Sorry, this application cannot run under a Virtual Machine TaiG Jailbreak

In a previous post, I lamented about the fact that I received a dreaded virtual machine error when trying to run the TaiG jailbreak tool on VMware Fusion 7. The error went something like this: Sorry, this application cannot run under a Virtual Machine.

Not only is that totally ambiguous, but it really didn’t make much sense when you consider that the prior TaiG tool ran with no problems. After trying a few solutions I found via Google, I resigned myself to the fact that I would probably just have to settle and use the old tool instead..

Fortunately, however, one of our awesome readers has come though with a fix. Mohamed Elkady shared this interesting little trick to help bypass a frustrating error. In this post and video, I’ll walk you through the entire process step-by-step.

Step 1: Shut down your virtual machine completely

Step 2: Open the virtual machine folder in ~/Documents/Virtual Machines/

Step 3: Right-click on your virtual machine and select Show Package Contents

Step 4: Find the file with the .vmx file extension

Step 5: Right-click → Open With → TextEdit

Step 6: Scroll to the bottom of the file and write the following on a new line:
monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = "true"
Step 7: Save the file

Step 8: Launch your virtual machine

Step 9: Run the TaiG tool

That’s all there is to it. It literally takes no more than 5 minutes to complete this fix.

What do you think?

  • Lucus Bendzsa

I tired it and it works! Just so glad I have a Widnows computer along side my Mac though for times like these!

    • Dizzlerocksj’s

just glad to have a mac did the jailbreak on my macbook pro

      • I wish I had a Macbook Pro and these problems! Would sure beat the problems I constantly have on Win8.1

      • Dante

Hey what virtual machine did you use and how did you get itunes to run on your virtual machine using a MacBook? I’ve been trying for a week and havent gotten past downloading itunes and installing it.

  • Hi

Jeff, from where can I download the Taig 2.1.1.0 tool, cuz I cant find it at your download page.

    • Jack McKinnon

Do the deb file. I tried Jailbeaking with the new tool and it failed.

      • Hi

        Ok wil do that

  • Kyaw Swar Aung

    Thanks Mohamed Elkady

  • sup

    plz parallels fix

  • Lucas Rey

    Works perfect, thank you.
However, take care of the double quote in: “TRUE”.
It’s better to write yourself instead of copy/paste, otherwise you’ll get the following error:

    • David Casarrubias Gutiérrez

I wrote myself and this error continues ):

      • Lucas Rey

That’s because of “”… Just open the .vmx file in “notepad”. Then you can copy the following string:
        monitor_control.restrict_backdoor =
but write yourself the rest: “TRUE”

  • tunutsaigon

I ran VirtualBox with Windows 7 on my Mac without issue! 😉

    • Roxie Contyn

How? I’m running it with Windows XP on an older Mac.

  • Teshko Koyi

For Windows Users add this Line:
    monitor_control.restrict_backdoor=”true”

    • Antzboogie

It says apple driver hasnt been found anyone can help? Thanks

    • Dig

I use Windows, what application are you using for this? Please bear with me

  • Jesus

mine already had it when i checked it out any suggestions? Thanks for all these updates Jeff!

    • CS

Your quotation marks are bad. Copy-Paste the line above it and alter.

  • Rafael Castillo

I tried this and it’s telling me VMware is corrupt.

    • Yeein Chung

The value of the line is “TRUE” not “true”.Replace the value with “TRUE” and the problem should be solved.

      • Preben Faarkrog Hansen

        Not for me ?

  • Yeein Chung

The value of the line is “TRUE” not “true”,otherwise, you will still suffer the problem

    • carolina arceo

      I get dictionary problem

      • alberto

it happened the same to me; the language in my mac was Italian, i tried to change it in english and then it worked! you should change your language in system preferences

  • David Saltares

Is there a fix for this issue if you have windows on a serparate partition using boot camp?

    • Boot Camp isn’t a virtual machine so this issue should never even appear (assuming the error message means what it appears to be implying).

      • Marcunio

Same problem here, i only have the bootcamp partition opened through vmware, so no virtual machine files… and i get the error…i just rebooted windows to jailbreak, but it would be nice to find a workaround…so next time i don’t need to interrupt my workflow to reboot 🙁

      • Marcunio

        i found the location of the vmx file, in my case: /Users/USERNAME/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines/Boot Camp/Boot Camp.vmwarevm
        Now it works!

  • Roxie Contyn

How would I do this with VirtualBox?

  • N0DlSC

I’m not running a virtual machine (native W8.1) and get that error too. Any idea?

  • Mitch23345

I’m not even able to download 2.1.1 It give me a 504 error…what am I doing wrong?

  • iM0ises

How to fix this in Parallels ?

  • Dylan Lord

After trying for longest time, I got the “”true””, using “false” error, and so I went back into it and copied command and pasted and I’m getting dictionary problem now. I don’t know what exactly to do.

  • Qimmy

Anyone know how to fix for paralell?

  • Preben Faarkrog Hansen

HATE this !!!! getting the same F******* error after typing the line, an hour past with notting but frustration ,,, bring the mac version

    • Preben Faarkrog Hansen

      Why?

      • Preben Faarkrog Hansen

        AAAGh

    • Preben Faarkrog Hansen

      monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = “true”

      monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = “TRUE”

did these 2 options, none works ? HELP need my friday jailbreak

      • alber++

        Delete the ” ” : monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = true

  • What I wish is that someone (ANYONE) would help me fix is the nonstop error of iCloud asking for my password. It seriously is the only reason I am even updating and re-jailbreaking.

I have searched everywhere on the net and can’t find one concrete answer besides, “Restore your iPhone”. The worst place in the world to get support for your iPhone has got to be the Apple Support forum. They really need to take a lesson from Microsoft on how to run a support forum and how to properly answer issues. I can’t think of 1 Apple Support page I have ever viewed for help that has had a moderator respond with a definitive solution. To me this is where Apple is the downright worst.

Anyway, time to restore/jailbreak/reinstall everything because the dreaded iCloud password bug has reappeared…

    • Daniel

if you have “iap” stuff installed then delete it .. then you can remove the iCloud account.. then reload it .. i had the same problem. hope it helps

  • Michael

hate this, does not work installed vmware for all users, are there more vmx files?

  • Arktik

What do i do when i get this error NOT inside a virtual machine environment?!

  • Michael

    Here is the fix!

    if monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = = “TRUE”
    not works use also this
    disable_acceleration = “TRUE”

It depends on the graphics card if the monitor control fix the working or not, on my imac mid 2007 with ati128 it was not solving the Sorry, this application cannot run under a Virtual Machine error.
So i have to use also disable_acceleration = “TRUE”

after this your virtual windows is exreeeemmly slowly, but there is a solution!

User this settings only for starting thaig, after the jailbreak app is running, pause VMWare, don’t shutdown, only pause and edit the .vmx file back to normal. This means delete monitor_control.restrict_backdoor and disable_acceleration, and start VMware and press play, you will see, thais is running, and windows will run fast. And the jailbreaks works fine.

    • Preben Faarkrog Hansen

      No luck here….

    Somebody Help!!!

  • Triple-z

    stuck on 60% injecting…

    • Coy Green

Stuck at 60% as well. Mine managed to get passed the injecting and restart though.

    • Coy Green

If you’re using a virtual machine, which I assume you are based on this tutorial, try restarting Windows in your VM. I did that and restarted the jailbreak and it pushed through the 60% and finished.

  • Cecilia

I guess the only ‘fix’ for parallels users is to jailbreak using taig v2.0 and update it in cydia…

  • Montel G

    what about for parallels?

  • Preben Faarkrog Hansen

stuck at 20, 42, and total stuck at 82%, dammit, restoring again

  • Preben Faarkrog Hansen

Hate this !!!!!!!!! come on with the mac version

    • mrl09

copy “TRUE” from one of the lines in the file and past it. seems like mac text edit isn’t doing “” correctly even when you type. This fixed my issue

  • Gavin Williams

I’m getting the virtual machine error when using a windows based laptop!! This is so frustrating does anyone know how i can get around this?

    • Dig

I’m still waiting for an answer….it’s like no one care for Windows haha.

  • Chandler Haefner

its telling me I cant run this under a virtual machine and im not even using a virtual machine

  • Alejandro

Okay so make sure you use monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = “TRUE”
but for “TRUE” copy and paste it from one of the lines within the command. After that, turn off the wifi and put the iPhone in airplane mode. Also run TaiG as administrator, this worked for me.

  • Alistair J. Ross

sorry it made no difference for me

  • Kelsie Kartchner Mendenhall

error says can’t find my apple device… Please help

    • Coy Green

Make sure the iTunes in your Windows Virtual Machine is syncing with your device, and not the iTunes in your Mac. Mine would give me an option to connect to Mac or connect to Windows.

Just unplug usb and plug it in and see if that option comes up for you.

  • E C

argh!!!!! now what have i done?
