apple car concept

Apple has several hundred employees secretly working on creating an electric vehicle, reported the Wall Street Journal on Friday, citing people familiar with the company’s plans. Code-named Titan, the project currently sports the design of a minivan.

According to the Journal, Apple CEO Tim Cook approved the project about a year ago, putting product design Vice President Steve Zadesky in charge. A former Ford engineer, Zadesky has been a long time Apple employee who helped create the iPod and later the iPhone.

Zadesky is said to have created a team strong of 1,000 people, which tends to prove that Apple is serious about the project, rather than considering this electric car a hobby.

But of course, until we get an official confirmation from Apple, project Titan remains just this: a project that may or may not see the light of day. Besides, the technology developed for the project could very well be used for other products (think batteries, a technology in real need of a breakthrough). Either way, if Apple decided to go ahead with Project Titan, it would probably take years for an actual car to go into production.

This report comes a few hours after the Financial Times published a similar story earlier today, claiming that Apple had hired former President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Research & Development Johann Jungwirth, a report that has now been corroborated by the Wall Street Journal.

The rumors of Apple working on a car project started last week when mysterious vans equipped with cameras spotted around the country had Apple’s name attached to them. Two days later, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in an interview Apple was trying really hard to hire employees away from his company. It’s now easier to connect the dots.

Note the image above is a concept and doesn’t reflect Apple’s design, if the company is indeed working on such a project.

Their research will at least hold a lot of patents.

    • SoylentGreen

That statement is confusing, unless are you a patent lawyer for Apple. Do you mean that because of the multiple patents, some stuff will only be present on anything apple make?
That will just be emulated though. Like i said i cant see why you and 8 up voters thought it remarkable?

      • YTKN2ME

  • Steven Pedraza

This could very well be them trying to create a street view for their maps app. It’s how Google does there street view; vehicles with cameras attached.

    • Tommy Gumbs

But a logical answer like that won’t generate as many page views.

    • SoylentGreen

Completely different equipment, its like comparing apples and oranges, they just aint the same.

      • George

No it’s like comparing dog shit with dog shit

      • SoylentGreen

actually you do have a point their, i came to post this answer with hostility in mind but it it is like you say, they are all sh*t, but have subtle differences. Some are dry, flat and relatively harmless and others are giant piles of seathing wet, stinking fecal rottenness 😉

  • Fanboy 

As long as Jony Ive makes a video about it saying “aluminium” then i’m buying it

    • Tommy Gumbs

It will be of a seamless unibody design.

      • Ashish Maheshwari

        Just like Tesla :p

    • LuisFRocha

My co-workers and I had a discussion on how funny it is that (supposedly) Apple always advertises “aluminium” in their videos. After a few seconds of research, however, it turns out that ALL of America is wrong. It’s really called aluminium, not “aluminum”. The guy who discovered it (Sir Humphry Davy) at first called it “alumium”, then changed it to “aluminum”, but finally settled on “aluminium” after his colleagues convinced him to so it would match the other elements he himself had named (potassium, magnesium, sodium). Aluminium is the official and standard name. 🙂

  • An Apple electric car…hopefully that doesn’t mean we’ll now be seeing wall huggers parked on the streets.

    • 9to5Slavery

      lol samsung jokes.

      • @dongiuj

        lol no humour

    • Kurt

Apple iCar, on a full charge we can get you there, but not back.

  • justme

the Titan and Titan[S] models will come in
120Km, 360km, 640km and 1280km battery duration. also you can jailbreak it to get some extra features.

    • Bugs Bunnay

if the car can’t be jailbroken then I ain’t buying it.

      • SoylentGreen

        “Keep taking the shots”
        “Keep drinking the kool-aide”
        & “smoking your own dope”
Spring to mind reading your comment.

    • af0erster31

haha!! That´s the best comment in ages :*

  • GuyWithTheThings

Then Samsung will come out with a car.

It will be called ‘Titus’. (Not Titan)

It will sport a resistant polyurethane unibody with polished, chamfered metal trim. It will be powered by a V12 Engine and a 56,000 mAh battery with the same 300 miles per charge and 300 horsepower as the Titan’s V6 engine with a 30,000 mAh battery and 230 horsepower. It will also come with a watch that you can use to pump up your tires. (Something that sounds cool and can be used to argue against Apple fans, but also something that is a complete gimmick. Like most software features in Touchwiz.)

    • justme

if this will come with eye tracking, I sold!
      😀 jaja

    • @dongiuj

But when apple release a watch?….hmm

      • GuyWithTheThings

When Apple releases a watch you’ll be able to pump up your tires too. Both useless gimmicks. ;D

    • Benedict

Samsung has already cars. e.g. Samsung EMX or Samsung SM7

  • Matt

Cool, but still couldn’t care less for electric cars. Gas prices are lower then ever which means we all ought to go buy huge Range Rovers and Escalades … Until the gas prices jump up again

    • SoylentGreen

they are a complete illusion, it cost more in carbon terms, to generate the electrici

      • Kurt

Global warming is a myth too. But Al Gore needs yours money via carbon tax! Just another way to control people.

      • SoylentGreen

Yeah mate im well aware of the global warming myth, and how they are using it to channel fossil fuel industries overseas & usher in over 20 new carbon taxes.
Have you heard ‘Big Al’ saying how he invented the internet and ‘gave’ it to the world. Its so crooked it never ceases to amaze methat ‘apparently’ intelligent ppl start calling you a tinfoilhat wearer when you speak truths that take 30
Secs with google to independently confirm, maybe its best the moral majority are naïve it would blow their minds. The truth that is.

      • Kurt

With the name SoylentGreen I figured you were well aware of the myth. It’s sad people believe Chemtrails are just persistent contrails. Having lived almost a decade in a country that doesn’t have chemtrails, I never saw them. Again, never saw them. I moved to America a few months ago and I see them pretty much every day. It’s sick how easily people are manipulated and brainwashed. So much brainwashing going on in every movie TV show. Ever seen a movie or TV show that a Christian isn’t weird or dumb?

  • Ariel

    How about this?

    • Ariel

      Or this

    • urrl

  • Matt Sam

But the question is does it have Windows?

    • Gregg

Too funny!!! This would be a treasure trove for jokesters!

    • SoylentGreen

lol, only on the ‘w’ range, who needs to see where their going? Especially if Apple are at the wheel!!!!!!

  • MacGuru96

I’m excited, but I’m secretly hoping this doesn’t come to fruition for at least a few years, because I really want the BMW i3. ;D

    • 9to5Slavery

      • MacGuru96

That’d work too, lol. I’m just being realistic. ;D

  • @dongiuj

Looks almost identical to the electric powered Mitsubishi from quite a few years ago.

  • SoylentGreen

Don’t know about anyone else, but when these cars with extra gear(the mapping vans have a camera that comes out the top of the vans/cars like a periscope and they are spherical and act like they are on a gyroscope, thats it.) were spotted I though it was obvious they were getting “routes” for autonomous vehicles, which incidentally are a Wet dream for the nsa. do you see how they are manipulating this so called ‘war on terror’ to usher in all kinds of things with nefarious purposes, the DA in baltimore dropped a case against a guy charged with robbery rather than reveal how they tracked the defendant, and its opened the door for 100’s if not 1000’s of convicted robbers to appeal in the grounds they were tracked in the same way, the methodology remains undisclosed to the defense attorneys (the prosecution gather most evidence in any case and the onus is on them to be fair and give full disclosure to the otherside) they were tracked by ‘Stingray’ devices, they emulate a cellphone tower fooling phones in yhe area to connect, allowing the signal to pass through the ‘stingray’ to a legit tower whilsts allowing access to all info on the device. but heres the rub, it dies not distinguish between a suspect and joe patriot citizen and hoovers up data to the point where its very invasive
media posess the purchase/delivery orders for the device hence the knowledge of its existence in baltimore. Paired with autonomous vehicles, crony capitalism controlled & all for your “GOOD”, to make your life better, easier, tech that was only allowed by ‘we the people’ because it was for a ‘war on terror’ when its beimg used fir a war against American citizens.
stop the rot, there is a war on for your opinions, your preferences, your mind.
Its an information war. Atleast be aware it’s happening now and just by being aware that it is ongoing will atleast allow you to be informed enough to keep your family ok.

  • GuyWithTheThings

Someone is in this car using the integrated Apple Maps. He drives into a parking lot. Or perhaps a building. Or a lake.

  • Aaron Hysell

It’s ugly! Why can’t futuristic cars be good looking machines? For Apple, it should look better than that!

  • SoylentGreen

1 gyroscope style ball is on mapping cars, these ‘route makers’ are dripping in visible tech.

  • kent ak

Great! Now I will have to buy a new apple car every year 🙁

  • iAskTank

I can’t image how sick it’ll look to look at your rearview mirror and stare at an Apple logo behind you. Man I will be one of the idiots running to get this car the day it comes out! Hopefully something actually surfaces.

  • Dave

Amusing that the picture is that of the Tata Pixel concept car based out of India. I personally think that it is a good looking car.
