EA Sports, formerly a marketing gimmick of Electronic Arts but now a brand that creates and develops sports video games, on Tuesday released FIFA 15 Ultimate Team as a freemium download in the App Store.

Coming in at a massive 1.06 gigabytes, this iPhone and iPad game features authentic football action backed by Electronic Arts’ massive marketing budget and whiz-bang campaign, with licensed player and team names, motion-captured animations and other goodies.

You can build and manage your own team, test your management skills in the Quick Simulation mode, participate in a quick match or test your skills in real-world weekly match ups.

The control scheme is always of major concern in sports games like FIFA, especially on mobile devices. FIFA 15 Ultimate Team features something called a “through pass” feature allowing you to master your kicks, passes, and shots with classic controls.

If that’s not your cup of tea, choose “Casual Controls” with fewer buttons. The game supports Game Center for rankings and achievements as well as physical ‘Made for iPhone’ game controllers for better accuracy.

Key highlights:

  • Build your ultimate team — Earn, trade, and collect superstars like Lionel Messi and Eden Hazard to create your own fantasy team. Choose your play style, formation, kits, and more.
  • Play in Quick Simulation mode — Put your management skills to the test with new Quick Simulations. Set up your squad, start the match, and watch it unfold. Make smart subs, tactical tweaks, and gauge team effort along the way. Your match results depend entirely on your ability to manage player skills and chemistry – taking authenticity to the next level.
  • Or take it to the pitch! — Master your kicks, passes, and shots with classic controls – now with the “through pass” feature – or opt for new “Casual Controls” with fewer buttons. You can even double tap the joystick to enable tactical dribbling for closer control of the ball. Plus, if you have an external controller – don’t miss the chance to use it on the pitch for the first time.
  • Real-world match ups — Play your favorite team’s next fixture, plus 3 other major match-ups happening around the world – every week!

“This is a highly detailed game of superior quality,” cautioned developers. “Please make sure you have at least 1.35GB of free space on your device.”

The game is compatible with any iPhone/iPad from the iPhone 4/iPad 2 onward and the fifth-generation iPod touch. Requires iOS 5.1.1 or later.
