Resized Couria 3

Couria is a jailbreak tweak that allows you to have true quick reply and quick compose functionality for the Messages app in iOS 7. Currently in beta testing, it’s a tweak that offers a lightweight alternative to the likes of biteSMS.

We’ve taken some time to put Couria through its paces in our hands-on video walkthrough. Check inside for more details on how this promising tweak works.

Once you install Couria, you’ll find a settings panel in the stock Settings app. From here you can enable Couria, and switch between two preinstalled themes. I highly recommend sticking to the iOS 7 based theme, but if you wish, there’s a pre-iOS 7 theme available to use as well.

Couria’s settings in the stock Settings app

Couria allows you to quickly reply to incoming messages by tapping on the banner notification for the message, or by swiping on messages displayed on the Lock screen. The end result is a sleek looking overlay that allows shows the contents of the threaded message, and allows you to quickly send a reply to the person waiting on a response.

You may also assign an Activator gesture to invoke Couria’s quick compose feature. Using the quick compose displays a list of all of your message threads starting with the most recent one. You’ll find the ability to append images using the insert icon, and venture back to the full message app by means of the app icon shortcut in the upper left-hand corner of the overlay.

For security purposes, Couria features a passcode setting, which works independently of the passcode set for iOS. The passcode can be established to protect Couria while the device is locked and/or unlocked.

Couria shows lots of promise, but it’s not without its opportunities for improvement. Some may gripe about the tweak’s look. It features an iOS 7-centric style, but some may feel that it still lacks the polish necessary to make this tweak compete with biteSMS. I also found it annoying that there didn’t appear to be a way to keep the message overlay open after sending a reply using quick reply.

Considering that this tweak is still in beta, I’ll let the developer continue his development process before I provide any real criticism. Besides, we do plenty of critiquing on the latest episode of Let’s Talk Jailbreak, which is set to air tomorrow.

If you’d like to give Couria a shot, then you will need to add the beta repo address to your sources inside of the Cydia app. Just go to Manage > Sources > Edit > Add > and type the following repo address: Once added, you can find the beta version of Couria, along with some other developer goodies like extensions for WhatsApp and Tweetbot.

What do you think about Couria? Do you think that this tweak can supplant your usage of biteSMS? Be sure to share your thoughts about the tweak in the comment section below.

  • JulianZH

I don’t know anyone I knew still use stock msg app haha. It’s either whatsapp or wechat.

    • Zod

      iPhone users text 😛

      • Doreen Steven

        ✈✈✈✈ ✈✈

    • Aimon

whats the difference on wechat when compared to whatsapp.. I just don’t get it. why have so many messaging app on your device

    • Mike

or bitesms. Pretty sure people use that too.

  • Max Rojas

This is what apple needs for its default messaging app!

    • Jonathan

      iOS 8. :/

      • Mike Colacone Saal

i remember saying iOS 5.. iOS 6… definitely iOS 7, since mavericks has it.. and the wait continues.. lol

      • Because the feature is in OS X Mavericks, I have a strong feeling it will make an appearance in iOS 8. I’ve never thought Apple would add this feature, but its arrival on OS X makes me believe that Apple will introduce this feature in the next version of iOS.

      • ✪ aidan harris ✪

Or alternatively Apple is trolling us, quick reply will be removed from the next version of OS X and never added to iOS…

      • Jonathan

I thought for sure iOS 7, and even more so when Mavericks received it. AGH Apple… -_-

  • Jonathan

OMFG YESSSS! Praise the lord almighty god lol

  • Mike P

What about a little icon in the status bar like bite does, so you can access the message from anywhere after you dismiss it the first time.

    • Gabe

i use activator so i can press and hold the status bar and it works anywhere. Is that like what you mean? sorry i used bite for like 5 min not familiar with it.

      • Mike P

yes, kinda. While what you are suggesting would open up Couria or something like it. This would give you the ability to reply from anywhere. This icon that I refer to also has a number in it notifying you how many you have as well.

      • Gabe

I see. Yeah that would be nice hopefully we see that in the final version.

  • Rafael Castillo

I’ve been using this tweak for the past few days. It’s good, but watch out when you use the Whatsapp extension because it does not send the message sometimes. Other than that, the tweak is great. (I am aware that it is in beta and hopefully the bug’ll be fixed soon.)

    • Ishaan Malhotra

Whatsapp extension not working for me :(. For some reason the banner notification also isnt appearing, even though its enabled in the settings

    • Siddharth Desai

WhatsApp has to be running constantly in the background for this to work.

      • Steve Jobs

whatsapp working really great and stable on my iphone 5s. much better than the ios6 quickreplay4whatsapp tweak because that tweak was very buggy. couria do a really good job for a beta version.

  • AaronSwain

Nice, but nothing to make me change from biteSMS.

    • Damian W

Great to have alternatives but BiteSMS is unbeatable so far. Someone should come up with some quickreply loaded with extra features. Just for the sake of having fun.

      • Al

I was a iRealSMS user… Never really liked BiteSMS until I seen the work that they have put in.

They are constantly improving it & added features to it. This Couria is light alternative, but there’s simply no stopping BiteSMS. It’s becoming the sole reason why people jailbreak.. And that’s saying something.

  • Prasoon Singh

This is so much better! BiteSMS got annoying because I kept getting popup windows when I was typing or watching a video.

    • Soooo, you could switch your notifications to “Banner” and it wouldn’t show the biteSMS pop-up window all the time? That’s how I’ve got it set up.

    • Zzyzxd

You can just switch off “auto show QR” in BiteSMS’s QR settings.

    • Malay Mody

dude you’ve been told how to fix this like 5 times on twitter hahaha

    • Damian W

You realized BiteSMS is loaded with options to set notifications to your liking

  • Jason Dieter

Dimming the lock screen after a QC/QR would be a nice option as well, similar to bitesms. And I agree, the icn in the status bar would be great also.

    • Steve Jobs

i messaged the developer and the dimming thing on the lockscreen will be fixed in the next update!

  • jlb1705

This tweak is instantly better (and better looking) than BiteSMS because it provides just the features I need and none of the crap that I don’t. Quick Compose, Quick Reply, and a stock look – that’s all. I don’t need a replacement for the stock Messages app, just these features to supplement it.

    • totally agree with you bro.

    • QuarterSwede

Exactly. Better said than I could have. Might … might, jailbreak for this.

    • Aimon

I just have to agree with you on this one. we really don’t want much change, just a little improvement wud be nice. Only reason I even jailbroke my device.

    • I personally can’t stand the interface on BiteSMS. The features aren’t bad but I’ll take Messages+ over even this new one or Bite. I can’t wait for that with ISX7.

    • Steve Jobs

      so true dude!

  • Elvin Topalov

    Does this support iPad?

    • Damian W

  • asdlb4

Dear Bite SMS, I was just writing to let you know that I found someone else. It’s not you, it’s me. Well, actually, it’s you. I can’t say I won’t miss your landscape rotations in portrait mode once in a while, or the silly way you like to hide all but the first of multiple text messages from me, or even all that bloated weight that you carry around. But to be honest, it was just a matter of time before somebody better (and less pink) came along, and unfortunately that day is here… Love, Me

    • 4p0c4lyps3

Thts like leaving ur current fine girl for one u haven’t even touched yet. Kudos to ur rational thinking.

      • asdlb4

Sure, Bite IS certainly fine — fine and bloated with a gazillion features I don’t use or need. I’ve been waiting for a loooong time for this exact tweak. And yes, I have “touched” her and she works beautifully.

      • Malay Mody

works beautifully for anything that isn’t a group message, that is. group messaging with couria is awful. claims to have been fixed in the past 2 updates but i haven’t see anything work better than the first beta. i’ll stick with bite until i can be sure that everything works perfectly

      • Damian W

Since when having options is a bad thing. We all complain apple does not give us choice and now you guys complain you have too many options with BiteSMS . It is ridiculous. Just keep the extra options off and end of the story.

      • Achy

        And kudos to your stupidity.

    • Damian W

It was funny but you went overboard

  • 4p0c4lyps3

May give it a try, but I’m all about bite.

  • Jonathan

    Jailbreak, I love you.

  • Siddharth Desai

The reason why I am going to switch to Couria is because it is a centralized quick reply system and it has extension of WhatsApp.

  • Tobias9413

Only reason I’ll consider switching is because I don’t use enough of the features biteSMS has to offer to pay for it and so I have to deal with the ads at the botto that bother me

  • I love my biteSMS because of the many more features, such as passcode for the actual app, templates, scheduling, etc. Idk, personal preference. I would still recommend Couria to people who would just want QC and QR for their messages.

  • AndroidDogHeatandSteelersFan

YES YES YES !!!!! hopefully better than messages+! because those guys take forever, i swear they abandoned us.

    • I doubt they have and so hope you eat those words when ISX7 changes the Notification Center, again. I also am growing impatient though with the lack of any updates.

  • Richard A Forero D

Does this tweak drain battery? , and im agree to use this tweak for whatsapp!, is working !??

    • AndroidDogHeatandSteelersFan

dont know who downvoted but he was asking a question. does this drain battery?

      • Jonathan

        And who downvoted you?

      • AndroidDogHeatandSteelersFan

i don’t know but i think its quite unusually funny.

    • Are Jaye

Haven’t noticed any sudden battery drainage out of the norm yet. Works great! Cleaner layout than bitesms IMO

      • Richard A Forero D

        Great!, works Nice with whatsapp?

      • Aerobahn

There is a whatsapp extension. It needs whatsapp to be running in the background to work.

    • Steve Jobs

thats the downside of the tweak because it definetely drain battery because you have to running whatsapp or the message app in the background. otherwise quickreplay didnt work!

  • Are Jaye

Are there any tweaks for ios 7 that adds the status bar icons for new messages, mail, etc? That’s all that’s missing from this awesome tweak. ✌️BiteSMS

    • Skoven

You can try OpenNotifier, but i don’t know if it’s iOS 7 compatible.

  • Mike M. Powell

Idk y…but I find this way smoother than bitesms =[

  • David Woje

I like the simplicity. Bitesms seems a little cumbersome…too many bells, whistles, and pink. This seems strait forward.. I’ve been waiting for a quick reply tweak ever since intellesceenX.

  • GL1

Guess there is no reason to wait for anemo then??? I haven’t jailbroken my 5s yet because I was waiting for a quick reply solution that used the stock msg app.

  • noksucow

Anyone else running into issues with the install? In settings, I’m getting a “There was an error loading the preference bundle for Couria” message.

  • Eric M

    I just want messages+ already.

    • Jonathan

Could you please change your avatar to something more iOS 7ish instead of >iOS 6? 0_o

  • Mike Colacone Saal

I noticed it doesn’t tell me if someone on iMessage is typing while I’m replying.. no biggie i guess….

  • rockdude094

    Sick !!!!

  • Zachary Sloane

Love it. I did have it crash once already when reply’ing to a 3 way text from the lock screen.

  • chunyangooi

How do I get the numbers along with the alphabets on the keyboard like that on stock apps?

    • 4p0c4lyps3

eXkey. Also, Showcase is an awesome keyboard tweak tht shows lowercase letters on keyboard.

  • Zack Whitman

installed this and its not showing any banner notifications for messages now, any fix for this or is anyone else experiencing this?

    • Aerobahn

Have you checked your notification settings for messages? Maybe it reset somehow? I know that has happened to me once.

  • Mike Colacone Saal

Hopefully, when its fully released they make it to where you don’t have to open the messages app to see a photo…

  • M_thoroughbred

Another thing I notice was when you send a picture through QC/QR It won’t display the photo or any photos that are in the conversational thread. ( I know it’s in beta )

  • JohannASSburg

OMG this is exactly what I’ve been looking for! a quick reply tweak that shows THE WHOLE CONVERSATION. Thank you developer! 😀

    • Mhmd Bassam Nasyr

      bitesms does the same

      • Siddharth Desai

While replying, bitesms doesn’t show a new message if the person sends it after you’ve begun to reply. This one does it live.

  • Carlos Cedeno

Is it possible to use the volume button to quick compose like bitesms that was my favorite feature lol

    • M_thoroughbred

Yes by assigning it thru activator

  • Diego Gastón Milano

I have to admit it has been nicely designed, although I stopped using QC and QR some time ago. On the other hand, this is how biteSMS QC and QR should be coded instead of having all those useless buttons they add to their interface. Hopefully they get more inspired now and learn how to add some minimalism like this one.
    Nice job!

    • mahe

You are able to disable whatever button you like in the settings.

      • Diego Milano

Even if you can, the result is not as good as this one.

  • iRy757

Is that ExKey? Is it working better now?

    • 4p0c4lyps3

Works flawlessly now on my 5S.

  • Aimon

if the dev adds in whatsapp on this one then job done.

    • Siddharth Desai

He already has a WhatsApp extension on his repo.

      • Aimon

found out that and installed it already. i think its a bit bugy though coz wen locked i dont get notification

  • Merman123

On the tweaks that are actually pretty awesome , Jeff sounds all bored lol!

  • lanceuppercut47

Kind of wish the passcode prompt could look a bit more stock like, looks a bit out of place imo.

  • William

For what it is, I don’t think it does it very well. I was excited to pick up quick reply since I spent my cash on iRealSMS and haven’t been satisfied with it and still can’t use it on my iPhone 5s. As for Couria, I have to tap the banner in time before the stock notification goes away to open the quick reply option. I don’t like that. Also, it doesn’t work on the lock screen. Even if you activate the phone and tap on the notification for a new text message, it does not open a quick reply option. I think the idea is self defeating if it was primarily for quick reply as the article above stated.

    • Merman123

Change your alert style for messages to “Alerts” and it will open it immediately. As for the lock screen issue , something might be conflicting with it. It works fine every time for me.

      • Aimon

i am having the lock screen issue plz anyone help

  • Reyas Mohammed

Expecting quickreply for Whats app and Viber… if possible skype too 😀

  • Dylan Tyler

Jeff how do you keep your phone so fast when your always downloading new tweaks. do you rejailbreak?

    • He removes most tweaks after reviewing them.

      • Dylan Tyler

When you install a ton of tweaks files are left behind that will slow down your phone.

  • kahlil velayo

its like Messages from maJun the developer. haven’t updated their tweak yet for ios7. it’s look the same good thing this one is for free. but its a promising tweak..

  • Noah Mospan

Anyone else having a problem with the whatsapp extension not working with an activator gesture?

  • camelwalk

Hey guys. I just installed Couria and anytime I try to send a message through it it looks as though it goes through but does not send. No messages are being sent. Messages app works fine though. Anybody else having this problem? I’m thinking it’s a conflict with maybe call bar, or quick contacts. Maybe BytaFont. Any help would be appreciated if anybody knows. I contacted the developer but haven’t heard anything

  • Jonathan

A high of 72?? Can I please have some weather? 0 F here for cryin’ out loud. -_-

  • mike

Anyone remember Anemo? Came out just a bit before iOS 7. Same exact idea.

  • Jackson Daily

Not working for me. Running iOS 7.0.4 iPhone 5S. When I tap to reply to a notification, the HUD appears, but there is no conversation listed, and no elements to reply. It is all white. After a reboot, the issue is corrected until I attempt to quick reply to a second message. On this second message, the white screen issue appears again. I hope this will improve with further releases.

  • 4p0c4lyps3

Well, took it for a test run. Worked just fine and I must say I was impressed with its simplicity. Works well with Tinybar which allows u to modify the size and duration of banner notifications. I’m back on biteSMS until this tweak receives further refinements. Good stuff none the less. 5S/7.0.4

  • Felipe Moscoso Cruz

The extension for WhatsApp is what makes it complete. It just needs some finishing touches, but overall it’s great!

  • Need for whatsapp and kik please!! Would gladly buy it then! (If 1$ never buy tweaks more than that, plain greedy)
