128GB option could be exclusive to 5.5” iPhone 6

iPhone 6 backplate (NowhereElse 002)

Exclusivity appears to be the name of the game concerning Apple’s rumored 5.5-inch handset. Thus far, we’ve learned that Tim Cook & Co. could distinguish Apple’s first phablet-class device with several exclusive features.

These would presumably include (other than display size) optical image stabilization, an ultra-sharp screen at 2K resolution and multiple new sensors for measuring air pressure, temperature and humidity.

You can now put 128GB of storage on your list of 5.5-inch iPhone 6 exclusives…

If a new report Thursday by the Chinese blog Wei Feng [Google translate] is an indication, Apple may keep the 128GB option exclusive to the 5.5-inch handset.

An iPhone with 128 gigabytes of storage doesn’t sound outrageous at all.

Last year, a placeholder for such an item briefly appeared in a German retailer’s system. This in turn fueled speculation that the iPhone 5 would gain a new 128GB storage SKU. Instead, Apple went on to add a 128GB variant to the iPad lineup this February.

And just yesterday, another Chinese outlet asserted that the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will drop the 16GB SKU and offer only two storage flavors: 32GB and 64GB.

In this regard, adding a 128GB option to the bigger handset could serve as yet another differentiator from its 4.7-inch sibling.

And with massive 5.5 inches of screen real estate and possibly some exclusive content creation apps (i.e. Aperture and Final Cut Pro), it’s entirely conceivable that power users would have no trouble filling up 128 gigabytes with rich media and fat apps.

That’s especially going to be the case in light of the Super Retina screen rumor: games and apps with Retina assets will need even more storage for ultra sharp bitmaps and other assets.

My 64 gig iPhone 5s is now packed to bursting so I’d definitely find use for a 128GB iPhone in my pocket.

How about you?

How much gigabytes do you comfortably need in your iPhone?

wow that’s a ridiculous amount of space.

I want the best and nothing but the best. I could live with the huge display.

    • therealjjohnson

my 64GB is full. I welcome the 128GB. wanted it for the 5S

  • Dieselx13

Over kill considering they now have the iCloud where you can store most of your stuff in it like iPhoto, music, video, etc.. You can just download the ones you want anytime on the go.

    • Naqiuddin Ihsan Amj

Some countries have high data rates (expensive as hell) for internet connection. So iCloud use would be less practical for them.

    • Falk M.

I don’t want all of my photos in the cloud, that’s even before considering the NSA.

  • BugsBunnay87

all the possible aforementioned AND possible 128gb?? the extra 100 dollar premium is nothing if this is true. I’m still not liking it having to be bigger though. Seen mock up videos and wow, taller than any current phone on the market.

    • Falk M.

Doubt the 5.5er will come in 128GB only.

      • Kurt

I don’t even want to think of the rip off it would be. It will be either $200 or $300 price difference depending if the lowest is 16gb or 32gb. 128gb flash drive at a fast read/write speed is cheap.

  • Macdemon

How much GB???? I’ll take as MUCH as I can afford, that way I can keep all my episodes of Yes Minister, Yes Prime Minister, Dilbert cartoons, Harry Enfield, Little Britain and Prime Suspects all on the handset instead of having them in the cloud and downloading them if I need them.

And why can we not download from iCloud on 4G???

  • Gate

    I’ll probably go for a 64GB variant.
    Thanks for the post Christian!

    • Capirexz

What can you do with 16GB? Thank GOD!

  • Adam

I’m on 32 gb 5s now and I’m finding that its not enough mainly because of pictures. I had the 16 gb 4s and that got filled up pretty quickly as well. If a 128 gb variant comes out I’m on it. More storage is a must.

  • Sokrates

they would rather put in a larger battery

  • mlee19841

Let’s see what happens. Really looking forward to a battery improvement.

  • Qasim

I just need a super battery

  • pauleebe

Just sucks because I don’t even want a 5.5 inch phone, and apparently I’ll need that to get the best hardware.

    • Sachin

      Same here. Lol

    • Agree with that, 5.5 inch is far to big for me

      • Raashid

5.5 inch is far to big for me

        That’s what she said…

      • I know

    • Aman kapoor

      the feeling is mutual …

  • Martynet

There is never enough of storage. Especially when games are between 1-2 GB. My 64 GB 5S if nearly full.

  • Osama Muhammed

why would they put 5.5 inch over 4.7 anytime ? its screen size and not everyone will be happy with huge one

  • Stefano

I was thinking the whole talk about the “$100.00 premium”, may be a misunderstanding and may be very well applicable to the 5.5″ iphone 128gb only, as in $100 more for that tier

  • Abdl

Please is apple still signing ios 7.1?

    • Jonathan

7.1.1, yes, but not 7.1. If you wish to jailbreak, 7.1.1 is supported.

  • onesimpleclik

No one needs 128GB. Unless you plan to haul around a massive music/video library, that amount of space is completely overkill – especially with all of the great cloud services. That, or your just buying it for bragging rights.

    • therealjjohnson

      speak for yourself.

  • Isaac

If the 5.5″ iPhone 6 has more features exclusive to it, I’ll choose it over the 4.7″ model. I want the best and nothing but the best. I could live with the huge display.

i’m waiting since the 4s for apple to inovate, 128 gb for is a joke, that nothing for a “smart phone”. when people will stop to buy their bad product, they will start to really inovate!

    • Aman kapoor

problem with 4s users is that whe the iphone 6 comes out apps will not support the 4s so ppl like us will need to switch (no dobut the 4s is a mighty device )

I have a 32GB iDevice with 32 GB memory, and I’m not even close to filling it up (more than half free). I have 1 game, ~256 songs, 1,709 photos, and 37 apps. 27.5 GB actually available, and currently 18.1 free. I’m happy with what I have. I have my entire music library (yeah, not that large, but it’s what I like) and don’t need too many apps.

Care to share your info of stuff on your device? I’m just curious as to a comparison.

    • Joseph A. Ahmad

I have an iPhone 5s in Space Grey with 32 GB of storage. I have 1,244 songs (not my whole library either but I keep the rest in iTunes in the Cloud), 48 applications, and 2 HD movies from iTunes. I have 26.9 GB capacity with 12.4 GB for free.

      • Aman kapoor

16 gig device i thought it’d be enough, but when i swithced from 128bitrate music to 320 bitrate music my music ate my storage ,apps like facebook, spotify cache up data and their size goes from 90 mb to 300-350 mb , if u like to push device to limits with hardcode gaming ,then the 16 gig storage is way too less, i have a4s,p[lanned upgrade to 7 (i planned it for the 6 but the design sucks, and 6s will carry the same design)

      • Jonathan

        Thanks for sharing. 🙂

Anytime man! I love these comment sections, you guys have always been very useful time and time again. 😀

  • Kattman

Well I have a 32gb iphone5 and I have at least 13 gb of music 6 gigs of photos and videos and the rest is apps. I have 2 gigs left. I don’t like burning through my data for music or my videos either so a 128 gb is needed. I have a 128gb ipad air and it’s amazing I have at least 200 comics books on it and lots of big games too!

    I welcome the 128 gb iphone 6

  • mahe

    Srsly?
    I won’t play this game Apple …
You already lost me with 4.7″ …
Sticking to my 5s as long as possible or until there is a small Windows phone.

  • Naqiuddin Ihsan Amj

I pretty much do everything on my iPhone OTG so a 128GB is definitely for me. I have used 32GB and 64GB variants of iPhones before. Frankly saying, 64GB isn’t enough.

I live in a country with expensive data rates, so iCloud is a no for me.

Who needs 128 Gb on iPhone if there is cloud!

  • Benjamin J Schwartz

I’m constantly switching around thugs on my 64GB iPhone 5 because I don’t have enough room. I will definitely be buying the largest capacity, highest tier, new iPhone.

  • I have been waiting for a 128GB iPhone since 2008. I can fit all the audio from my 80GB iPod Classic and still have plenty of room for photos, video and apps. I really hope this happens.

  • Razick Rilshad

Yes drop the 16gb and replace with 32gb apple we have storage problem
