Seng app switcher

I know I’ve caught a lot of flack in the past for comparing other tweaks to Auxo. Some people think that I’m biased when it comes to Auxo and its creators, but as I’ve said in the past, I just like to call a spade a spade.

If you get offended by the mere mention of Auxo, then you may want to jump right into the article, and skip the next sentence.

Seng is a tweak that’s heavily inspired by Auxo. There I said it. There’s simply no denying that fact.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not a great tweak. Auxo 3 isn’t even updated for iOS 8.4, so your options are limited if you enjoy its functionality. Developer Charlie Hewitt saw this as an opportunity, and has stepped in to offer Seng—a tweak that pays homage to the Auxo series, but finds enough solid footing to stand on its own two feet. Watch our in-depth video walkthrough for all of the details.

How to try Seng

First and foremost, Seng is still in beta, so you’re not going to find it on the stock Cydia repos. That said, it’s still extremely easy to get a hold of, as there’s a free beta for the tweak available right now.

Simply add the following beta repo to your list of Cydia sources:

Once you do, download the Seng beta, and you’ll be good to go.

After installation, head over to the Settings app and find Seng’s preference panel. Seng’s preferences are composed of three main parts—Top View Sections, Bottom View Sections, and Other Options.

The basic premise of Seng is that it merges the App Switcher with Control Center. Therefore, you have everything that you need at your fingertips by simply invoking the App Switcher. Seng also makes use of gestures so that you can slide up from the bottom of the screen to invoke the App Switcher as well.

The Top and Bottom View Sections allow you to customize the Control Center elements around the App Switcher. The App Switcher cards stay in the middle of the screen, and you can place Control Center elements on bottom, on top, or have a mix of the two. The App Switcher will resize itself automatically depending on how sandwiched-in it is. You can even have redundant elements on top and on bottom if you wish to do so.

Some of the items in the Bottom View Sections and Top View Sections have their own individual customization. For example, with music transport controls, you can choose to only display the controls when music is playing.

Seng preferences

The great thing about Seng is that all of this can be customized on the fly with no resprings. It’s super-easy to play around with different setups in order to find the perfect one that works for you.

In addition, users will find Zephyr-inspired app dismiss functionality that can be customized via the Other Options section of Seng’s preferences. This makes it so that you can swipe up from the corner of the screen in order to dismiss an app, instead of invoking the App Switcher.

A worthy alternative?

What’s remarkable about Seng is that, even though it’s in beta, I’ve found it to be extremely solid and stable. Granted, it’s still a beta, so your mileage may vary, but I was nonetheless impressed.

Is it as polished as Auxo? Few tweaks are. But it’s a solid alternative to Auxo on iOS 8.4, and it’s free to try if you’re okay with using a beta.

What are your thoughts on Seng? Have you tried it?

  • This tweak reminds me of another popular tweak but I can’t remember its name. Ha!

    • Connecting Mac User 

Sebastian just pointed the obvious – Probably weird / hard to remember name but great tweak 😉

    • Lucus Bendzsa

      Nice one Seb.

Oh by the way today I started French class and we had to choose a new French name. I am now Sebastien!!!!!

      • Well nice to meet you, Sebastien 🙂

    • Gabriel Anaya

I think you may be thinking of vertex.

  • bln

great tweak! but landscape mode is not support yet 🙁

  • Dylann Pham

    Is this compatible with GridViewer?

    • Damian

Probably not useable due to GridSwitcher screen size it takes

    • iFlasher

It works, but not with all sizes.

  • Blake

Works but every time I slide down on an app card it sends my phone to safe mode.

    • CA

Don’t slide down on them, it just opens the app if you do

      • Blake

That is what I am wanting it to do. Even just tapping on the app opposed to sliding down to get the app to open, is only working about half the time. Other half sends it to safe mode. I thought maybe it was conflicting with Tage, so I removed Tage but it is still happening. But can’t complain, that’s why it’s a beta.

      • Blake

Once it’s out of beta i think it will be an excellent tweak.

      • Blake

Nope sure dont. No tweaks that alter control center toggles expect this one.

      • CA

Hmm not sure then, it works perfectly for me. Even though I personally don’t like it you could always try Alympus

      • Blake

I changed a couple of sages settings and moved a few things around and now it’s not respringing at all. Must be a certain setting that is causing problems. I changed several settings so im not sure which one was causing it but it’s working now.

      • Blake

        sengs settings, my bad.

      • CA

        Do you have CCLoader installed?

  • besrate hogsa

i tried this one it is okay
but i will stick with the stock apple switcher
IMO apple should get a credit for getting this one right

    • Lucus Bendzsa

Have you tried it in iOS 9. It is fabulous. I just wish Apple had a slide to kill all on the home screen. Then I would never use another task switcher tweak.

      • besrate hogsa

actually I have ios 9 beta 5 on my iphone 6 plus

I do like the task switcher in ios 9

I wish they add some kind button to kill all

but it is still in beta so fingers crossed

  • Manuel Molina

Good tweak. I’m not into the tasking tweaks, but this one is nice. Could you tell us when it’s out of beta, Jeff through post?

  • Anonymous

Ah, my jailbreak feels complete now.

  • MaRz Franco

such an amazing Tweak!!! Works as if it would have been called Auxo 4 😀

  • Blip dude

Auxo LE is doing just fine for iPhone 6 Plus, but is this compatible with iPad?? I’m only looking for alternatives for iPad.

  • Mr_Coldharbour

Just installed this tweak and I must say I’m liking it a great deal! Very reminiscent of Zephyr (Sebastien’s favourite tweak when it was useable, as well as mine). I especially like the quit from the hot corners and the zoom-out animations. Very very stable release for a beta! Also works with all the popular CC tweaks such as CCLoader, CCSettings, Flipswitch, and the like. Well done Charlie!

  • czbird

Finally! Come get my money! 🙂
P.S. Only of working on iPad as well…

  • Dale

looks good but my apps don’t size with the bottom & top take away and add. also reboots into safe mode when try to kill apps

  • Paul Edmund

Im liking this way better than Alympus.

  • johnsm

    sounds chinese

  • anustart

    Auxo, nothing special.

    Seng, nothing special.

  • Chris Tangler

i had beta 1 then jumped to beta 4 and i had massive amount of resprings…i have polus installed and i think a lot of others with polus are also having problems, as i’ve read on reddit

    • Zuhair Aslam

      Same here :/

  • brad

Made my 6 respring into safe mode like crazy. To the point it was totally unusable. Could be a conflict?! But sticking with Auxo Legacy until it’s out of beta. Looked beautiful from what I could see, though.

  • DestroyerOfGods

Tried it on my iPod touch 5th Gen.
Goes into safe mode every time I swipe up on the home screen card.

  • Syed

    Works perfect on iPhone 5.
    Uninstalling vHome

  • Eddie Hines

it already crashed springboard after 5 minutes

  • Imran Ar

Finally I am done waiting for Auxo and on top of that you have to pay for it every time there is an update. Seng is more customizable than Auxo.

  • M_Hawke

Why is Jeff pronouncing this as “sung?”

  • Tko

Although it was stated in the article that this is for 8.4, I guess I was still hoping it would be compatible for iOS 8.1.2+ . Just to clarify you need at least 8.3 or higher to install it. Hopefully the dev will make that adjustment before it comes out of beta…was looking forward to trying this out.

    • Blip dude

Just curious, why not just update to 8.4?? I stayed on 8.1.2 as long as I could but I personally have only one regret updating: New music app with unnecessary features. Other than that, happy to have jumped ship.

      • Mr_Coldharbour

I agree about the new music app and its unnecessarily features, like “Recently Added.” A complete waste of real-estate, just fluff and bloat, nothing else. I had to upgrade a month ago from 8.1 because not being able to view the new emojis was driving me up the wall. That and the fact that I needed a fresh install. Though I was on 8.3 just a week prior and jailbroken but I had to swap my device for a new one and the new device came with 8.4, so, that’s my story.

    • Mr_Coldharbour

Someone asked the dev the same question on Twitter and he replied by saying that he’ll make it iOS 8.0-minimum in order to install it.

  • Ángel Javier Esquivel

Buggy af… Oh, still in beta…

  • Arne Schaper

Works perfekt on 8.4, even with Polus and Springtomize installed. Couldn’t find any bug until now. More customizable than Auxo or Alympus.

  • Arne Schaper

I also use LockInfo and Activator…no problem at all in 24h. Just updated to Beta 6
