r-jailbreak survey

The folks over on the popular subreddit r/jailbreak recently participated in a survey, offering up their favorite tweaks, themes, and other information. Over 1,200 people participated in the project, and the results offer a small snapshot of jailbreakers on reddit.

For example, of those that participated, only 51 of them claimed to be female, and over 700 fell into the 15-20 years-old age bracket. The most popular tweak, by far, in the group was Activator, followed by f.lux and BiteSMS. We’ve embedded the full results below.

Of course, we’re sure there are some anomalies here; certainly not everyone answered honestly—who would really pay $425 for a jailbreak? But I think there is still some good info in here. I found the breakdown of tweaks installed and crashes particularly interesting.

Both iOS 8 and 8.1 are jailbreakable via the latest Pangu tool. For the time being, it’s Windows-only and it has a handful of bugs, but that is expected to change in the near future. For more details, visit our Jailbreak page, or check out our podcast Let’s Talk Jailbreak.

Thanks Matt!

    iOS 8.1.1 kills jailbreak 🙁

  • Lurker22

Yeah still seems like no reasons to jailbreak anymore. In past it was yo plug major functionality gaps, but there really isn’t anymore.

    • CryptoCoin420

      umm, you are crazy.

      • Lurker22

Ok, please educate me what exactly is worthwhile from jailbreaking anymore?

        — Themes aren’t interesting to me (and just slow down the interface)
        — I dont need tetherme anymore as I get hotspot with my plan now
        — Custom ringtones and sounds can do in iTunes for years now
        — I can use Google Music to move music to phone without iTunes
        — Video players provide same as Google Music for videos
        — BiteSms I never liked the interface

The only functionality that is missing in iOS 8 at this point is iFile and F.Lux

See my post. I will jailbreak my phone if there were only one tweak: Multiiconmover. Why the heck Apple is still not adopting this is beyond me.

      • z1n

I would say: Activator, OpenSSH, being able to use bluetooth with non-apple devices, User-agent faker (rather handy if you browse a lot), iFile, Mobile Terminal, MultiTunes. I could go on but it largely depends on preference for what you want from your device. I don’t think you’ve used jailbreaks or your phone anywhere near to its potential. But that’s ok, for you it might be better to stay with a Vanilla OS. Less complications, less ability to customise. If you ever have a problem you can just backup/restore, no critical thinking needed.

        I love jailbreaking but…:
        Activator – sure
OpenSSH – you got a cable for that (when jb)

Bluetooth – very few usercases, stock works almost everywhere
User-agent changer – use 3rd party app for that
        iFile – agree
MobileTerminal – mostly not needed if you have iFile
MultiTunes – do people still use iTunes for music?

There are some extremely helpful jailbreaks, often for a limited amount of users.

      • z1n

My main understanding of JB is that it’s totally subjective and as your last sentence eludes, “extremely helpful jailbreaks”, it really depends on what you want to achieve. I don’t think you can ever really bash the intention of a jailbreak, only the use depending on the case.

        OpenSSH – I really dislike cables 😛
Bluetooth – Haven’t had luck with any Samsung devices and sending *any* file I want.
Which 3rd party app do you use for User Agent changer?
I use the terminal + SSH to access remote servers over my data connection (mobile data is expensive where I am).
Yeah I stream most of my music but I still grab music from friends (which often can’t be downloaded/streamed).

Main point is I have my device set up to suit my needs and that’s why there will always be space for a jailbreak community. If I want to change my boot logo to Batman I can, because I’M BATMAN *ehrm I mean because I can*

      • Niclas

My posts are my humble opinion.

        1 Cables are fast 😉

        2 3:rd party apps

3 Any decent browser will do, I use Mercury

4 Any ssh client on app store, I use iSSH

        5 goto nr2

      • z1n

        6. Profit??

That’s exactly what I love about the JB community, you end up having 10 different ways to achieve the same thing. I like one, you another. I think mine is a better way, you think yours is. Weirdly enough I enjoy being contested and even proven wrong.

I’ll have a look at Mercury, but I do like the speed of Mobile Safari. Damn the tabs system is still horrible though.

As Niclas replied below, most of your reasons accept iFile aren’t needed anymore…

    • Pablo Fernandez

      XBMC. One major reason.

      • Lurker22

As opposed to the many other players in the app store already? Or using Plex which provides much of the same functionality?

      • Pablo Fernandez

The only app that can beat XBMC is FLEX. Very good if you are used to it, but there are many people out there using XBMC in their HTPC.

      • Niclas

PLEX is better than XBMC on mobile devices.
XBMC is better than PLEX on desktop.

    • DannyPrecise

TetherMe is the only reason I still jailbreak.

  • Noah

From the raw data, someone would pay $9000 for a jailbreak…

    • MHCsk

Obviously you can’t trust that 100%

      • Noah

You but it was obviously for shits and giggles

    • Niclas

      Only from r/jailbreak…

  • RV

What’s with f.lux? is it really good?

    • Juschan

it changes the colortemprature of your sceen by day time and yes its great most useful tweak for me

      • RV

Tried it but it didn’t suit to my eyes. Maybe i’ll stick to the default temp

        Btw, thanks for the feedback

  • Juschan

well it seems i am completly the average haha

  • ousmanesokona

I don’t get it. I don’t use any of the top tweaks listed (just Winterboard as required). My main reason to jailbreak are: Multiiconmover, CCSettings, Copic, Timepasscode Pro, iCallAnnounce, Circulus, Groovylock, OpenSSH, Mobile Terminal, Protube, iFile. I find Activator and F.lux totally useless. Just my opinion.

    • Niclas

      That’s the beauty of it!
      (Jailbreaking is your choice)
