Giffage 2

As many of you know, I’ve been quite bummed by the third-party keyboards on iOS 8. Many of them are underwhelming, and not all of the blame rests with developers. Apple’s implementation has left lot to be desired, but many of the third-party keyboard developers have done themselves no favors.

Needless to say, there hasn’t been one keyboard that I use on my iPhone outside of the stock English keyboard, and the Emoji keyboard, but that recently changed. Giffage (free) is a brand new third-party release that brings a GIF keyboard to iOS 8.

I understand that Giffage isn’t the first third-party keyboard to do GIFs, as I’ve used some of the alternatives. What I can say is that Giffage is one of the best designed and easiest-to-use third party keyboards that I’ve yet to try. The implementation is well thought out, and goes beyond the call of duty when it comes to sweating the little details.

When you download Giffage, you’ll need to go through the normal spiel of going to Settings → General → Keyboard and enabling the keyboard along with allowing full access. Once you do, you’ll see the fully functioning Giffage keyboard appear when you press the language button on the iPhone’s keyboard.

You’ll also find an app icon for Giffage on the Home screen. The Giffage app is where you can go to search for GIFs, see trending GIFs and more.

The app features four sections in all, and they are as follows:

  • Search – find a specific GIF
  • Random – randomly selected GIFs
  • Trending – top GIFs of the moment
  • Hearted – your saved favorites

GIffage 3

To navigate between sections use a swipe down or a swipe up gesture and release over the section that you want to view. Switching sections is extremely intuitive and features great animations.

Giffage is powered by Giphy, so that means you’ll have tons of GIF animations at your disposal. With that said, having all of those GIF animations displayed at once is a bit taxing on the iPhone, and can make your device run a little warm. Just something to keep in mind.

If you’re looking for what I consider to be the best designed third party keyboard available, then you should definitely take Giffage for a spin. It’s a free download on the App Store, and it features a nearly endless amount of GIF animations thanks to its tie-in to Giphy’s API.

What do you think about Giffage? How do you think it stacks up with other third-party keyboard offerings?

Just curious, what’s your favorite third-party keyboard for functionality? (actual typing)
    Anyone can answer, really.
    I personally like Nintype.

    • M_thoroughbred

That’s the same for me. The problem I’m having with third party keyboards is the way they sometimes behave in iOS 8. The constant freezing or disappearing it’s frustrating. And that’s with any of them. Apple needs to address this issue cause it’s got to be the OS. This was one of the features I was looking forward to when iOS 8 was announced. Now I just have a bad taste in my mouth. All these iOS 8 updates and Apple still hasn’t addressed the issue.

      • Out5poken

Yeah I gave up using third party keyboards because of the same problems.

iOS 8.3 solves almost all, if not all of the bugs with 3rd party keyboards.

      • Kr00

Have to agree. 3rd party keyboards are much more fluid since the last update.

      • M_thoroughbred

This was taken after updating to iOS 8.3 fresh install. I don’t see a fix yet.

Swype! No full access rights needed and smooth swiping (and normal typing if needed). I only don’t like the extra Swype button it shows in the keyboard. I would rather have a more original keyboard look (but with swiping feature ofcourse).

      • Jonathan

Nintype doesn’t require full access, and you can have nothing on the keyboard. 🙂 #justsaying

  • Out5poken

Is it compatible with whatsapp? or rather will it display the gif in the thread or will it just apply a hot link

    • Rock Lee

Unfortunately WhatsApp doesn’t support .gif files. So you can’t send these. Perhaps some day the WhatsApp devs will take their heads out of their asses and start adding features instead of ‘working’ on an app that hasn’t changed since 2009.

      • WhatsApp is owned by Facebook now so I personally can’t see them doing this anytime soon. If anything they’ll surely destroy it or force integration with Facebook somehow…

I use Swype for all my typing. It’s just so much faster than normal peck typing. Swype had a very nice stability update awhile back, and I’ve noticed that 8.3 improves third party keyboard Substantially. So my keyboard is as snappy as the stock one. I just wish I could use it for quick reply on lock screen.

  • should be pronounced giff _ahgz ?

    • Andrew

You mean like with the end sound of *Raj* or *Taj* Mahal?

    • SoylentGreen

As in Tuneage, not actual word but indicative of many tunes,
E.g My phone is packed with tune-age.
So app indicates much gif access, e.g. Plenty Gifage ☺

  • Paul

Sentry was a part of this!

  • Eikast

Jeff, believe it or not but iOS 8.3 has improved third party keyboards, at least Swiftkey for me. I figured since I was getting the Apple Watch (and was experiencing horrible BT issues with my Jaybird X and Pebble) I decided to update to iOS 8.3 Every single problem that I had was fixed and Swiftkey almost runs as fast as it does on Android. Since installing iOS 8.3, I only had one time in which the keyboard failed to show up (I had iOS 8.3 installed on day one).

    • So they’ve still yet to fix the problem. No thank you.

      • Eikast

        As I said, one time.

      • A fix is a fix. If it’s still happening then it is not fixed. No thanks!

      • Eikast

Lol. Are you the kind of person that stops using an app if it crashes once? Prior to iOS 8.3 I would have problems with SwiftKey on a daily basis. One time doesn’t mean that there’s really a problem.

      • A one time crash doesn’t indicate an ongoing problem so your answer the is no. People are still reporting issues with the keyboard in iOS 8.3. It has not been fixed.

Nintype too many poppy up things, others apart from Swype take up to a second to even notice your not pecking, to me that’s kinda defeating the point, once you master the joined up writing aspect of swiping, don’t concentrate, it really is the business, But, always a but, only Swype actually works lag free and has no limitation, that I’ve noticed, if it don’t get full access, others withhold features etc unless full spy mode enabled
