Pangu for Mac preparing environment

The Pangu Team released their Pangu utility for Mac earlier today, so Mac users who were waiting for compatibility with their operating system have no excuse to not jailbreak any longer.

In this post, we will show you how to use Pangu for Mac to jailbreak iOS 8.1. This post was created for an iPhone, but note that the steps are exactly identical, no matter what device you want to jailbreak (ie. an iPad or iPod touch). Likewise, any iOS 8 firmware version can be jailbroken using this tool, including iOS 8, and iOS 8.0.2.

Jailbreak iOS 8.1 on Mac

Pre-requisite: to avoid potential issues, it is recommended that you restore your iPhone using iTunes prior to jailbreaking, if you had previously updated to iOS 8.1 over the air. If you had already updated to iOS 8.1 via iTunes, then you’re good to go. Also make sure you backup your device before jailbreaking. In case something goes wrong, you’ll still be able to restore from backup.

Step 1: Download Pangu for Mac.

Step 2: Double click on the DMG file to extract the Pangu8 app, and save it to your desktop.

Step 3: Right click on the Pangu8 app and choose Open.

Step 4: Plug your iPhone in your Mac via the USB cable.

Step 5: Following the instructions on the Pangu8 app, unlock your iPhone and select “Trust.” Pangu will then detect your device model and firmware version.

Pangu 8 for Mac Start Jailbreak

Step 6: Click the Start Jailbreak button. Pangu will then display three different warnings, as you can see on the screenshot below. Make sure you read and understand everything here, and make sure you put your iPhone in Airplane Mode, then click Already Did.

Pangu 8 jailbreak warnings

Step 7: Pangu will then go through the jailbreak process, which might take some time, so be a little patient. You might be asked to turn off Find My iPhone during the process. If that’s the case, just turn it off.

Step 8: At some point, your iPhone screen will show a Slide to Upgrade slider. Just slide and let Pangu continue.

Step 9: Your iPhone will reboot, and once it boots up again, you should have the Pangu and Cydia apps on your Home screen.

Congratulations, you have successfully jailbroken your iOS device. Next step is finding some great tweaks to install.

Troubleshooting

If the Pangu app just closes on its own and leaves a blank Pangu icon on your iPhone Home screen, keep your device plugged in, launch Pangu again, and start over.

  • CS

Yes! Will get to jailbreaking once I hear there aren’t any major bugs.

    • Jailbreak Guru

There aren’t any bugs with the jailbreak. It’s just some tweaks aren’t updated to iOS 8.

      • BoardDWorld

On iPhone 4S it seems to be using up battery. I’m going to make sure I charge it overnight tonight and see how it goes on a normal day that doesn’t involve looking for tweaks. One thing that is definitely strange is it isn’t separating Usage and Standby under battery usage. They’re both the same at all times I’ve checked.

      • Samuel

My iPhone 5 crashes constantly. so does my brothers iPhone 5c

      • BoardDWorld

Are you on the latest build? I haven’t had any crashes or stability issues outside of what I mentioned above.

      • Samuel

Yeah, but I figured out that it was Phantom for snapchat that caused it..

    • CS

Jail broken on 6+ now. I’ve basically downloaded every tweak iDB has mentioned. And Eclipse 2..which is my favorite

  • Preben Faarkrog Hansen

unlock your iPhone and select TRUST ?????

    • Merman123

      Yes.

      • Preben Faarkrog Hansen

no trust on my phone ?

  • Al

Sebastien has jailbroken.. Finally! Jeff can finally relax

    • Damian

Jeff made a great point though and I think he was right. Cody and Sebastien sounded like grandmas about jail breaking problems, yet they run the most renowned website about jailbreak

  • Willie

jailbroke all my devices smoothly by following the instructions, there seemed to be no bugs! good job to the pangu team!

  • iltas

help gys i jallbreak but installing some packges frm cydia it wont show icon in springboard how to fix i restore twice and jailbreak plz help

    • Jailbreak Guru

Some tweaks don’t work on iOS 8.

      • iltas

        thnx bro

      • madrigalz

Do u have appsync installed? If so, uninstall it and reboot. You should see the icon on the SB

      • iltas

        let me check bro

    • f96lrs

      reboot

  • Brian Wiegert

Well it would be great if one could download the jailbreak for Mac. Pingu hasn’t updated their site to include the Mac download and you still only have the windows versions for download and not the Mac.

    • Omri Amit

wrong. there is the mac version. plus, you can find the download on the iDB’s downloads section.

      • Brian Wiegert

PLEASE provide me with a link then, cause every link I hit brings me right to the pages with only the windows versions.

    • Anmol Malhotra

Dont you even read the article.. Its availabe on i DB…
Its clearly written in additional info : Download Pangu.
      Idiot!
      And its pangu not pingu.

      • Brian Wiegert

Yeah I read the article and every link I select brings me to pages that only list the windows version. And excuse me, it was autocorrection that switched it to Pingu and not Pangu!! Where is this i BD crap?

      • Anmol Malhotra

If you cant correct the autocorrect then stop using it.. and its i DB not i BD… if i write i DB with no spaces , the comment goes for moderation..
And i’ve attached something to pleasure you.

      • Brian Wiegert

Thank you. Sorry I have a million things going on here, autocorrect is on cause I suck at spelling.

      • Brian Wiegert

Ok thanks but its not showing me a link that I can click on.

      • Anmol Malhotra

I can mail you the Pangu Mac ver if you want… 🙂

      • Brian Wiegert

        Just post a link. Thanks

      • Anmol Malhotra

        Remove the spaces :

Question: what if my jailbroken iphone running ios 8.1 slow down and has aloy of problem and I just want to restore it to stock ios 8.1 and rejailbreak and by that time there’s ios 8.2 already?

    • CS

You can restore your phone to stock 8.1 and rejailbreak until Apple has stopped signing 8.1 (which is going to be a day or two after 8.2’s release.

      • Slifur

Yes that’s why im asking. What if ios 8.2 has been out for about a month and I want to stay in ios 8.1 and jailbreak again. I guess it’s an iLex thingy but i dont know if that still work.

      • f96lrs

        ilex is working

  • Preben Faarkrog Hansen

my pangu window just gone while jailbriking

  • Bugs Bunnay

off topic: any jailbreak tweak to get non mfi usb chargers to work on iPhone 6?

  • bChon

If your Pangu window simply “closes/disappears” ..the jailbreak didn’t work properly. You will see the Pangu app on your springboard with no icon artwork (but just a blank white placement icon). Do not remove your device from your machine or freak out. Simply reload the Pangu app and jailbreak your device again. It should jailbreak your iDevice and when it finishes, the Pangu window will stay OPEN with the status saying “Jailbroken”

    Hope this helps others..

    • Max Rojas

      Thank you so much!!

  • Preben Faarkrog Hansen

did it, but what do i do with the pangu app ?

    • Jailbreak Guru

Click on the install Cydia option.

    • bChon

After all goes well, load up Cydia so that it can update its essential files (Your iDevice will seem like its frozen, but leave it be). After all the essential files have been updated, your phone will reboot. After that, you can go back into Cydia and remove the “Pangu” app on the springboard.

    HELP

When I try to jailbreak, it gets to Preparing the environment (2/6) and then gives me an error. Happens on both Windows and Mac. Solutions? iPhone 5S 8.1

    • solai

First do backup and fresh restore

    • Anmol Malhotra

Have you restored from iTunes to iOS 8.1?
And to have maximum success rate with Pangu follow these steps :
Setup as new Device and do no restore from backup.
Put your device on Airplane Mode and remove Touch ID or passcode and turn off Find My iPhone.
      Then jailbreak using Pangu tool.
After succes , restore from backup to get your data back. 🙂

Hope this helps. If you have any other problem do reply me 🙂

      • SIMON

Backup iPhone > Restore clean iOS from iTunes > Restore Backup > [Now] Jailbreak [with Pangu instructions] – It also WORKS PERFECTLY and extremely SIMPLE to do.

And remember – DON’T install UNSUPPORTED tweaks, just wait for upgrade.

      • Lucus Bendzsa

Thank you this helped me too. Iw is I didn’t have to restore they should fix this.

    • Patrick Ablefoni

      Having the same problem
      how did you solve it?
I followed the Jailbreak steps over 20 times now but still gives me an error

  • ProSzakal Aszakal

I cant open the pangu app its say ,,cant open aplication” any one know something?

    • solai

      post screenshot

  • ProSzakal Aszakal

here is a screenshot but is in my language but its mean cant open the aplication

    • solai

      where?

    • GuyWithTheThings

Right click on the App icon, and click “Open.” It should have a dialogue box that pops up. One of the options should say “Open Anyways.” Hope that works. 🙂

      • ProSzakal Aszakal

Hey I’m not noob I know how to open this aplocation but this time I always get this message can’t open aplication, I downloaded twice, trying on mac and MacBook air and same shit can’t open appocation, it’s no difference if I click double on it or right click and then open, olway same message…
I also tried open by showing package then osx mac and run by terminal but its say not permitted and log out. Just for sure I have check the options to install aplication from outside appstore.

  • butterfield

“No excuse not to jailbreak”? How about incompatible tweaks?

    • Tyler Smith

you sir are wrong. most tweaks are in the works and are almost complete.

    • How is that an excuse not to jailbreak? If anything it’s an excuse to jailbreak so that everything is ready to go as soon as your favourite tweaks get updated…

  • Tyler Smith

That was probably the fastest I have ever jailbroke a device. s/o to pangu team. smoothest jailbreak yet

    • J. Rockwell

Man, Geohotz “Blackra1n” was a one click 15 second jailbreak. But this was flawless on missed as well.

      • Tyler Smith

Ive only been jailbreaking since iOS 5 lol so redsn0w evasion and now pangu

      • GuyWithTheThings

JailbreakMe was awesome too. Open it in Safari on iOs 4.3 (I think, maybe 4.3.1 or something), tap install like installing an app in the App Store, and you’re done.

      • J. Rockwell

Oh shit I forgot about Jailbreakme. THAT WAS DEFINITELY THE EASIEST, AND MOST CONVENIENT.

  • Jesse

It’s overdue. However it’s too late for most of us that have already jail broken using parallels or another windows computer. But for those that haven’t yet jail broken on a Mac, it’s easier now.

    • Tyler Smith

I just restored my phone and jailbroke on my mac. can’t hurt

  • Evan Moore

Jokingly I think you should relink all your jailbreak stories now the osx installer is out. I have parallels on my mac just for these situations but there’s a lot of good stories you posted that may get missed now that more folks will jailbreak

  • DWayne Robinson

the file takes up a lot of real estate on my Mac

    • J. Rockwell

      39.1 MB is big??? lol

      • DWayne Robinson

I have a macbook pro 15″ and once Pangu is opened it takes up a lot of space on the desktop

      • J. Rockwell

man, I HATE when that happens. Use and delete:) What uninstall app do you use. I have been using AppZapper, works great.

      • DWayne Robinson

I use an app called App Cleaner, it does a great job

      • GuyWithTheThings

        I use that too

  • Nayk McNulty

I hawe a problem with iPhone 4s and this release for mac because caused me trouble

  • buttermytoast100

How is the battery life for the iPhone 6 Plus after jailbreaking?

    • Unicorn Drank

I haven’t had any battery issues with mines, the reason I know this is because I have testing it during my commute, I drive for an hour, and during that drive I use my music app and wake GPS the whole time and by the time I get to work it’s down by only 1% and the same has happened since I have JB. I did restore a fresh copy though not sure if that has helped and I am also using flux which I have noticed that it might deminish the battery by and hour over all

    • NP92

i only have 3-4 tweaks, not big changes like intellD and all the other shit, i only want springtomize, barrel, bioprotect.
I feel that is going 30-40% faster drain:/

  • Unicorn Drank

The Pangu team deserves a freaking metal.

  • J. Rockwell

Extremely glad that I waited. Super simple ‘one click’ mac OS version. Did you really think I was going to use a virtual machine, and then SSH Cydia? Thank you Pangu! Worked like a charm, Christmas came early not only am I finally using iOS 8 for the first time, but a jailbreak as well.

  • Abracastabya

Getting ready to dive in, but I’m seeing some conflicting posts on the backup/restore process.

    1. Backup through iTunes.

    2. Restore to factory settings through iTunes and set up as a new phone.

    3. Disable passcode, make sure it’s an airplane mode and that find my phone is off.

    4. Run Pangu.

    5. Restore from backup through iTunes.

    Is this the correct order?

    • Leonel Aquino

      Sounds good to me

  • Tommy

I think I’ll just with stick 7.1.2 don’t wanna have to restore all my data… I’m happy with my 5s as it is.. Anyone feel the same?

  • J_Haskins

    Help please:

Looks like I’ve screwed up my phone. I went through the process without a clean install of 8.1. I figured I could just do a restore if there were problems. Well it eventually rebooted and showed the apple logo, but soon after went to a red screen and rebooted. This loop ran for a while before I determined this didn’t look like something that should be happening.

So, I plugged in to my computer while holding down on the home button. As it rebooted again, it went into restore mode. I did the restore after that. However, once the phone rebooted, it hit the red screen again and rebooted. Now iTunes says ‘The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (9)’.

I tried switching charger cords, restoring from a mac running 10.10, restoring from a mac running 10.9.5. I’m on an iPhone 6+ and can’t get past the red screen of death and infinite reboots.

  • Lhu

anyone got this ‘almost full storage’ issue?

  • AuBrey Franklin

my phone will not turn on now it keeps loading the boot logo then turning back off….it got to the last stage where it was supposed to reboot now it’s doing this

    • Mohamad

same thing happened to my iphone 5 and ipad 2. i eventually unplugged the device after waiting what took forever. i guess it happened because i went through the process without a clean restore before jailbreaking. dumb but yeah. possible solution for you: hold the home button while you insert the cable while its attached to your macbook, keep holding till the connect to itunes logos show up. then do a restore to ios 8.1. if you still wanna jailbreak after you did all that, setup your phone as new before you jailbreak and you can restore your backup after. hopefully you did a backup of your data before your attempt at this failed jailbreak that caused the boot logo. i tried to do a restore of my data from my backup and i faced the backup password issue because the backup was encrypted. that was also a pain in the ass. after youtubing i found it was your apple id without any CAPS. if you happen to face the same thing, try that. it could also be your computer password or your phone’s passcode or even an old apple id from what i read in the comments of the video i saw on youtube. hopefully this helps. cheers.

      • AuBrey Franklin

thank god lol that worked. Thanks so much. it’s restoring now. So I don’t restore from backup if I want to still jailbreak? Cause I also didn’t do a clean restore the first time

      • Mohamad

if you want to jailbreak you’re better off not restoring your data until after you are done. no worries! glad it helps

    • iltas

did u set passcode if not
      try this
power on, hold volume up key+home button keep hold untill its boot if not restore it

  • adrian

there’s no restore function on pangu for mac?

  • Peke Went

    My body is ready.

  • Beck Hoefling

    Thank You!!

  • Edvard Rølvaag

    jailbreak in progress…

  • GuyWithTheThings

Does anyone have an iPod 5 that iOS 8 lags on?

    • rockdude094

i have one.. you want it ?

      • GuyWithTheThings

Lol I mean if you have iOS 8, does it lag? Yes I’ll take it.

      • rockdude094

Compared to iOS7 ? Id say 50% more lag. Moreover, iOS 7 is just a nightmare compared to IOS6 performance.

  • Wood1030

I’m sooo conflicted. I updated my older iPad 2 to 8.1/jailbreak and it seems ok but there are so many tweaks and apps that i use regularly that aren’t yet ready in the IOS 8 jailbreak that I don’t wanna risk losing them on my other devices that I use all the time…iPhone 5 and iPad Air.

I know there is a risk of no jailbreak coming soon after the 8.1.1 jailbreak killer, but my other devices are running so smooth on jailbroken 7.12 that I don’t yet see a compelling reason to update to 8.1

Obviously, if i was using a newer iPhone 6 or + (which i do plan to get, but not for another month), it would be a no brainer, but for now i just hate to sacrifice what is a perfectly operating iPhone 5 and iPad Air with FULL jailbreak capabilities for a (what seems to be), slightly upgraded IOS.

    What’s a fellow to do?

    • GuyWithTheThings

Whatever a fellow wants to do.

      • Wood1030

well, it seems this fellow is gonna stay put and keep a good thing as it is. I’ve played with my iPad 2 with the new IOS 8 and jailbreak and it just doesn’t seem worth it at this time.

      • GuyWithTheThings

I’m actually restoring and updating my iPod as we speak. I’m just worried it’s going to lag with iOS 8 AND a jailbreak… Oh well, I’m getting an iPad Air 2 soon anyways. Then again, my phone upgrade isn’t for a year and all I have now is a slide phone… So I’ll be stuck with a potentially laggy iPod 5, a MBPR 13″, and not a super portable but extremely useful iPad Air 2. Not necessarily bad things to be stuck with. I hope it doesn’t lag..

      • Wood1030

After updating my ipad 2 and playing around with it for awhile, i haven’t really noticed any more lag than it already had, being an older device. I have not installed that many tweaks on it yet either so, if you do have lag issues after you update, i would imagine it’s due to tweaks and stuff you install on it AFTER you update and jailbreak as opposed the jailbreak or IOS 8 itself.

        Good luck

  • GuyWithTheThings

Springtomize 3 for iOS 8 in a few days!!

    • Wood1030

Oh Geeeeez! Now I’m conflicted again. That app alone is almost worth the jailbreak to IOS 8.
I love it on IOS 7 JB

      • GuyWithTheThings

Lol. I’ll jailbreak my iPod (basically the same as your iPad, same internals) and I’ll let you know what the experience is like.

      • Wood1030

        sounds good…go for it 🙂

  • rockdude094

How do you restore and not get unjailbroken?

    • GuyWithTheThings

      You don’t.

      • rockdude094

Then how do you get the backup installed on your device after jailbreaking ?

      • Sandesh Dhuri
      • rockdude094

I felt the same way. What a idiot eh ?

      • rockdude094

Yeah what an idiot ! He should just kill himself now out of shame haha

      • rockdude094

        Nvm got it

      • Abracastabya

So I’m guessing restore from backup worked as it should after the jailbreak was complete? And the jailbreak is still intact?

  • rockdude094

    Jailbreaking woohoo

  • Lhu

airdrop enabler and jellylock working on iphone 4s for u guys?

  • Gilbert L

    thank you sir!

  • Carlos DeJesus

Pardon my unawareness but did the Pangu team patch the bug where if you had your passcode lock on and you rebooted you would go into the boot loop?

    • Chris

That wasn’t an issue with Pangu, Cydia caused that one and it’s been fixed since v1.1.14.

  • Caleb Tere

    Will this work on 10.6?

  • yader

Good luck with the WireLurker problem coming from China : (

  • TwinSon

All that is left is for Winteboard to be updated for ios8 and we’re golden.

  • Zach low

when you say restore from iTunes if you updated OTA do you mean restore from backup or do a fresh install of iOS8?

    • Chris

      Fresh install of iOS 8

      • Zach low

        Thanks

      • Chris

You can restore your backup once jailbroken

    • ProSzakal Aszakal

Fresh and after jailbreak or not backup

  • dnice

having an issue when my iphone 6+ now dies at 6%. prior to the jailbreka it went all the way down to 1% then died. also had this issue on my iPhone 5 after jailbreaking. anyone else have this issue?

    • J. Rockwell

You probably have to cycle your battery a couple of times. Should do the trick.

    • ProSzakal Aszakal

      Calibrate battery at least twice

  • SBG

Fun is back thanks PANGU and iDB

  • Miguel Alcibar

After JB does anyone with batery drain problems ? because I do 🙁

    • ProSzakal Aszakal

      Calibrate at least twice

  • maverickmax

if you are getting this error”unable to get resources.check your internet”.simplest fix is use hotspot shield VPN.(might still have to click “rejailbreak” button a couple of times after switching on vpn).happy jailbreaking xD

  • michael

Can you turn off and on your device without any problems? I turned off my phone and tried to turn it back on but it just stayed in the boot up screen. How do I fix that?

    • Chris

Are you able to boot directly into safe mode? You can do that by holding the volume up button along with the power button, don’t let go until the lockscreen appears.

If that still doesn’t work then the only option is to restore your device, two questions I have is did you use the OS X version of Pangu and did you disable your passcode, Find My iPhone and enable airplane mode?

  • Melma

    Kampaii
