The first trailer for LucasFilm’s upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story film went online and boy does it look great. Set shortly before the events of Star Wars: Episode IV—A New Hope, the story of Rogue One centers on a group of Rebel spies on a mission to steal the plans for the Galactic Empire’s new weapon, the Death Star.

Directed by Gareth Edwards and written by Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz from an idea by visual effects supervisor John Knoll, Rogue One will be the very first standalone movie set in the Star Wars universe.

You won’t believe your eyes

Rogue One tells the story of Jyn Erso, a Rebel spy played by Felicity Jones, and other “unlikely heroes who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star” before it can be used to enforce the Emperor’s rule, as per the official description.

Here’s the official teaser trailer for the movie which debuted on Good Morning America.

In addition to Felicity Jones, Rogue One will star Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen and Alan Tudyk.

Star Wars Anthology

As mentioned, Rogue One is billed as the first Star Wars Anthology film.

By that, I mean that Rogue One diverts from the plot of the Star Wars saga you know and love: it is set in the Star Wars universe, but stands in its own right as a standalone story.

Disney CEO and Apple board member Bob Iger confirmed three years ago that LucasFilm and his company would develop two standalone Star Wars films, each individually written by Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Winberg.

The two spin-off movies will exist within the vast Star Wars universe that George Lucas has created, but won’t crossover with the films of the sequel trilogy. Instead, they’ll be more like origin stories of sorts.

Both standalone films shall be released under the umbrella of Star Wars Anthology. Another interesting tidbit: Rogue One will be the first Star Wars movie without any Jedi.

Coming in time for Christmas

Principal photography began at Elstree Studios, near London during early August 2015 with some scenes shot in Laamu Atoll in Maldives, as well as in Iceland and Jordan.

The film is being produced by Lucasfilm and will be distributed by Walt Disney Studios.

Rogue One will be released on December 16, 2016.

What do you think about this movie so far, based on the trailer?
