s not worth upgrading if it’s practically going to be a 6s without the headphones. I didn’t upgrade to the 6s because it pretty much was 3D Touch, a better camera, and slightly faster.

    • rodius

Same here. Not worth the upgrade. Either I stick with my 6+ or go nexus this year. No way I’m buying the same phone to have it for another 2 years

  • Valinor

Well I guess I’ll be buying the Samsung Note 7. ByeBye Apple.

    • Mike M. Powell

    • tariq

Since you getting a new phone. I highly recommend s7 edge. I have it for a while now, good phone. Good battery! And please do not buy the VR. It over heats the phone and phone just goes to cool down mode every 40-50mins.. I got VR for free but just thought I add that in in case you considering buying one. Hope this comment helps. Bye

      • Valinor

I dont like the galaxy s7 design. Looks plastic and its a fingerprint magnet.
Lets hope the note 7 looks better.

  • Loke1988

Good Im just keeping my 6 and going off contract to save money. Thanks for making the decision easy Apple. I never thought Id be considering a Droid but it has crossed my mind a few times recently I don’t like where Apple is heading.

    • Abhijeet Gupta

Yeah especially after using a nexus 6p for a while, I’m also drooling towards droid

      • Loke1988

    • tariq

If you moving to android. S7 edge is great. I highly recommend it(:
Just writting this in case u wanted an opinion.

      • Loke1988

Thank you I did appreciate that!

      • Abhijeet Gupta

S7 edge and the upcoming note & nexus phones

      • tariq

If you’re patient, yeahh. But if you are like me.. lol

  • J3ff

Apple may be losing a customer! ME. Im hoping for a better camera, 32gb standard and a better battery and ill be happy!

  • n0ahcruz3

save your benjamins and upgrade next year quit spoiling apple by buying iPhones every year with little changes lol

  • OneBigInFiniteJoinT

Damn it. this is the year i wanted to upgrade from my iPhone 5.. now i am getting double minded… 😐

    • tariq

S7 edge is a good upgrade. I love it so far!

  • Jon20

I’ve also felt that the 2 yr cycle (S model) is a waste. I always get the first refresh cycle and then when I see the S model, it seems that they could have put that in the first model to begin with. Plus you feel like you’ve had enough time with the phone that your are ready for an upgrade. But for just a few spec bumps seems like a waste of time when that could have been given at once while they test other technology for a new phone 3 years later. Maybe update some software in the meantime. Look at the iPhone SE, it got Live Photos with just a long press and didn’t require 3D Touch. That could have been done with a software update. I’m JB so I’ve installed tweaks that do the same and its worked pretty well. This may be the route they need to go.

    • smtp25

The theory is they spend the money on all the tooling to build the 6 model, to recoup and make more money they go with the 6S model and add in a few extra minutes. Phones are innovating that fast anymore so if you put them all in the 1st release you will have a drought the next year.

  • Patrick Conley

if you will be in the world by next year

  • HamptonWalley

This is the 10th generation iPhone, why are they for the 11th generation preparing the big refresh?

  • I guess it will be named iPhone 6SE

  • tabbionline

    I guess I won’t be upgrading…
