samsung s2

During its big Galaxy Note 5/S6 Edge+ event last week, Samsung showed off a video teaser of its upcoming Apple Watch competitor, the Gear S2. For folks who missed the keynote, the clip is now available on the company’s Mobile YouTube channel.

We can glean quite a bit from the video. The Gear S2 will have a round watch face, similar to the Moto 360 and the LG G Watch R, with round icons and other UI elements to match. It also looks like it will feature heart rate and fitness tracking capabilities.

Additionally, it’s being reported that the Gear S2 will run on Samsung’s proprietary Tizen operating system, instead of Android Wear. If true, this would block users from accessing the plethora of apps and watch faces already available for Google’s wearable OS.

Little else is known about the Gear S2, other than that Samsung will reveal more at its IFA press event next month. The company has of course been making wearables for years now, but it’ll be interesting to see what its first post-Apple Watch offering looks like.

love how your reviews and articles are generally not too apple fanboy-esque. looks pretty neat to me, look forward to hearing more.

  • Newgunnerr

Wow it even has cute apple like app icons

  • Phil Randle

Some of the apps look like they are designed well, but the home-screen is hideous, those icons are really badly designed, I also don’t know what the app selection is going to be like either.

Apple is about to debut Watch OS 2, with native apps all working on the same size screen, so far Android Wear has watches with circular screen, square screen, different size screens so elements will need to be tailored to suit each watch. This is also running Tizen OS, so developers would need to see significant uptake before wanting to devote resource to develop for it.

Both apples and Samsung’s ui is shit

      • Slifur

And your profile pic looks like you’re constipated and dumping shit..

      • George

        Okay?

  • Jake Rogers

FYI, the selection UI is the bezel of the face, which rotates. Just another way they copied apple (watch crown).

    • A rotating face/bezel is better imo, to bad you wouldn’t be able to do that on a squared face. I like the square/rectangle face for a smart watch idea..

      • Slifur

Obviously samsung copied that to apple watch. And i agree, that is much better than apple watch crown.

Why didn’t Samsung just release the Apple Watch killer before Apple released their watch?

    • N&LH

Copy + paste then saying we are the first who brought this

They tried, they had no idea what the Apple Watch would look, so they released the gear and the other version. Now that Apple is setting the “rules” of the smartwatch market, they have to offer something similar (better design, a neat UI and apps), but they´re playing the role of the follower and not the leader, they´ve been doing that for years now. That´s why it seems they´re always copying Apple.

  • Sebastián Junca 

For a company who´s been making smartwatches for years I would expect something more than a great design (lets face it, the Gear S2 design is nice, even the rotating bezel is clever) and a neat UI. The Apple Watch has something that android wear and even Tizen don’t. It´s an entirely new way of using your wrist. Yes, I know smartwatches have been on the market for more than 5 years, but the success of Apple Watch (besides of being an Apple product, the luxury and all they sell) relies on its ecosystem, on having the opportunity to install new apps that try to rethink the way we interact with our phone and entourage. The Apple Watch encouraged developers to a whole new level. That´s why is going to be almost a year since the Apple Watch was first introduced, and we´re still discovering what it can really do.

Again, the problem with the S2 for me is that is a nice watch that´s going to lack the functionality the Apple Watch is trying to offer. I see it more like a moto 360 II competitor than an Apple Watch (Hope to be wrong, I would like to see more innovation and less fight for patents and copycats like before).

  • anustart

Why did you attach a video of the apple watch.

I’m only kidding of course. Fanboy posts are irritating.

  • you mean “Moto 360 competitor”

    • Rowan09

I agree. It should be an Android competitor first and Apple Watch competitor after since it’s running Tizen and not Android.

Just that first picture makes me iffy about that S2. I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t want to have to rotate my head or my wrist just to see the notifications. I personally get more longer notifications which is why a square smart watch would be better. Personally a poor decision in my opinion. The Moto 360 does a better job and it displays notification completely horizontally on its round display.

    • Benedict

I guess this is just the preview “status bar” notification. The real notification will pop up over the whole screen of course…

      • Shadowelite123

I don’t know. If they are going to do it like the Moto 360, why add a notification system like that in the first place? Like yea everyone’s different, but that’s an inconvenient form of displaying notifications.

  • iPhoneWINS

    all this watches are failing…

  • Gerardo Castro

Nice, rounded bezel for navigation, and it doesn’t have the flat tire UI seen on Android wear devices. I’d be interested in seeing more!

    • Benedict

Only the Moto 360 has the flat-tire syndrome. Not Android Wear devices in general.

      • Gerardo Castro

Actually, this is one of 3 smartwatches, including the LG smartwatch and the recently announced Fossil smartwatch.
