TaiG Mac OS X

As has been the norm as of late, OS X releases of the latest jailbreak tools have lagged behind their Windows counterparts. The TaiG jailbreak, which released to much surprise early this morning is no exception.

But what if you’re an OS X only user who doesn’t have access to a Windows machine? Are you left out in the cold waiting until TaiG decides to release an OS X version of its tool? Not necessarily.

Inside, I’ll show you how easy it is to run a Windows virtual machine on OS X absolutely free of charge. Doing so will allow you to jailbreak iOS 8.1.2 even if you only have a Mac. Best of all, it’s absolutely free to do so. Check out our video tutorial after the break for the full how-to.

Update: this post was originally created for iOS 8.1.1, but you can follow the same steps to jailbreak iOS 8.1.2 using the latest version of TaiG.

Step 1: Download and install VMWare Fusion, which comes with a free 30-day trial

VMWare Fusion

Step 2: Download the Windows 7 Enterprise ISO, which comes with a free 90-day trial, and save to Desktop

Windows 7 Trial

Step 3: Run VMWare Fusion, and install the Windows 7 image

VMWare Disk Image

Step 4: Launch Windows 7 via VMWare Fusion

Step 5: Install VMWare Tools and reboot

Step 6: Open Internet Explorer and download and install iTunes

Step 7: Download TaiG for iOS 8.1.2 from our download page

Step 8: Follow the steps outlined in our iOS 8.1.2 jailbreak tutorial to complete the jailbreak process

Once you have your virtual machine configured, you can find it in ~/Documents/Virtual Machines/

You can always use your Windows 7 virtual machine for future Windows-only jailbreaks that are sure to come up later on down the line. I highly recommend that you hang on to this virtual machine for future usage. I tend to place the virtual machine file for Windows 7 on a dedicated USB thumb drive.

What do you use to run Windows? Do you have a dedicated Windows machine, or do you go the virtual machine or bootcamp route?

  • Chris Gilmore

I’ve been using VirtualBox which works amazingly! And it’s completely free too!

I do need to find out how to put it on a thumb drive though. That would be great.

    • Guest

      Good for you buddy.

      • Chris Gilmore

        Thanks, dickhead.

      • Jamie

Thank you for posting the info. Does virtual box come with Windows?

      • Chris Gilmore

No, unfortunately. :/ But I use a .dmg file of Windows that I have.

      • Jamie

Cool! Thanks for the info and posting!

    • Abi Manyu

      nice story buddy.

      • Chris Gilmore

Thanks to you too, dickhead. Just trying to help people who want something that doesn’t last just 30 days. Jesus.

      • Abi Manyu

        nice help there, buddy.

Cool story bro. Want a cookie?

    • Prince

Just copy the .vdi and .vbox file(or copy the whole folder) into ur thumb drive, right click ur virtual machine and click delete and select delete all files. To add the the virtual machine in the thumb drive to the list of virtual machines click Machine—–>Add , now locate the .vbox file in the finder dialog box. u can also use the thumb drive to run the OS on other computers.

    • DogeCoin

use dd terminal command to turn the flashdrive partitions into a .iso file

    • Robert Preston

Thanks for sharing bro. Haha just kidding I don’t know why everyone is being a jerk

  • Chris Gilmore

@JeffBenjamin, do you use a trial every time or do you have a Windows on hand?

    • Jamie

      I appreciate you sharing.

  • AnoNymouz

I’m not to anxious. They’ve already mentionted a Mac version. I’ll wait. Hope it’s not too long. But if I had to run this i would rather run in parallels.

    • Bruce Ngataierua

Parallels is great and I use this

    • QuarterSwede

Not a fan of Parallels myself. It’s almost impossible to iradicate once you want it gone.

      • AnoNymouz

I use parallels on both Mac desktop and Mbpr for work. I mainly run Solidworks 2013 on it and refuse to use bootcamp. I didn’t buy a Mac to give up the main os. Why would you want to uninstall it I the first place. It’s always a good tool to have. And why is it so hard for you to uninstall it?

      • QuarterSwede

Because when you uninstall it following their own directions icons and other files are still left behind.

      • AnoNymouz

This is why I do it manually. I got to finder>app>hit the plus icon>type system files>parallels>trash I do this for all sub folders as well.

        Thanks for making my point.

  • I used to have a Hyper V virtual machine to run Mac OS X for those once in a blue moon moments where a jailbreak was only available for Mac OS X…those days are long gone and so is that Mac OS X virtual machine

If I update to 8.1.1 from 8.1 does and jailbreak over again, I lose my jailbroken apps correct? Is there any backup program for jailbreaks that actually restores and works?

    • Fernando Carneiro

You don’t lose your apps, I guess. They will just show when it is jailbroken again. What one should do is, before going anywhere, to make a backup with iTunes. After all the process, just restore from this backup and voilá.

  • Mark Kramer

This seems pointless since there’s a mac version of the jailbreak available.

    • cole mahoney

      Their is?

      • Mark Kramer

Hmm guess that’s my mistake. I thought I just saw that a mac version had come out. Wonder what I’m confusing this with. Sorry.

      • cole mahoney

        Guess I’ll use virtual machine

  • Eli Montoya

Just had a threesome.i don’t know those girls. I just woke up and I wantt to jaulbrak my phone .

  • Antzboogie

I hope we can trust TaiG I heard they don’t use an official Cydia installation of Bootstrap. Saurik has stated that Pangu worked with him more closely then TaiG. Who should we trust?

    • Well, MuscleNerd said TaiG is more transparent than Pangu…

      • Niclas

“TaiG is more transparent than Pangu”
In terms of the exploits not being obfuscated, NOT the actual team or cooperation.
Pangu used official bootstrap and cooperated with saurik.
TaiG use their modified bootstrap and do not cooperate and also keep their motives and company information hidden.

Pangu cooperate with 25pp witch is a alibaba owned company.

  • Andy

    Excellent, thanks.

  • Fernando Carneiro

    Thanks, Jeff!

  • cole mahoney

Do I need to install iTunes

  • ax3ko74

I already used this trick when pangu8 came out. Am I still able to register the free trial with a new email address or they will tell that I was already register with different email and opened the softwares on my Mac?

  • Andy

Jeff, does it have to be windows 7 enterprise? can’t it be ultimate?

  • Scuba Steve

I can’t believe tutorials like this are actually required. Wow.

  • Pokieo

For some reason I can’t seem to get past 40% not he jailbreak. I assume it has to do with my iPad not charging/trusting my virtual machine. I have allowed the device to trust the computer, and yet the jailbreak just hangs. Does anyone have any ideas. I originally tried with Parallels to no avail, so I installed fusion and followed the steps here, only to have the same issue. iTunes recognizes the iPad and syncs it, but it won’t jailbreak. Thanks for any ideas!

  • RafaelMelo

i did everything correctly, but when the time comes and I connect my iPhone on the iTunes in the VirtualMachine, it doesn’t recognises it and opens the Mac’s iTunes

  • 1080pete

Just jailbroke iPhone 5 running iOS 8.1.2 using virtual machine on Windows 8.1 without a hitch. Surprisingly super easy, though I hate using so much space on my retinal MacBook with only 250 GB just for Windows. Thinking about buying one of those cheap $200 Windows laptops at Microcenter. Anyone bought one of those? Suggestions? Thanks

  • MG132606

I had to re-download everything and fusion says boot manager is missing. Any thoughts?

  • dtsm

Assume this will work with VmWare Fusion and WinXP?

  • Zoe Poole

The virtual machine windows wont work for me on my mac. I spent all this time downloading it though my computer wont seem to recognize it. It keeps saying “windows applications are not supported on your device” is that normal?

  • brad

Jeff, you are a God. Your vid tutorials are the best. Thanks for all you do!

Hi, does anyone have any problems getting itunes to open? Everytime I try and open it, a box opens asking me if I want to allow this program to make changes. Click either ‘yes’ or ‘no’ seems to have no effect at all…
