Cheaper 8GB iPhone 5c now available in India

iPhone 5c Blue Yellow

Following the phasing out of the four-year-old iPhone 4 in India earlier this month after re-launching the handset in January, Apple has now officially brought its cheaper iPhone 5c model with eight gigabytes of storage to the 1.24 billion people country, one of the emerging BRIC (Brazil/Russia/India/China) markets.

According to local reports, the 8GB iPhone 5c has replaced the aging iPhone 4 as one of Apple’s most affordable handsets, starting at Rs 33,500 (approximately $574) after a cash discount of Rs 4,000 (about $68) and a wireless service contract…

By comparison, the iPhone 4 used to be the only Apple handset that retailed below Rs 20,000 in India (about $342). The Times of India has more on the iPhone 5c prices and terms of purchase:

While the phone’s MRP is Rs 37,500, Apple is offering a cash discount of Rs 4,000. This brings down the phone’s price to Rs 33,500. Apple is also giving a case worth Rs 2,000 with the phone. However, Apple informs that it’s a limited period offer.

The 16GB variant is available for Rs 41,900 (circa $716), but a cash discount of Rs 2,100 (approximately $36) brings the price down to Rs 39,800, or about $682.

The iPhone 5c has arrived alongside the flagship iPhone 5s last September.

The colorful handset was meant to address mid-segment of the market, but was heavily criticized over its high asking price of $549/649 for the 16/32GB off-contract variant.

The device is tough to sell because for just a $100 more people can instead pick up the latest iPhone 5s with the speedy A7 chip with M7 motion coprocessor, an improved camera system with dual-tone flash, better build quality and of course Touch ID.

Responding to complaints, Apple introduced a cheaper 8GB iPhone 5c to cater to mid-tier markets where “LTE is becoming more established,” as Apple put it. The 8GB handset is available in more than two dozen markets around the world, though it has yet to hit U.S. shores.

I’m pretty sure people will not buy this, cause here in India people always go for BIG screen sizes, Longer Battery life, Unbreakable phones (Yeah I just said that!) and all the features that Apple doesn’t provide at the current stage but a company like Samsung will sell more in the Indian market, whereas people who prefer “class” will always go for Apple, I am saying this from experience and have seen many of my college friends going for Samsung and not Apple. (PS: I am an Indian and own an iPhone 5S 64GB version :D)

    • Abhinav Chaudhary

      Indeed, How about Xperia Z2

      • Mukund Bhatla

Sony was never my cup of tea but I like the waterproof feature in that specific model, overall maybe a good phone for a place like India. I prefer most things apple. So can’t say much about the phone :).

    • Lord Krishna

You have always been a person of ‘class’ as compared to your friends, haven’t you?
I am sure buying that Apple makes all the difference.
Keep it up, Apple loves you.

      • Mukund Bhatla

So now we have Indian gods telling me not to maintain a certain standard of living, and for your kind information, you are no one to talk about my friends, or anyone. Get it?

And yes buying that phone makes a lot of difference. No wonder globalisation is not working well for you.

And yes thanks for reminding me that Apple loves me. Does any company love you :S.

      • Lord Krishna

No need of getting your Apple pants in a twist.

If you haven’t edited it already, that’s what YOU said about yourself and your friends.

      • Mukund Bhatla

Calm down, none of us are buying the phone anyways.

Keep your chants to yourself. :).

      • Lord Krishna

If you have not already edited it, am sure you were trying to say ‘demon’ instead of ‘daemon’(although that could have been interesting too). But then anyone can make such typo when using iphone’s limited real estate.

Btw, I only have love inside me – have killed the devil long back.

Wow, such iGreed, much blatant rip-off, very limited none-expandable storage, so cheap-ass look, don’t buy. Wait for the OnePlus One; same specs as Galaxy S5, great build-quality, off contract price of $300.

    • Mr Mop

It’s only available by invite at the moment.

      • https://twitter.com/MrElectrifyer MrElectrifyer

Still more than worth the wait if you want such high-end specs in a phone. If you don’t want such, the Moto G is still a better deal.

    • Cameron Chao

But thats not an iPhone. Furthermore, Sebastien Page himself is a strong advocate for a the build quality of the 5c, even saying he wished it had the interior specs of the 5s.

8GB is very less in today’s world. Facebook app takes about 224MB on my phone. (100MB app size + 124MB document and data).

  • sriram varadarajulu

no offence but Xolo, Karbonn , micromax and apparently moto G are gonna rape Apple’s iphone 8gb 5c here in India

    • Mukund Bhatla

If people started thinking like you, the crime rate would touch the sky!

      • sriram varadarajulu

if that’s the case then it already is.. people with common sense will go for better hardware at cheaper price my friend

      • Mukund Bhatla

See, I respect the way you think but people around the world prefer apple as a better company. Let me tell you something. I had a Samsung galaxy ace plus before I bought an iPhone and the Samsung stopped working within 3 days, the display had some dead pixles and when I went to the Samsung store they refused to give me a replacement and I had to pay ₹2k to get the phone repaired which I just got 3 days back and on the other hand my iPhone got spoilt within 2 months and yes it was my fault, It slipped off my hand by mistake and the proximity sensor stopped working which caused some annoying problems and yes I couldn’t have a conversation on a call since the sensor would touch my skin and call would go on loudspeaker, etc. So I payed a visit to a nearby apple store and they gave me a replacement within 2 days.

The whole point is the cheaper phone you get with better under the hood features, the less possibility that you may even find a store to repair it. I don’t think karbonn, micromax and other company’s have a service centre, which is authorised. Whereas when you pay, you get better services.

      • Abhinav Chaudhary

        Why so?

      • Mukund Bhatla

Cause rape is a crime and he said that other mobile phone company’s are raping apple, so the crime rate would go up my friend, anyways the amount of rapes which occur in India are no less that we should make company’s rape each other. JK.

  • n0ahcruz3

    RIPOFF

  • Mohammad Ridwan

    Yikes!

    • Abhinav Chaudhary

      Lol yeah

  • Lord Krishna

This phone would be a non starter in india. Apple in general can’t compete in terms of features at this price point. Other brands offer more features, open platform(android) and not all have bad service network.
Apple consumers in india have mostly been vanity-based(citing class etc). A ‘cheaper’ offering would even miss that consumer base.
    Thanks for the well-written article.

    8GB phone ~$600! Wow!
    5c-8GB = $574, 5c-16GB = $682: 16GB for over $100…
