Amazon is currently offering a significant discount on its popular Prime service, cutting the one-year membership fee from $99 to $73. The promotion is in celebration of the company’s success at the Golden Globes earlier this week, and is good from  now through 11:59 p.m. Sunday night.

For those of you who aren’t particularly familiar with Amazon Prime, the service includes a number of benefits. There’s free 2-day shipping (and same-day in some areas) on millions of products, and free access to Prime Video, Prime Photos, Prime Music and the Kindle Lending Library.

You’ve probably heard of Prime Video. It’s Amazon’s Netflix-like streaming video service that allows users to watch a wide range of syndicated TV shows, movies, and original Amazon content like The Man in the High Castle. Similarly, Prime Music offers access to streaming radio and music.

Honestly, these two features alone, in conjunction with the free shipping, would be worth the annual cost. But you also get unlimited photo storage via Cloud Drive, and one free rental per month on any Kindle device from a library of over 800,000 books courtesy of Amazon’s Lending Library.

Amazon’s original series Mozart in the Jungle took home 2 awards at this year’s Golden Globes: Best Musical or Comedy Series and best actor in a Musical or Comedy Series for show star Gael García. That makes 4 total Golden Globe wins for Amazon, who also won two last year for Transparent.

Again, the $73 promotion is for new members only and is good from now through 11:59 p.m. Sunday night. You can take advantage of the deal here. Additionally, Amazon is offering free access to Mozart in the Jungle this weekend, which you can find here or via the official Amazon Video app.

It’s 49 dollars for students instead of 99. You get the 49 dollar price every year for up to four years.

B/c prime is free for students

49 dollars for a year for four years. I’m on my second year, and by the time that ends, I’m going to use my girls school email, too.

lol…very expensive …in germany the normal amazon prime for 1 year costs 49 euro

    • For real?! That’s kind of annoying to hear, as a 5 year Prime Member, but then again the United States are much bigger and have to have many more warehouse hubs. Plus I would assume that shipping companies here are way more expensive too.

For anyone on the fence about joining Prime, let me tell you that it easily is the best spent $100 I spend each year. You get access to basically Netflix & Spotify, newly added 20% off all new video game releases, free digital copies of all music you purchase, Amazon Underground (I believe that’s a Prime only feature) gives you tons of very popular Droid Apps & Games for free (that also normally have all the InApp Purchases all for free too), etc.

The Free 2 Day Shipping also pays for itself in a matter of months, if you buy online frequently, and they now offer Sunday shipping with that too. Not always a guarantee that it’ll show up on a Sunday, but when they do it will be at my door by 10am.

I sound like a rep for Amazon but I simply love Prime and all that it offers. You also can add a whole family “Household” now and also up to 4 friends or coworkers. My family and I split the costs 5 ways and at $20 each there is no other service out there that comes close to offering all that stuff.

The US version of Prime is so much better than the Canadian version. All we get is the 2 day shipping and unlimited photo cloud drive.
No Prime video, no Prime Music and no ebooks 😛
