Here’s an entertaining little anecdote to start your week off. By now, I’m sure most of you know about Flappy Bird; that it essentially became an overnight success, and that its developer pulled it from the App Store yesterday. But the saga may not be over just yet.

Shortly after the game was pulled on Sunday, iPhones with Flappy Bird installed started appearing on eBay. It’s not too surprising that folks would want to capitalize on its popularity, but what may catch you off guard is that some of them are going for big bucks…

That’s right, eBay user pindrus is selling his used 16GB iPhone 5s with Flappy Bird installed, and at the time of this writing the bidding is up to $99,900.00. It may sound fishy, but the seller is a long-time eBayer and there have been over 70 bids. So it seems legit.

ebay flappy bird

That certainly doesn’t mean that all of these bids are legitimate, though, and eBay could step in at anytime and put a stop to the madness before the auction ends in 6 days. But for the time being, it certainly seems like this person is going to make the easiest $100k ever.

And this isn’t the only one. A quick search of the site finds at least a dozen iPhones (and a few Android phones) with the Flappy Bird game installed going for well over $50,000. Each seller pitches the device as a collectible, using terms like ‘rare’ and ‘discontinued.’

The game itself was also a major money-maker, reportedly earning developer Dong Nguyen an average of $50k per day in ad revenue before he pulled the plug. It’s unclear why Nguyen removed it, but from the context of his tweets, he disliked his newfound fame.

Update: it appears that, as expected, eBay has stepped in and pulled the above listing, as well as several others.

  • Oy vey.

  • Donovan

    WHAAAAAA? This is madness.
Selling iPhone 4S with flappy bird pre-installed, 75.000 USD. Anyone? Anyone?

    • Jonathan

      I’ll buy it for $2.

    • Michael Kuzmin

      is this a decimal point?

  • Luis Martinez

Why not just download the .ipa for free?

    • NaSty

      Ye know too much….

    • Chris Barnett

Exactly! It’s already been signed by Apple, so it can be done unjailbroken too.

      • Mhmd Bassam Nasyr

        you dumb idiot 😀

      • Jae. Just J.

        How do you do this?

      • Jonathan

Download the .ipa from online, then click Application in iTunes, then click and drag the .ipa you just downloaded into the Applications and iTunes will do the rest.

      • Jae. Just J.

Thanks. I’ll give it a try. Not sure where to get an IPA but Google should have something. Thanks again.

      • jonny12168

All you do is google it I would use Mediafire to get the download other websites will now make it so where you will have to a survey I’ll upload it to Mediafire and make it public

      • Jae. Just J.

I’ll look for it there. Thank you

      • Smallcut Powers

Wait, you need to patch your device with 25PP to make it work. Email me at nojailbreakapps@outlook.com if you want me to post it on one of my websites.

      • Jae. Just J.

ok. I have no idea what a 25PP patch is.

      • Raja Qaisar

I got 3 phone with flappybird installed in the UK n can sell all 3 for 20k

      • Sam Khan

It asks for the original app owner’s password

      • Smallcut Powers

Patch with 25PP and it should work.

    • Jonathan

Because he was hoping to make some easy money.
What a dishonest world we live in today. -_-

    • Luis Martinez

Yeah just google “Flappy Birds .ipa” and someone should definitely have it posted somewhere to download it. From there just drag and drop to iTunes and you’re set. Sync and you’re done. Lol, 100k for an iPhone!

      • Gary Wooten

        I have a I phone 4 with flappy bird for 15 k

  • Melvco

What I’m wondering is what would you do about your iTunes account? If you were to sign out of the App Store or iCloud, the game would disappear, so you’d essentially have to turn all of that over to the buyer.

Sure, you could remove your credit card from the account, and create a new one, but it seems like you’d lose all of your purchases. Obviously for $100K I’d make it work, but what’s the least I’d do it for? Tough to say.

    • Gerardo Castro

You can install the app on the phone then sign out of the store. The game will not dissapear. It will simply require the iTunes account password when it needs an update, and since it won’t be updated anymore, we don’t have to worry about that.

    • You’re definitely not a pirate

“That’s my way of increasing the resale value of my iPhones; I crack my TomTom/Shazam app and install it on the freshly jailbroken iPhone along with some essential Cydia tweaks.”

I despise people like you. Don’t get me wrong if people want to pirate then I’ve got nothing against them personally but installing paid applications and tweaks for nothing to give to others is just plain wrong and you should not be allowed to sell those devices. To think so many people wonder why developers are leaving the scene…

      • Smallcut Powers

I find it ok if it is/was a free app, since you still get hit with IAPs and ads, but it’s not right with paid apps. The devs need their rightful money.

    • Raja Qaisar

I got 3 phones flappybird installed in them in Uk can sell all 3 for 20k

  • Willie

ok im selling my phone with cydia installed! is million a good starting price?

    • Jonathan

10 million should do it. After 7.1 has been released.

  • Juan Ramirez

If this is actually legit and sells, then I’ll definitely consider selling my 16GB iPhone 5s. I’d sell it for a couple thousand, don’t necessarily need 100K. Poor College Student.

    • on3simpleclick

      Same bidder, multiple accounts.

      No one will spend 100K on a 16GB 5S.

      • Kurt

Similar thing happened about two years ago with a prototype iphone 4 if I remember correctly. two people were bidding like crazy driving the price up and then all those bids were eventually deleted. Same will happen here I’m sure.

  • David Gitman

I can give the game for free

  • Daniel Beecham

    Jailbreak, Tweak, Download .ipa. Done.

  • So damn stupid, there are lots of similar games in the App Store, f.e. Ironpants…

  • Nick

Smells of money laundering to me.

    • on3simpleclick

Money laundering through Ebay. Hm, that’s actually a great idea lol.

  • Aditya Tuli

To simplify things, an itunes account holder is able to share his content with 5 other people, so selling flappy bird through this method for $100 each would seem more sensible and viable!

    • Brandon D

Not necessarily. When pebble was sending out beta after beta of the new software to test (ipa’s), it was just a link from their Dropbox; the app wasn’t linked to any iTunes acct. You just downloaded it and dragged to iTunes.

      • Aditya Tuli

Because that app was under the public beta license which meant that itunes would authenticate its .ipa from any source unless it had the right licence, these are known as receipt-less apps! But every app that we download otherwise(free or paid) has a digital receipt and that receipt is unique for every download!

  • on3simpleclick

I’m 100% certain that no one is going to buy any of those iPhones.

  • GorGorWoeWoe

OK this is just getting stupid.

  • havark

Shame he will have to leave his account details on the phone! LOL

  • Stanley Chen

If people didn’t notice, the developer updated the app with better performance and more colors the day before he took it off the App Store!

  • NaSty

Just wondering what would this mean if someone wanted to restore the device? Wouldn’t there still be the iOS 7 iCloud activation thing? It seems way too dodgy to buy an iPhone for just this game…I never played it myself and it doesn’t look very good tbh

    • Saria Hajjar

If you ever get the chance to play the game… don’t.
If they pay me 1$ to play the game, i wouldn’t.. annoying little game that you can’t win nor have a progress except your score.

  • Matt Dowdy

As if anyone would pay that amount just to play flappy bird. If someone was that desperate to play it you could pick up a £40 android smartphone and sideload it from any number of places, no jailbreak (or second mortgage) required!

  • Tyler

Wonder what they would pay for a jailbroken iPad Air with flappy bird

  • omrishtam

i thought humanity can’t go any dumber…but now….i have lost any faith in humanity

  • NekoMichi Kobayashi

If you think that’s bad, wait until you see the eBay listings selling screenshots of Flappy Bird high scores, or even selling tips on how to succeed at the game in exchange for cars (not even exaggerating here).

  • Sean Cua

I could easily install that on a jailbroken device. psh.

  • appl3h4ck3r

This absolutely childish and ridiculous. Anybody who would buy used iPhones with…that game…..obviously has problems and addiction issues. I frown upon thee who buys crap like this.

  • adriean

  • Arthur Geron

  • Arthur Geron

Jailbreak+Appsync? Looks like a desperate try of someone to become rich, could it be all part of the plan of the creator of flappy bird?

  • Fk Flappy bird sht. -.-

  • n0ahcruz3

Are u f**king kidding me? How can people be this stupid

  • Y2J

I’m going to miss my iPhone…

  • mordechai eliyahu

Step 1) jailbreak a iPhone 2)install vshare 3) install flappy birds 4) sell on eBay for $8,000 5) gamble the $8,000 and loose it all

  • Leo Saint

  • pegger1

Sounds all fake to me. Who’s going to pay $100k for a game they’ve never played. If they played it, they would have it already.

  • Arcest

That’s stupid to pay for it. You can install Flappy Bird IPA with iTools. No matter you don’t have it actually installed. No jailbreak is needed!!!!

  • mark

  • Brandon D

If you’ve downloaded and synced your phone w iTunes just drag the IPA from your iTunes media/mobile apps folder on your phone with ifunbox or something similar to var/mobile/documents/downloads…I believe that is where appcake stores all the ipa’s people download. It’ll be auto populated in the ‘downloaded’ tab next time you open appcake.
I don’t think you can install ipa’s via ifile, just .deb files…but I may be wrong.

  • Denise Baker

I have flappy bird on android. My phone is one month old. How can I sell it?

  • Ben Seiler

I have an iPhone 5 with flappy birds on it!!! I’m selling it for $1,000,000! Any takers? Bill gates? Anyone?

You lot do realise that people most likely will not be paying for those. Look at the completed listing, they do not have verified payment, people just bid for the laugh and then do not pay.

This shite happened before when people were bidding 150000 pounds on eBay for a virtual FIFA 14 card (Pele).

  • Dj Redbull

    “Item has been removed.”

  • Sam Khan

I like how he is still charging $6.45 for shipping

  • XboxOne

Idiotic people would buy the iPhones with this game installed for a lot of money.

  • Șalaru Diana

Selling iPhone 4S with flappy bird pre-installed, 30.000 USD. Anyone? Anyone?

  • RyanFoley

Wait, but won’t they have to wipe the phone before they ship it off, otherwise it’ll have their phone number and information?

  • Oh man! I have the Flappy Bird Tron Edition. That’s gotta be worth like $500k!
    Give me your money please!!!

  • Smallcut Powers

Some people don’t want to jailbreak. So just patch with 25PP and install the IPA.

    • Drake

      doesnt work on 7.0 .4

      • Smallcut Powers

Yes it does, before being jailbroken, I had lost my copy of Gridlee and had needed to install through 25PP. I was on iOS 6.1.3 – 7.0.4

  • Brandon Miranda

Lol it’s on my iPhone 4. I’ll use the the fact the my i4 is discontinued in the U.S. and most other parts of the world to get 250k.

  • Reece

    Made me think of this

  • eoighan

But when you buy the iPhone with flappy birds one thing you’ve forgot it’s hard rest by eBay seller lol, only flappy bird is you.

  • Next up… iPhones and iPads with iOS 6.1.3 selling for a $1 million!
    Coming soon!
