Skype for iPhone updated with new Bots feature

By , Mar 30, 2016

Skype received an update on Wednesday, bringing the iPhone app to version 6.13. The change log in the App Store says the release just features “General Improvements,” but a quick look at the official Skype blog shows that’s not the case.

During today’s Build 2016 conference, Microsoft introduced a new feature called Skype Bots. The company describes these Bots as “a new way to bring expertise, products, services and entertainment into your daily messaging on Skype.”

Microsoft says Skype Bots will come to life through messaging today, and in the future will be available for audio and video. You can try it out yourself in the iPhone app, by navigating to the Contacts page, and selecting Add contact > Bots.

Skype for iPhone is available in the App Store for free.

Isn’t Bots a fancy new term for advertising? It states interacting with a movie, cartoon or book character, how long before that changes to include food, clothing and almost any product looking to advertise? I see facebook uses the term bots for airline advertising. Judging bu the high number of commenters here, seems this practice is/will be accepted or everyone’s on vacation. Sad really. Well done Cody for bring it to people’s attention. Looks like you need not have bothered.
