Photos Mac iPhone iPad teaser 001

The first beta of the forthcoming OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 software update which contains the long-expected Photos for Mac application, is now available via the AppleSeed Public Beta service.

Participants in the OS X Public Beta program can download the software update right now via the Updates tab of the Mac App Store. The public beta carries a build number of 14D87, the same like the second 10.10.3 beta that the company seeded to its registered Mac developers a week ago.

As mentioned before, OS X 10.10.3 beta includes Photos for Mac with support for iCloud Photo Library, in addition to two-step verification for Google Accounts in System Preferences, more diverse emoji and other enhancements.

Though no specific bugs are mentioned in release notes accompanying the download, Apple says the update will improve the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac.

The software should release for public consumption in mid-March.

As noted by Twitter user DJ Jenkins, the download is available through the Updates tab in the Mac App Store, provided you have signed up for the AppleSeed OS X Beta software testing program here.

Next, click on the “Download Beta Access Utility” button under the Enroll Your Mac link. This will download the YosemiteBetaAccessUtility.dmg to your computer.

Open the disk image, then double-click the package to run the installer and enroll your Mac for Beta Software updates.

You can later change whether you would like to receive software updates for these public builds in your Mac’s System Preferences > App Store.

Does anyone know how stable this beta is?

    • Newgunnerr

Came to the comments to ask this question. Some feedback would be great. I want to install the beta but I’m afraid it has some game-breaking bugs. I’d love to hear from someone who is/has been using it.

      • Utrarunner5

I’m sure its stable. its not an huge release like yosemite was. its only 10.10.3. The only thing that might not be completely stable would be the new Photos app. I’m downloading it now though and will let you know.

      • James G

I’ve been running both seeds of 10.10.3. It’s stable. Photos, however, tends to be buggy and crashes sometimes. Especially with a large, 20k+ image library like mine.

      • vivalaivsca

I’ve been using the betas for a month now. I have no issues at all. The only bug I have seen is in the photos app. Where if your iphone or a camera is plugged in, opening the app will launch with the import dialog and this causes the app to crash. But if you disconnect your iphone everything runs like butter.

      • Robert Wacker

I have been running it since the first seed of 10.10.3 beta, and have not seen any issues. The new photos app is great. Hopefully they will add in more features over time, but what is here works well. Like James and Viva said most bugs are with photos app. Its so stable my wife is willing to have it on her computer.

      • James G

I experienced that in Beta 1 but Beta 2 fixed that import bug for me. I do have iCloud Photo Library enabled on both the Macbook Pro and the iPhone 6 (iOS 8.0.2 jailbroken).

But other than that, completely stable. All my apps work just fine (including Adobe apps, all other Apple apps (Final Cut, iMovie, iTunes, Safari, etc.).

It’s a .3 release as opposed to a .0 so it’s a pretty safe bet for testing. But if you’re not interested in migrating your photo library to iCloud Photo Library yet, don’t bother. That’s the main reason I upgraded.

    • Shawn

Quite stable. Used both builds on my daily computer.

    • Chang in Charge

Installing now! I hope this is stable!

    • Chang in Charge

Crashing every time I open up the photos app. It only stays open for a few minutes. I have iCloud Photo Library enabled with about 4,000 photos backed up to it. While these photos are loading it crashes.

  • Does anyone know how to change the location of the Photos Library?

    • James G

      Just move the file.

  • Quang

I installed the developer beta a week ago, I don’t know why, but when I click the Finders icon, the Finders window won’t open anymore. I must right click and choose New Finder Window. Anyone knows if it’s a bug or not? and how to fix it?

    • Hot12345

      Reinstal OS.

      • Harle

Same problem here! I have reinstalled it two times, always the same problem! 🙁 Anyone a solution??

    • Same problem here! Already filed the bug via Feedback Assistant.

    • Tinh Nguyen

Me too, same issue, just report to Apple

    • Wessel Erasmus

      Go to ~/Library/Preferences

Search for “Finder” in “Preferences” and delete those .plist

      Restart your Mac

    • Webbygem

      same problem with me.

  • justme

    still waiting for 8.2 :/

  • Yujin

Just received my invite. Looking forward to playing with the new photos app. I already uploaded like 30k pictures to my iCloud so hopefully everything stay as smooth as it has been so far.

  • Darren

Loving the new Photos app, with the exception of one problem. The feature I use the most appears to be broken. Shared Photo Streams do not work at all. It’ll say it’s loading the latest photos or whatever and then it just stops and gives me a “Start Sharing” button, as if I have no Shared Photo Streams, when in fact I have numerous streams. Trying to create a new one doesn’t even work from the Mac app. Everything still works between my iOS devices though, so it looks like a bug with the Mac app.

  • Stephaughn Alston

Does anybody know if 10.10.3 fixes the file vault bug?

    • Macmaniman

      what bug?

      • Stephaughn Alston

I can confirm that it has been fixed. It was a bug that was causing file vault not finish encrypting your files. It would say ‘paused’ or ‘plug in because you don’t have enough power’ but my laptop would be on 90 or more %.

      • Macmaniman

I’m having a bug on 10.10.3 now, not fire vault, but at first i couldn’t sign out of iCloud, and now I’m having problems with photos app and photo streams. really annoys me

      • Stephaughn Alston

Well it is beta, give it some time!

      • Macmaniman

i know, but i don’t like to wait so after 9 reinstalls it seems to be working

  • Jose Gonzalez

Trying to load my iPhoto Library over to Photos but it tells me it is not allowed to. Anyone have this issue? By the way, it doesn’t let me manually choose to import my iPhoto Library.

    Please help. Thanks!

    • David Schertz

      Same here. Solutions anyone?

  • Andrew

Got the email today, but it was all in French… :p

Not everyone in Canada can read French fluently! Luckily I’m pretty good, but still…

    • slicerx

Sheesh, and if it came in English, most of those that only speak French would have said: “NOT everyone in Canda can read English Fluently!”. BECAUSE THEY CAN”T.

  • AverageSouthNigga

Any of yall know if classic iPods sync wit the iTunes version in this beta cuz 12.0.1 stopped my classic from syncing

  • Mark Kramer

I see no need to update to 10.10. I like 10.9.5 just fine….

    • RedGeminiPA

Then why are you even reading this post, let alone commenting on it?

  • lemonhead

The download is extremly slow in the Appstore for me, is there any other way to upgrade? maybe a direct link to the seed?

  • Paul Cudmore

just downloaded ox 10.3.3 the application updater says I have downloaded it but my system still says 10.10.2 and I can find no trace of a mounted drive or installer for 10.3.3 any ideas ?

    • RedGeminiPA

Maybe because you need 10.10.3 and not 10.3.3?

  • CC

I’d like to install the beta to test Photos OSX. I have a spare machine I plan to use it on. If I use my Apple ID can I install it ONLY on the one machine or will my other machines try to update to it as well?

    • RedGeminiPA

      It’s per machine.
