WhatsApp for iOS bold italics strikethrough teaser 001

With more than one billion people turning to Facebook-owned WhatsApp on any given day to exchange instant messages with their friends and family, you may be interested in some new formatting options that the app has quietly introduced recently.

Of course, you’ve always been able to spice up your messaging in WhatsApp and make your chats more expressive with emoticons.

That being said, WhatsApp for iPhone now permits folks to format their chats with a trio of new styling options—bold, italics and strikethrough. Rather than introduce new buttons to access the new stylings, WhatsApp requires you to enclose parts of text inside special formatting codes.

In this brief tutorial, you’ll learn how to make and word, phrase or passage of text in your WhatsApp conversations bold, italics or strikethrough.

How to use bold styling in WhatsApp

1) Add an asterisk character (*) before and after the specific words or passages of text to make them bold.

How to use italics styling in WhatsApp

1) Add an underscore character (_) before and after the specific words or passages of text to make them italics.

How to use strikethrough styling in WhatsApp

1) Add a tilde character (~) before and after the specific words or passages of text to make them strikethrough.

The new stylings appear across WhatsApp’s mobile apps.

You can also style your chats using these new formatting options in WhatsApp’s recently launched web client at web.whatsapp.com, but keep in mind that your formatting will only show up within the mobile WhatsApp application for the time being.

These features require WhatsApp 2.12.17 for iPhone or later.

The article mentions it however does not emphasize the fact this does not work on Android devices running WhatsApp- FYI.

Does it work with Android as well ?

When I tested this with a coworker who uses WhatsApp on Android, apparently it is iOS only, but it might have changed…
