Apple Store (Opening 001)

Last night, KGI Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo sent out a monster research note to investors with a timeline of when he thinks Apple will release their new products this year. He also offered details on each product, which he’s learned from his supply chain connections and other sources.

We’ve already covered Kuo’s iWatch predictions, which called for a “fashionable” smartwatch with advanced features like biometric sensors and wireless charging, and now it’s time to look at his iPhone forecasts. The analyst sees two Apple-branded smartphones launching this year…

Again, Kuo agrees with previous speculation that Apple is building two different handsets: a 4.7-inch and a 5.5-inch model. They’ll have the same internals though—just like the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display—including an A8 processor, 1GB of RAM, and of course Touch ID.

Display-wise, the analyst believes the 4.7-inch model will feature a 1334×740 Retina display (326 ppi) and the 5.5-inch a 1920×1080 display (401 ppi). Admittedly, the resolutions are odd, but it looks like both panels have the same aspect ratio as the iPhone 5—meaning no need to redesign apps.

As for appearance, Kuo expects both phones to have slimmer bezels around the screen (10-20% narrower) and thinner profiles of just 6.5-7.0mm. He also thinks that Apple will move the iPhone’s sleep/wake button from the top to the side, in an effort to make the larger devices easier to operate.

Finally, Kuo calls for an NFC chip in both smartphones—a technology that Apple has thus far avoided in its mobile products. Keep in mind, though, that the company has filed several NFC-related patents over the years, and is believed to have pulled NFC chips from the iPhone 5 at the last minute.

The 4.7-inch iPhone is expected to go into production as early as May, ahead of a likely September launch, while the 5.5-inch model is believed to be slated for a later Q4 debut. Kuo sees Apple ending production on the iPhone 4 and 4s, with the 5s and 5c rounding out Apple’s smartphone lineup.

It’s worth noting again that all of this intel came from an analyst report, and despite his track record, nothing is certain. But should Kuo’s predictions pan out, what would you think of the new iPhone(s)?

So much for one handed use ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

    • now i can’t fap and change to next porn video at the same time anymore :/

    • Maxim∑

      *complains when phone is 4in*

*complains when Apple increases display size*

      • RarestName

Sometimes I really pity them lol

    • Stephen Hagans

Not sure how much one handed use will be affected. The actual size of the phone may not change very much, just the screen.

      • RarestName

If they do increase it, it’s not like my iPhone 5s or Moto G will immediately stop working 🙂

      • édith Dupont

Well , it will if you’re an iSheep

      • RarestName

        What’s an iSheep?

  • Technocrz!

this resolutions and ppi is real deal breaker for me, if apple will not increase resolution and ppi, this long time Fanboy will buy HTC one M8 google play addition. off course I’m talking about 4.7inch, i cant go with higher than 5″ display. if wish this rumour isn’t true.

    • JoshuaHulgan

      These resolutions?
What’s wrong with the 1080p at 401ppi? Sounds pretty sharp to me…

      • They want 4K and it being made out of real sapphire along with 24k gold, yet cost $200 off contract

      • Jeffrey

He’s talking about the 4.7 inch iphone which, according to this article, will not increase PPI. Then again, i do not have the same opinion as him

      • Technocrz!

        thanks Jeffrey

      • Jeffrey

        No problem;)

    • XboxOne

The HTC One M8 with weak camera?!

      • Technocrz!

Yes there is no other choice in Android, or may be nexus 5, but im sure apple will not lose me.

  • Eni

1 Gb of ram? i hope that is not true

    • omrishtam

1 gb is enough, not like in android, iOS doesn’t eat RAM so even now with all of the big apps who take a lot of RAM usage, 1 gb is still enough because there is no need for more, it will just add up more to the cost.
of course there is the jailbreak thing which has all of the tweaks and stuff and this requires a lot of RAM. so in that case it isn’t enough.

      • even with 50+ tweaks, the ram usually will never go under 150mb. I did that with my iPhone 4 and the iPhone 5+ tends to never go much under 350mb.

      • Alex Blaha

When my 4S was jailbroken the half a gig of RAM didn’t do it for me, always stayed around 40-50mb and I constantly had to close apps.

      • Eni

is not enought for anything, i hope that stays just a rumor

      • XboxOne

1 GB is not enough when viewing intense webpages. 2 GB at least will solve all crashes.

      • h4nd0fg0d

U must not play RAM intensive games. 1G is so not close to enough. Period.

      • You probably have no need for true multitasking. True multitasking requires RAM, and there’s no changing that…

    • Maxim∑

      It might be 1GB DDR4

  • Jeffrey

Let’s just hope and think this guy is wrong, 1334X750? What is he thinking? Also, he says that the ‘a larger’ iphone will come first with 4.7 inch, and later in the year the iphone 6 with 5.5 inch, meaning he thinks the 4.7 inch iphone isn’t going to be called the iphone 6. The sleep wake button may very well change places but what does he ase that on? This guy obviously knows nothing about the upcoming iphone 6.

    • Technocrz!

      I hope so

    • Huh, it’s over 9000 !!!

Noob, KGI Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo is not a random people, he got solid track records regarding iphone leaks in the past few years.

Larger iPhone is a must this year, if they (Apple) still keep using the tiny 4″ screen, millions of people will jump ship. Small screen restricts innovation.

      • Jeffrey

Sigh, did you hear me say i didnt think the iphone is going to have a larger screen? I do think so, i only think 1334X750 isn’t going to be the resolution, just wait and see… Or go back playing runescape and calling other people ‘noobs’

      • grumpyfuzz

Apple will call the larger screen innovation…

      • Jeffrey

no they won’t… don’t talk about apple if you don’t know anything about them, have a little respect. apple only calls things innovation when it really is. take a look at apple’s product history, they probably are the most innovative company ever

      • grumpyfuzz

You truly know Apple, just because you like their products doesn’t mean you know them… With the iPhone 5, they were mainly just advertising the larger screen. I’m pretty sure the same will be done with the iPhone 6. Also, Apple said the iPhone 5 was “the biggest thing to happen since iPhone”, and everyone talks about how innovative the iPhone was, so they are calling it innovative. And they may be the most innovative company EVER (in tech), but as of right now, Google is doing much more innovative things.

      • Jeffrey

i do not know apple because i like their products, i know apple because i have followed all their product announcements and rumours every day for the past 4 years. You do not know me, but if you would, you would know that i know A LOT about apple and how they do stuff. Also, apple AWAYS says ‘this is the biggest thing that happens since the original iphone’ when they release a new iphone, so it has absolutely nothing to do with the iphone 5 specifically, neither with the screen size. Apple only calls things innovative when they really are, i’m sure the upcoming iwatch and iphones will come with innovative ideas. the iphone …s always has an innovative tweak added to it, 4s= siri, 5s= fingerprintscanner and 64 bit processor in a phone, 6s=? lets just wait and see. Google may be doing some big things right now, but lets just wait and see what apple has to offer us in the second half of 2014.

      • grumpyfuzz

The iPhone 5 didn’t really have any innovative ideas… Like I said, the bigger screen was the main selling point. I’m almost certain it will be the same for the 6, and small incremental upgrades to the 6s.

      • Jeffrey

yeah the iphone upgrades without s’s, the 3g, the 4, the 5, are mainly improved on the design section, and apple never said a bigger screen was innovative, and that’s what you say. apple will also not say that the iphone 6’s bigger screen is innovative. also, the iphone 6s will definately have some, at least one, killer feature. i think it will be a new smarter way of wireless charging and maybe something else.

    • I bet both will be Full HD

      • Jeffrey

yeah me too, that’s why i think this guy is stupid

  • Fredric Kanngard

What a joke! Unless iOS 8 brings splitscreen multitasking, quickreply for text messages, better maps and better integration with third party apps, im switching this year.

    • Jonathan Liu

This is just speculation. There are no official details yet.

    • Martynet

splitscreen multitasking? for what? quick reply? Useless. When I swipe the message on lock screen it brings to to the reply field immediately.
Not much happened? What are you actually expecting from a mobile device? I think iPhone does pretty much everything people need at the moment and does it pretty well. Also, I haven’t seen e device with better camera yet.

      • Fredric Kanngard

Well first off, i guess you have never jailbroken your iPhone.

        1. Quick reply for textmessaging to me, basically means that you can reply to text messages while in an app without actually switching between apps back an forth. After 7 years with the iPhone i can say that this is something thats really annoying. Why should i have to let go of the content at screen just to reply to a text message? Such a hassle. They even implemented it into OS X for some reason, it makes more sense to use it on mobile since OS X supports multiple windows.
Tip: Look up BiteSMS, by far the best text message experience on iOS.

        2. Splitscreen Multitasking, i think should be a given – its 2014, bigger screen means more real estate to work with. Why keep all this annoying switching between apps when there are ways to be more productive with “splitscreen” of apps.
The point is that the focus is taken away from what you want done, everytime you just want to simply reply to a text message or copy text from a document.

        3. iOS as it is hasn’t changed mutch besides from the looks of things. Trust me, im a “fanboy” of Apple, but even I are starting to get bored and irritated at the OS. It’s just grids, not mutch action going on with “at a glance” information. By that i dont mean that they should make “tiles” like WP, or “widgets” like Android, but perhaps something like the HTC One (M8 & M7) where you have a flipboard style overview of everything going on.

      • Yehya Mansour

I have a Galaxy Note 3 and since I got it, I have used the multi-window and the other gimmicks few times. I’m rooted and I got full access to my phone, that’s what I like about my droid, add to that I LOVE the widgets, sometimes they are life saviors. Even though I’m still rocking 4.3, the System seems to be pretty much stable. Yet, you can’t have an open source without some bugs for sure (Samsung flavors the software but it doesn’t create it).
However, if Apple makes a bigger screen I would definitely switch over to iOS again( I still have an iPhone 5 and I hate it cause it’s tiny).
Just to note somethings out, I can gurantee for you that the Apps that you will run on your 5 inch M8 won’t be crisp and smooth as your 5.5 inch iPhone 6. Moreover, you just contradicted yourself by saying I want a Google Play Edition and then hinting at SplitScreen-Multitasking, don’t forget that only Touch-Wiz has that 😉 So your lovely 5 inch M8 won’t have it.
Finally, I have to agree with you that we need more on the glance information, but we can get that by jailbreaking 😛

      • Fredric Kanngard

Cool! Me personally – im not that big of Samsung fan. But i can see why people like them 🙂
By the M8 i didnt mean the split screen multitasking but rather the magazine like “Blink feed” which i think looks great for displaying content “at a glance”. Something i really miss with the iPhone.

Jailbreaking is awesome, love it. But after using the iPhone for 7 years now (jailbreaking, beta testing every OS version etc) its getting really tiresome waiting for a jailbreak every update Apple makes to the OS.

There are just small things that recently has started annoying me. Like Quickreply for text (7 years in and still not possible). It really annoyed me to see they brought it to OS X but not iOS which is where i see the best purpose of the feature.

However, if i were to switch – i’d probably go with the Lumia 930, that design Nokia has going on with it just looks so sexy 😉

      • Yehya Mansour

I’m pretty much sure we will get quick reply in iOS 8 cause we got it in OS X Mavericks 🙂 I have to say I really love this feature on my mac 🙂

      • Fredric Kanngard

yeah it’s a great feature that is like 4 years overdue. Such a shame.

      • Once Apple gives us split screen you will understand. I have it and love it. So useful.

      • Fredric Kanngard

Would love to use it on a potential 4.7 inch iPhone 6 🙂

      • Yehya Mansour

You have it on a ?

      • Note 3 and windows 8

      • Antzboogie

Your wrong on that one buddy I have to agree with Fredric split screen multitasking and Bitesms should be a feature.

  • Technocrz!

I’m 100% sure Apple will not take any risk of low resolution iPhone, and they will never give iPhone name to bigger size phone, save this comment and again read it in Sep 2014

    • Yehya Mansour

Dude, chill it’s not low resolution, everything will look crisp just as on the iPhone 4/4S/5/5s, they will increase the resolution and keep the same ppi!

      • Technocrz!

I dont think so, with bigger screen they need to put more ppi

      • Yehya Mansour

Dude please understand, ppi is resolution/size ratio apple will increase the RESOLUTION and the ppi WON’T be affected.

      • Technocrz!

        Dude please teach me.

  • therealjjohnson

So does anyone think the picture quality of their current iPhone retina screen is bad? I thought it was smaller than the human eye can detect. Why exactly are their people claiming that this new screen size isn’t going to be good or sharp enough? Come on now…we are talking about some that’s 4.7 in small.

    • My iPhone is clearly not as crisp as a 441ppi. It’s a big difference.

  • Ahsan76

please some one contact apple and say people are not wanting a relocated button…

  • Alnando Espaillat

I wonder how much they will price the larger device. Hope they rework the prices i wouldn’t be surprise if the larger 5.5 cost 800 dollars. The regular iPhone cost 649 without contract -_-

  • krazzykoder

good but out of my budget :p

  • Justin Rowe

So now Apple are copying Samsung….I won’t be getting a 6 if it really does have a stupidly large display

    • XboxOne

      what’s wrong with you?

      • Straw hat

    • Christopher

      Good, don’t need big pockets.

  • ɑղժɾҽա

They really need to increase the PPI and resolution of the display. The iPhone 5s’ display is subpar to those of Samsung and HTC, which are in the 400 ppi range. I can still see the pixels on my iPhone 5s and I can’t watch 1080p videos.

    • XboxOne

I can’t see pixels on my iPhone 5s and I can watch 1080p videos using McTube YouTube app.

      • There’s a big difference between 326 and 441ppi. I was shocked first time I saw it. Is it necessary? No, but it sure is so much nicer!

      • On my iPod touch you can see it but you have to be close

  • oralarts

You keep stating that this guy is credible, but where is the evidence to support that? For the past couple of years, Sonny Dickson and Mark Gurman have been spot on.

I follow Apple very closely, and I’ve yet to see one “analyst” who is accurate in their predictions.

  • Ishaan Malhotra

    No more 326ppi

    • Why mad? 326 is “so 2010” Higher ppi is noticeably sharper. Just compare two phones. There is a big difference.

      • Ishaan Malhotra

What? That’s what i said ” no more 326 PPI.” I want more ppi

      • Oh, I read it as you were upset that it would go higher. Sorry broski

I bet both phones will be 1080p. I’ll bet anyone.

      • Ahmad Abdullatif

        I hope for better camera

  • ♋JULY 17♋

    1gb ram sucksss change it

  • ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

    • Guest

      Aren’t you already dead?

  • ♋JULY 17♋

They need to see what the jailbreak community is doing and pay attention to that like if we get auxo2 on stock version would be awesome

  • Steven Code

Lol 1gb of ram while the Note 4 will have 4gb lol

  • ProfessorX1®

Isn’t this pretty obvious by now?

  • n0ahcruz3

720p for 4.7 lol as usual apple using old tech calling it magical to ripoff customers. If im paying top dollar for a tech it should have top of the line tech not outdated tech.

  • Nonya Business

I hope this is true! I really want the 5.5″ iPhone.

  • Donovan

Which High-End smartphone can I get when these come out? (Older phones, but I kinda want a new one after this 4s dies)

  • 1gb of ram is way overdue for an upgrade. It’s like running windows xp with only 64mb of ram

  • Tnt4ever

APPLE must Consider Dual Sim options.
