Periscope, Beast Towers, Whipclip and more apps to check out this weekend

Apps of the week

There just isn’t enough time in the day to play all the games and use all the apps that flow through the App Store like a river of chocolate. How is one person supposed to find the cream of the crop on his or her own?

Instead of trying to check out every single title that comes along, you should check out our list of apps and games that we think you would find useful and fun. We weed through the mound of junk to find the highlights for you.

Periscope

Periscope

Not to be outshined by some indie startup, Twitter recently bought out a company and launched its own live-stream video app to compete directly with Meerkat. Unlike Meerkat, this app includes a replay option. So, if your Twitter followers missed your live broadcast, you can keep it online for up to 24 hours. You can also keep your feed private and only broadcast to specific people. It includes that feature it took away from Meerkat, the ability to find other users based on your Twitter network. I hate to admit it, but it is also better looking. This app is available for free.

Beast Towers

Beast Towers

Protect your land from a creepy invasion in this fantasy tower defense game. For a change of pace, you control the beasts trying to stop those pesky humans from taking everything away from you. Drop barrels to divert the attack into your danger zone. Unleash all manner of beastly “towers” that scratch, bite, and spit fire at wave after wave of encroaching enemy forces. You will earn coins for killing. Use the money to upgrade your towers so they hit faster and harder. Your towers will also evolve over time as they gain experience in battle. Recruit new beasts to your cause by taking them down in the field. This game is available for $0.99.

Filters for iPhone

Filters for iPhone

You can never have too many options when editing your digital photos. At least, that is what this app will make you believe. With 800 filters, textures, and enhancements, you will never have the same look twice, unless you want to. With this photo-editing app, you can zoom in to get a closer look at your pictures. You can quickly switch between the edited image and its original look. Intensify filter effects, add color gel overlays, and adjust the picture’s exposure, saturation, and contrast with specially designed premade tweaks. This app is available for $0.99.

Caliber

Caliber

Chatting with your friends on Facebook Messenger may be great for keeping your social life active, but balancing work and play are important. Building relationships with business associates can be just as helpful to your life as planning a get together with friends. This app connects you to your LinkedIn contacts so you can socialize, get to know people better, and find out a little bit more about the CEO you met at the company picnic last week. This app syncs only with people that you have labeled as business contacts on LinkedIn, so you can keep your professional life separate. You can also look up member profiles to help remind you of where you met someone when striking up a business conversation. This app is available for free.

Jump’N’Shoot Attack

JumpnShoot Attack

In this side-scrolling retro auto run platformer, your job is to jump and shoot. It requires serious skills in timing. Most of the platforms are barely wide enough to stand on and the ones that are wider are filled with spikey mines and killer bugs. If you actually manage to make it far enough, you’ll be able to fly across the landscape using a jetpack. Unfortunately, the sky is filed with more spikey mines and flying killer bugs. Collect items that will give you more firepower so you can wipe out the bad guy before you get too close. This game is available for $1.99.

Whipclip

Whipclip

Sometimes, the best part of a movie or television show is only about 10 seconds long. YouTube is great for looking up those moments, but what if you just want to spend some time watching random clips that someone thought would be funny. This app is filled with just that. Clips are a few seconds long and feature some interesting, funny, or amazing moment captured in time. From music videos to television shows, you can find bites of awesome at every turn. You can also create your own clips from a wide list of content to share with others. This app is available for free.
