AmEx Apple Pay ad teaser 001

Last evening, American Express began airing its inaugural television commercial for Apple Pay.

Conceived as the evolution of AmEx, the commercial, called “Retrospective,” uses some of AmEx’s best-known ads featuring celebrities such as Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Henson, Tina Fey, Jackie Chan and Martin Scorsese (who also starred in Apple’s Sir ad).

“American Express’ timeless safety and security are now available on Apple Pay,” the ad proclaims. “The next evolution of membership is here.”

As highlighted by AdAge, the ad was created by advertising agency Ogilvy.

The basic message here is that while the technology you pay with may be changing, American Express’ safety and security is timeless.

Other financial institutions have run ads focusing on Apple Pay, including Bank of America, Capital One, Chase, MasterCard, Wells Fargo and others.

Apple Pay is available via Visa, MasterCard and American Express cards issued by over 60 banks and credit unions in the United States. The service works on the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3.

When the Apple Watch launches in April, owners of older iPhones will be able to use Apple Pay with their Watch. According to Tim Cook, Apple Pay is now responsible for more than two out of every three dollars spent on purchases using contactless payment across the three major U.S. card networks.
