ipad mini 3 features

Without much fanfare, Apple also announced the iPad mini 3 to replace the iPad mini with Retina display, now known as iPad mini 2. Unlike the iPad Air 2, the new iPad mini 3 doesn’t defer much from its predecessor, at least not on the outside, besides the addition of Touch ID and a new color, as well as a new storage tier. If you want to pit both devices side by side, we have compiled this comparison of iPad mini 3 and iPad mini 2 tech specs.

Impressed much? Yeah, us neither.

  • Anmol Malhotra

    No iTunes 12.0 for Windows?

    • Ethan Humphrey

      I have it.

  • Troy

Is the same thing just that the 3 has Touch ID

    • Franklin Richards

Got to hand it to them with the secrecy. We would’ve never expected such a woeful “upgrade”

    • Ethan Humphrey

      Yes, yes it is

  • Manor

This is apple worst device upgrade in a long time, and I can’t believe it’s 100$ more than the 2nd gen iPad mini

    • Andy

The iPad mini 3 is to the mini line how the iPad 3 was to the iPad line (though the iPad 3 actually offered some improvements). Coincidentally both start with a 3.

      • Manor

The iPad 3 got the retina display, so it wasn’t a small upgrade as this one. And I don’t think the iPad really need touch ID.

      • Zzyzxd

Once you use password management app like 1Password or LastPass and like their integration with Touch ID, you want Touch ID everywhere.

      • Stefano ‘Graziani’ Polo

I think you meant you meant that the iPad mini 3 is to the mini line how the ‘New iPad’ (the one after iPad 3) was to the iPad line.

I was the one that got the iPad 3 (with old dock connection) when 6 months later, they introduced the ‘New iPad’ (with new dock connection) as really the only difference.

        I was extremely mad!…

      • Ara Rezaee

The real difference was the A6X

  • DriverDan

If I was selling an iPhone Plus and a new iPad Air, I wouldn’t be marketing my mini iPad much either, other than bringing it into the Touch ID fold. Great price for the previous mini though, I’m getting one.

  • Mr Mop

So the only difference is Touch ID? Wonder why Apple decided to do that.

  • Ahmed M. Afifi

by neglecting iPad mini 3 i feel its just a sale on iPad mini retina so it a good deal !

  • Onyxus_Music

  • Shawn

Well. This just proves that Apple hates the mini.

    • Capirexz

      100% Customer satisfaction?

      • Shawn

Yeah. You’d think they’d want to continue those numbers. I think that number might go down if people realize they paid $100 for Touch ID

  • Elvin Topalov

The iPad Mini 3 is essentially a $100 upgrade for touch ID from the 2nd generation. Really glad I bought the Retina iPad Mini a few months after it came out instead of waiting for this disappointment.

  • JoshuaHulgan

You can’t get all the advancements of the bigger pricier iPad every year for the mini for less $.
I bet this is what they stick to with the mini – updates every couple years.

  • iPodDroid

The iPad mini 3 is literally the iPad mini 2 with Touch ID. Worst upgrade EVER. I’d rather go with the cheaper model than pay $100 more just for touch ID.

  • Chris Tangler

so the same thing except for the addition of touch ID?

  • Not even 802.11 AC? Seems like yet another “Don’t Buy Me” marketing…this time, probably to push people to buying the iPad Air 2.

  • Fanboy 

The screenshot of the top says “1080p HD Video Recording but the article says “720p”?

  • HeavyComponent

I love Apple, but if you already have the iPad mini 2 Retina Display, it would be a waste to get the 3.

  • Manuel Molina

Wtf? Did Apple invest too much time on the iPhone? The iPad mini is the same shit with touch ID! Who’s paying an extra 100 to use there finger on the home button to unlock the screen instead of the screen

    • JoshuaHulgan

If I didn’t already have the mini 2 I certainly would. It’s still a great buy at $399 for an iPad.

      • Ashifur Rahman

yes, the upgrade is only for stupids like you.

      • Manuel Molina

So you would spend an addition 100 dollars just to open the pad with a thumb? Sorry, I’m not trying to offend or tell you what to do with your money, but 100 dollars extra for that feature is like telling me spend 100 dollars more on buying the same kind of car, but the car opens when I get closer with the key instead of pressing the button even when I’ll have to do it with the key close to the car.

      • JoshuaHulgan

Added thumbprint reader, new color options, and the storage options are $100 cheaper now. If I didn’t already have an iPad mini I would definitely consider it.
Right now I’m eyeing that Air 2.

      • Manuel Molina

Color can be done with a case. But truthfully, unless you want storage, 16 gb is the entry of 100 more still.

  • Sebastián Junca 

It´s just like the “iPad 3″…

  • X^-1

No A8 processor? What a joke!

  • Eli Montoya

Hahaha how I hate apple so much.. Still Waiting on that jailbreak!!!!

  • Fevostone

What a joke should be the same price of last year iPad mini 2 and lower the iPad mini 2 and they could of made it have the same chip and faster wifi and data…!! Apple are getting well greedy disappointed big time. Unless Apple know people won’t be buying the iPad minis because of the iPhone 6 plus…?????? Makes sense to me.

  • jakeopp

what a flipping joke apple…you call this an “upgrade”?

  • Franklin Richards

No wonder he just glazed over the iPad mini so quickly in the conference. Wtf is this? The last iPad Mini was awesome because it was essentially the same as the iPad Air but smaller. This is just pathetic.

  • GuyBey0ndC00L

100 bucks more for Touch ID lol. Apple you need rehab your clearly on Drugs when it comes to the Mini 3.

  • Guy Gascard

there is a omission on iPad 2 mini retina as i have one that has 128 Gigabytes

    • Chinch07

They are no longer selling it. The above picture is showing their current line up. To get 128 Gb you need to purchase the iPad Mini 3

  • $100 more for what?

  • Noah Mospan

Why are we not talking about the lack of an A8 chip?

    • Vince Reedy

That’s the biggest goof up I think. $100 more should buy you more than a $5 sensor.

  • Nirvana

The Mini 3 still uses the A7???? What a letdown!

  • Vince Reedy

Is Touch ID worth $100? What a joke. I was thinking about downsizing from the air 1 but not now.

  • totallymichael

Lol. With iPad Mini’s already being overpriced by about $100, is there really anybody out there who would pay $400 for this when you can get literally the same exact device minus Touch ID for $100 less or spend $100 more and get the significantly faster, thinner, better iPad Air 2 (with actual 2014 hardware)? Part of me thinks this is their way of eventually phasing out the Mini completely. There’s simply no real good reason to buy this, and judging by the two minutes they spent talking about it, I think they know that.

But I have to say, as someone who was trying to quickly sell my iPad Mini Retina (iPad Mini 2?) before it dropped significantly in value, this news actually makes me somewhat happy. I think I’ll keep it.

  • Abdullah Safdar

Is this called a upgraded version of ipad mini….?

  • Abdullah Safdar

This should be called ipad mini 2a….

  • Xee

Apple should have upgraded the useless speakers! Cant believe its got the same A7 chip. No incentive to upgrade…

  • Ethan Humphrey

They literally spent like 15 seconds talking about this

  • Yunsar

I think there probably will be a better refresh early next year, maybe with the 12 inch iPad
