ios 8-3 keyboard

It appears Apple plans to fix a long-standing keyboard issue which caused users to inadvertently tap the period key when aiming for the space bar in Safari. As noted by MacRumors, beta versions of iOS 8.3 feature a design change that should resolve the problem.

In 8.3, Apple has made the space bar longer on the keyboard that pops up when inputting text in Safari’s omnibar, and the ‘Go’ button shorter. This should make it less likely for users to encounter accidental period key presses when typing out their web searches.

The issue has been bothering users since 2013, when Apple launched iOS 7 and a radically new version of mobile Safari. While it may seem like a minor annoyance, it has spawned several complaint threads on various forums—particularly from iPhone 6 Plus users.

Apple yesterday released iOS 8.3 beta 3, which brought about the new Apple Watch app, and some improvements to Messages. We don’t know if this change will make it into the public release of iOS 8.3, and even if it does, we don’t know when it will be available.

Almost worth losing jailbreak just for that..

    • Gregg

      Um, nnnno. But well said!!!

    • diggitydang

I would’ve said “Almost worth someone creating a tweak for this!”.

      Personally, I haven’t had this issue though…

    • Manuel Molina

There’s a tweak on Cydia to take the period out, move it or take it out all together. Not worth losing a jailbreak over. It’s called Go.Away.Period.Button.

      It’s spelled this way

      • ShawnTXDFW

Can’t seem to find it in Cydia. Is it under the repos already added or do I have to add one?

    • I was thinking the same thing! lol It drives me insane how much I hit the period button but it still isn’t worth losing all my wonderful jailbreak tweaks for it.

    • GeorgeTVP

There’s a jailbreak for this. It’s called ‘Go.Away.Period’ and it’s in the reddit communitly repo.

  • Tyler

    I have this in 8.2?

  • There is a god after all!

  • DOOManiac

Meanwhile, the backwards Shift key remains…

    • Chang in Charge

That plus the third party keyboard problems, and the missing lower case letters. There is definitely more to be tweaked with the keyboard.

    • CryptoCoin420

      I hate that!

  • Tony Trenkle Jr.

I thought this was saying it fixed the 3rd party keyboard issues…

  • Anonomous.TECH.man

    “Its about fu*ckin time”

Here I was thinking that they’ve finally improved third party keyboard support…
Instead just making a big deal about a stupidly minor annoyance fix…

  • GzyOnline

    thank goodness!

  • Gary32283

That’s one fix. Next the shift key, then move email attachments to the top of the email.

    • Naqib Ehsan

      Such a basic idea. Jesus

Man I thought iDB was talking about 3th party keyboard lag fix

  • Joonyaboy

  • therealjjohnson

Never had an issue with this.

    • BoardDWorld

I was about to say the same, I had been using iPhone for 7 years and never had this issue. Now the backspace key, that was another story.

  • Andrew

    THANK YOU

I always thought it was just my fat fingers! Awesome news.

  • nickelnickel

Finally. This bothers the hell out of me. So happy.

  • faceless

OK, cool! what about this problem?

  • Byambaa

Apple happen to be the best IT company in the world. I dont know which one cares more for its product, Google or Apple. Google adds features very frequently and pushes it without one word mostly, and the changes are are always good and big. Tim Cook and co., who designs its products at the finest level, repositioning one button after 2 years and thinks the satisfies their loyal customers best. Btw, i own iPad air and nexus, love both.

  • Andrieux Querido

Finally, its really annoying, sometimes i type a long text and only then i realise that it has lots of periods instead of space.
