LifeProof, the maker of insanely protective waterproof cases, has outdone itself at CES 2015 in Las Vegas with the announcement of the LifeProof fre, a case that is both waterproof and packs an extra battery for more power throughout the day.

The LifeProof fre will feel familiar for anyone who has used a LifeProof case before, with the original four-proof case that has protection against water, drops, dust and snow. It has a built-in screen protector, but still carries full access to all device features and functions.

The fre Power not only provides protection from the elements, LifeProof says, but can also help boost your battery if you run into a day without your Lightning cable or just need that extra boost, with an additional 2,600 mAh of battery power. LifeProof claims the case’s battery doubles the iPhone 6 battery life, while “smart charging technology” automatically shuts the case off when the device is fully charged.

I’m a little taken back that water and electricity are mixing here. The fre Power is said to be waterproof to 6.6 feet (2 meters) for one hour, drop proof up to 6.6 feet. Like other LifeProof cases, it’s also totally enclosed from dirt and snow when the case and all ports are sealed. “It meets military standards for shock and impact protection,” the company says.

“The addition of a waterproof power solution and universal accessory line take LifeProof’s industry-leading product lineup to a whole new level,” Pete Lindgren, LifeProof president and CEO, said. “fre Power and LifeActiv accessories allow you to harness the remarkable capabilities of the iPhone 6 and truly live without limits.”

LifeProof also announced a new accessory line-up.

  • Bike + Bar Mount – $39.99 – secures device to standard handlebars on bikes, motorcycles, jet skis and more;
  • Belt Clip – $29.99 – fastens at the hip, on a harness or backpack strap for immediate access to the device;
  • Multipurpose Mount – $29.99 – using screws or an industrial strength adhesive, fastens to walls, mirrors and nearly any smooth surface for hands-free viewing;
  • Suction Mount – $39.99 – great for transforming a smartphone into an in-vehicle navigation system, this element attaches to glass and other hard, non-porous surfaces to secure the device;

No word on pricing or availability for the fre Power.

    So cool

  • M_thoroughbred

    I want one Lol

  • Manuel Molina

    I have to say, while this case sounds awesome, I’m not a fan of the extra size and thickness this case makes the phone 6 or 6 Plus. But nonetheless, I think the case and its ideas are great.

    • Tobias9413

      It’s a norm for battery cases though. Most will add some thickness to the phone. I don’t think there’s a “thin” battery case

      • Manuel Molina

        That’s true. I see it to be decent for a 5S or 6, but the 6 plus would be seriously huge.

  • tariq

    Or you could get Sony Xperia Z3 or Z3c with two day (one and half really) and be happy

    • That’ll work for anyone not tied to one platform, not the case for most here on iDB.

      • N&LH

        It is a personal choice

      • Slifur

        Oh, here he comes again. Hahaha

      • Oh, there it bahs again…f*ck off doofus.

      • Slifur

        Stop trolling here. Go home to your samsung site. Hahahaha

      • The good old trolling with troll remarks…iSheeps never fail to reflect Apple’s hypocrisy.

      Avoid the Z3 at all costs. There have been countless issues from the glass cracking on it’s own due to overheating, to water damage on this “waterproof” device (which Sony does not cover). I bought one after swapping my iPhone 6 and it had a dead pixel and the left side of the device had light leaking through (so it was clearly not waterproof).

      Sent that one back and received another, no dead pixel, but light leaking again. I go online and sure enough many people are having this issue, not to mention the pink camera issue that Sony deems “normal”, and the people that have had the phone damaged in water with the flaps closed.

      Haven’t tried the Z3c, but with my experience, the complaints online, and the new releases every 6 months I am done with Sony after such a short experience. It’s a shame because it was one of the nicest smartphones out there.

      • Companies should just stop advertising there devises as water resistant, and stop going for thinnovation.

      • tariq

        But what if they are waterproof?? I haven’t had any issues underwater so far

      • They aren’t waterproof just resistant. This is an S5 that came in a few weeks ago. Not sure how deep it was but the liquid killed the touch response and front camera.

      • tariq

        I think you just had bad experience.. I always had Sony phones. They are great with camera quility and finally fixed their speakers. I have swam with my xperia Z and z3c. And it’s wonderful. But I do agree, their customer service is crap!!

  • White Michael Jackson

    I dont care if the case will make my phone look like an Htc device. I need the protection and battery.

  • Antzboogie

    If it was super thin then maybe but I’m good.

  • “Hey look! I just bought this brand new iPhone that took months, upon years to design. How does it look with this new bulky case?”

    Smh… I still cringe when I see a screen protector, if only my own parents would learn.

    • Ali

      Many people like to keep a high re-sale value of their phone.

      • Benjamin J Schwartz

        That’s why you do an AppleCare replacement right before you sell the phone. You’ll get more money that way. It’s what I do.

      • Ali

        For what reason would you use to have a successful replacement?

  • Benjamin J Schwartz

    And yet these guys still don’t have a single 6 plus case for sale. That’s why otter box already got my money a month ago.

    • RayRayBeav

      Well Otterbox got my original $35 for my original case, but as soon as LifeProof put out the Frè for my iPhone 6 I got it.

      Also, did you know that Otterbox and LifeProof are the same company now? They’re both owned by Ofter Products, Inc.

    • Otterbox owns Lifeproof though

  • Utrarunner5

    This looks amazing. The thing is. I already bought the iPhone 6 lifeproof case. I would rather not pay another $90+ for it.

  • Jason B

    $199 is my guess…

  • Casey

    I have had a LifeProof nuud, with the Lifeproof magnetic screen cover accessory similar to the smart cover on my iPad Mini retina since the day they became available, and it’s awesome. Expensive but totally worth it – I have tried many cases over time and LifeProof products are the best.
