Apple’s reportedly decided not to add Smart Connector to iPhone 7

An unconfirmed iPhone 7 part which leaked out of China back in March had us wondering whether the iconic smartphone might come outfitted with the iPad Pro’s Smart Connector. Since then, various analysts and sources have speculated that this could indeed be the case, including the fairly reliable Japanese blog Mac Otakara.

Today, however, Mac Otakara reports that Apple has decided not to include the Smart Connector on the iPhone 7 after all.

The report does not give the reason for shelving the Smart Connector on the next iPhone aside from simply stating that’s the decision Apple has made—which indicates that the company had been considering making an iPhone with the Smart Connector before it ultimately abandoned such plans.

They are taking every cool feature from the iPhone 7. I don’t get it. Maybe to implement on the 7 Pro/8?

I feel like I should get the S7 while its still new, I’m still on my iPhone 5 and I see absolutely nothing that makes me want to spend a small fortune on the iPhone 7 (apart from my crap battery of course).

Can someone please tell me how you get an iOS theme on android? Because I’d rather have an iOS themed S7 edge rather than the next iPhone.

      • nonchalont

Exactly. The s7 comes with the virtual reality headset. That thing is cool.

Yeah, thinking my iPhone 6 may be another 3 year phone like my 4S was… I’m thinking the wait for the better screens, integrated home button and wireless charging will be worth it, instead of another iterative upgrade…

    • isoulhack3r3born

      Likewise !!

    • nonchalont

Its not worth upgrading every year for me (not others). I went from i4 to i5s. Im still rocking my iPhone 5s. It’s still treating me right. I just wish for more battery life now, but it’s not a necessity. I’m out of contract also. I really enjoyed playing with the Samsung 3D headset. Makes me want to buy the Samsung phone. I know Apple will come out with theirs sometime soon. 3D headsets are the next best thing for technology.

  • Rowan09

I was always curious of how it would work with a case since almost everyone uses a case. I would assume they would make smart connector compatible cases.

  • chjode

So they’re saying I should keep my 6 for another year? Guess I’ll save some $$$ this fall.

  • therealjjohnson

So basically no one knows what the phone will have. First everyone knew it was getting rid of the headphone jack, then it wasn’t. Now this.

For the first time in my life I am NOT looking forward to the new iPhone. I know Apple has enough money to survive if they don’t step it up much on this next release but it’s going to be BAD in the press and for us tech geeks. And no a stupid camera upgrade with extra stabilization and a snappier Touch ID will NOT cut it.

    • Rowan09

But that’s what they did with the S7 and it’s being praised.

      • nonchalont

S7 came with the 3D headset. That thing is dope!

      • Rowan09

Yes when it was first released that was the promoting they had with the buy 1 get 1 free deal. It has potential, but right now it’s meh.

      • nonchalont

It has great potential. Think about movies, fights, live events, seeing the world through those goggles. It’s “beta” right now but it will be the next wave of technology. It’s not going anywhere soon.

      • Rowan09

I understand. I watched some shows on Netflix with it but it’s just not as clear as watching my TV. It’s good don’t get me wrong, but it’s not great right now and time will tell of the potential. Plus the fact you have a huge thing on your face isn’t great either.

After reading the comments everyone seems dasiy downers ish. Yeah perhaps it might not be a smart conector, but i think apple will implement some form a wireless charging at some point. And the iphone every year always has at lest one major headline feture and i know this year wont be any different.

    • Blip dude

Thing is, is that one major headline feature justifiable enough to upgrade??

      • Anonymous

It wont be just one little thing though. There will be few little things. Like it is each year.

      • Honestly I don’t think they need to do anything anymore other than continue adding better processors and kill 16GB iPhones already and make the baseline model 32GB or 64GB. I don’t think there’s much innovation left in hardware, pretty much everything has already been done. They just need to keep improving iOS.

  • Jamessmooth

It’s getting really, REALLY hard to get excited about this phone.

    • nonchalont

Apple doesn’t have a steady grasp on the smartphone market anymore. Well neither smartphone company does. It takes a headline feature to gain control. Samsung is neck-to-neck with Apple if you believe it or not. I played with a Samsung phone and they are nice. They have a lot of features built into their stock apps. Apple should have more features in their stock photos app, camera app, messages, email, notes. Apple should have it where we don’t need 3rd party apps (unless we choose) to draw on a picture I took or input text and arrows.

  • Rook HD

relax, people. It’s just a rumor. Apple should (probably) know by now their upgrade strategy won’t work forever. Stock down and stuff. The iphone 7 may be the one we’ve been waiting for.

    • nonchalont

Yup, have to thank the smartphone competition or else Apple would have tried to monopolize the market where they would only need to upgrade so often.
