Ayecon Hero

If you’ve been jailbreaking for any decent amount of time, you’ve surely heard of the legendary Ayecon theme. This is a theme that set the standard for detail when Retina displays were still a relatively new feat in the mobile device industry.

A lot has changed since Ayecon first came riding over that hill on its white horse, reinvigorating the stagnant theming space in the process (I know some people will debate Ayecon’s design, but they simply can’t deny its influence.)

Flat is in, skeuomorphism is hated (and dead). So where does Ayecon fit in with this wave of change? Will Surenix, its designer, abandon the style that made Ayecon a success in the name of staying with the trend? Or, will he instead, stick to what made Ayecon work? Check inside for the full scoop along with the detailed video walkthrough.

The answer to that question is obvious if you’ve seen the screenshots accompanying this post. Of course, Ayecon won’t abandon its skeuomorphic style in favor of iOS’ new direction; it bucks the trend and does so proudly.

If you hate iOS 7’s icons then you’ll feel right at Home with Ayecon for iOS 7. It brings back the familiarity that was a staple of iOS for six successful generations. Ayecon is still one of the, if not the most detailed themes to ever hit Cydia. Super high resolution displays are the norm these days, so the effects are not as eye-popping as they once were, but it still looks awesome.

Ayecon SpringBoard
The insane level of detail is still present in iOS 7

You’ll notice the meticulous detail on every single one of the stock iOS app icons. Even popular third party applications, jailbreak or otherwise, get the Ayecon treatment. You’ll notice apps like Instagram, iFile, Dropbox, and many others, all benefit from Ayecon’s insane level of detail.

Ayecon features:

  • Auto-app mask for all App Store and Cydia apps
  • 100+ re-designed icons
  • Gorgeous new (classic) dock
  • 9 beautiful high-resolution wallpapers
  • Status bar icons
  • SMS bubble enhancement
  • PSD file (to create your own icons using ayecon’s style)

For apps that haven’t yet been themed, they’ll still fit in well with the overall style. This is because Ayecon applies an auto app mask to every single app icon on your screen. The mask lends a three dimensional effect to the app icons and gets rid of the flat style that permeates the whole of iOS 7.

Skeuomorphic haters apply here

But what if you’re like me, and you prefer the look of iOS 7? What to do then? My advice is to enjoy the other aspects of Ayecon while using the iOS 7 app icons. This means that you can still reap the benefits of the changes to the dock, status bar, wallpaper, and messages without having to use the skeuomorphic hyper-detailed app icons that are the theme’s hallmark.

It may seem a little sacrilegious to promote using Ayecon without using the app icons that the theme is known for, but skeuomorphism is a very polarizing subject. I mentioned this to Surenix, and even he agreed; there’s still a lot to benefit from even if you don’t want to use Ayecon’s app icons.

The dock

The best argument for using Ayecon, outside of the tweak’s namesake feature, is for its dock. The Ayecon dock is more akin to the dock present in pre-iOS 7 devices. It brings the sense of having more breathing room to play with. It’s much like the effect that happens when you tear down a wall in the house t open up the living space; it makes the iPhone 5s and other 4″ screen devices seem taller.

The status bar

If you hate the new dots that represent the signal strength in iOS 7, then you’ll appreciate the status bar that comes with Ayecon. Surenix’s theme brings the cleaner looking status bar present on pre-iOS 7 devices. This feature, just like the dock, can be independently enabled or disabled via WinterBoard.

Ayecon for iOS 7 comes with nine new wallpapers that accentuate the look and feel of the theme. Each of these wallpapers can be enabled via the stock Settings app > Wallpapers & Brightness.

Messages bubbles

The is one of the more subtle features of Ayecon’s theme, and it too can be enabled independently in WinterBoard’s settings. The message bubbles with Ayecon have a more squared off look, but it’s hard to tell the difference without comparing each side-by-side.

WinterBoard, being just recently updated to work with iOS 7 and the arm64 devices like the iPhone 5s, still has its fair share of bugs and fixes in store. Saurik acknowledges as much on WinterBoards’s Cydia page. With that said, the only issue that I encountered while testing out Ayecon was a simple caching problem. If you notice that some of the features don’t show up when you have Ayecon installed and enabled, try the following:

Step 1: Open iFile, and go to /private/var/mobile/Library/Caches/com.apple.UIStatusbar

Step 2: Delete all of the files located in this directory

Step 3: Respring your device

Doing this should clear up any caching issues that occur when enabled or disabling certain features of the theme.

I always make it a rule to be up front with you guys, so I’m going to be honest about how I plan on using Ayecon. As you know, I’m not a big fan of skeuomorphism. I used to like it, but ever since iOS 7, I prefer the cleaner look. This doesn’t mean that I won’t use Ayecon on my daily driver, I’ll just use it without enabling the SpringBoard option in WinterBoard. This means that I can enjoy the other benefits of Ayecon, namely the dock, without having to give up the flat icon style prevalent throughout the whole of iOS 7.

Ayecon Featured

Even years after its initial debut, Ayecon is still one of the gold standards of iOS theming, and a great example of how to go about the process for those keen on creating themes. If you’re interested in giving it a try, then head over to Cydia’s BigBoss repo where it can be had for $2.99. If you’ve already purchased Ayecon for iOS 6, then Ayecon for iOS 7 is a free update. AURA looks stunning, wanted to let you know.

    • f1ght3r

It does, but $3 for a beta? No thanks!

      • Martin

It’s not going to be in beta forever..

      • Maxim∑

beta on icon packs basically means some popular icons are missing thats all

      • James Forbes

It’s not in beta anymore. Just bought it.

    • bgibson72

      Second that…aura is awesome.

  • blastingbigairs

    Pretty nice, pretty nice….

  • 4p0c4lyps3

Meh, never was a big fan of it. Never saw what was so desirable about it.

    • Diego Gastón Milano

Yep, I don’t like overwhelming levels of detail at this point. I take minimalism moving forward, so I’ll stick to FlatIcons.

  • kevin chang

the themes need a new UI update!!!!!!!! not only the homescreen!! 😀

    • Rick Kreuk

Whereas iOS 6 and below used bitmap images for UI elements like navigation bars and buttons, in iOS 7 they are basically just shapes with a gradient or blur applied to them via code. That explains why Ayecon does change the shape of the message bubbles, but can’t change the content of the bubble to the realistic style found in earlier versions. Until a way is found to let iOS 7 render bitmap UI again, we’re pretty much stuck with the flat design.

The dock isn’t themeable either but Surenix with the help of some developers found a way to make it work. My guess is give it a few months and hopefully it will be possible to theme more of the UI…

    • Damian W

Exactly, nothing is different here from iOS 7 except springboard

  • Andre Grey

i LOVE this theme…been waiting for it to drop for sooooo long…great review Jeff

  • fernando

can i get the ios 6 dock without the full ayecon ?

    • MHCsk

I’m pretty sure there is such jailbreak tweak in development. Not sure of the name though.

    • ✪ aidan harris ✪

You could probably change the Ayecon dock to an image of the iOS 6 dock assuming you can get your hands on it. I think Ayecon stores its dock here:

      • Screenshot of mac dock could do the trick.
        Shift+Command+4 then space bar

      • Ninja Banana

      • sure, if you can manage to get rid of the icons first…

      • There is no need, have you even tried?
Quartz makes screenshot of individual component possible. They were rendered as PDF. Screenshots even have transparency.
The only thing you need to do is make it shorter.

    • Yes, ClassicDock has just been released today on the BigBoss Repo for free in Cydia. It brings back the iOS 6 dock.

    • Eihab Khan

Install ClassicDock from the BigBoss repo

    • Fábio Mesquita

ClassicDock (ios 6 dock) is out and it’s amazing ;). It’s free on BigBoss repo.

  • Looks cool

  • Prasoon Singh

    This looks amazing!

  • Omar Wright

    just downloaded!

    • Ninja Banana

      Thanks for letting me know!

  • M 

I like Ayecon, but this just icons with little enhancements that can be made from tweaks + 9 wallpapers!
What happened to system-wide Ayecon? or other system-wide themes? 🙁

    • ✪ aidan harris ✪

      iOS 7 happened…

    • The formatting of a lot of the UI has changed within iOS 7, therefore it is a huge challenge to get iOS 7 themed throughout the whole system. Just gotta be patient for now while theme-makers can evaluate the file system and get everything working properly again.

      • Damian W

It should not cost 2 dollars

  • illK†Δ

When iOS 7 was introduced, I knew this theme would be done. Not that I don’t like it, but no longer looks good with the entire new “light” iOS 7 UI. Just not the same as iOS 6.

  • Jordan Carter

Never liked this theme even a little bit, don’t know what the fascination is about.

  • threespeak

Just scroll up again to the screenshots above, sit back and look at the screen as a whole… tbh there’s faaaaaaaaaaar too much going on at once with this theme. There’s no visual symmetry between the icons. The design mantra just seems to be “How much tiny detail can I cram into each individual app?”…this is without any consideration of flow and correlation between the other apps. One of the things iOS7 (as opposed to iOS6/Ayecon style) seems to get is this flow throughout the OS.

Skeu just isn’t my cup of tea any more :/ I prefer easy on the eyes, simple flat icons akin to the 7’s stock. Aura by iApex seems to hit the nail on the head for me. I’m gonna be using their theme exclusively this time around methinks.

    • Maxim∑

Apple has converted us to Anti-skeuomorphism

    • Ray V

Try Soft Remix. Looks amazing on both the iPad and iPhone.

  • Daishinkan

This is good but jaku is best

Jaku doesn’t have enough Cydia and AppStore icons themed. Even I have stopped using it now that Ayecon is out…

I have that installed and really like it

    • everydayghost

You have good taste in themes 😉
      I hear the designer’s a handsome devil!

      • Not____Nyce

        I see what u did there…

      • Armando Ruiz

If he was anymore handsome idownloadblogs server would crash!! Lol #nohomo

Aycon, Anique V2 and Aura are the best themes IMO.. I hate anything related with the iOS 7 style.. those crayola flat icons look horrible!

Woo! Thanks for all the hard work Surenix.

    • Surenix

      Thank you and you’re welcome.

  • Windy Joseph

Here it is AURA running on my phone, I tried AYECON it reminds me a little too much of iOS 6, maybe if it had come out when IOS 7 was released I would have love it (Personal opinion). One thing that actually awed me, is the amount of work these guys or ladies had put in this theme, honestly the most complete theme on cydia for iOS 7 right now, and I did not regret buying it. Great job!

  • Alex Miamorsch

Don’t like it. Anymore. But i really appreciate Surenix’ hard work for the iOS 7 Update…thanks though…

  • Burge

Download it tried it uninstalled it. Sorry but it’s time has been and gone..

  • Mads Teland

I think this is a beta, because signal bars sometimes makes the orginial appear again 😉

    • Maxim∑

That might have been on purpose because its in his screenshots not sure though

    • Surenix

This is a bug with WinterBoard not clearing proper cache files. I hope there’s an update to fix this as well.

      • Xinan

Is there a way which I can clear it myself, as a temporary fix?

      • The directions for clearing the cache for the status bar are up in the article under “Troubleshooting”. It worked for me for the most part, though the signal bars don’t change on the lock screen for me.

      • Mads Teland

The answer for my problem is just only on lockscreen 😉

      • Same here, and it actually really bugs me lol.

      • Xinan

And I noticed that the dock and badges are also unchanged, is it a compatibility issue with 7.1b3?

      • Mads Teland

Because statusbar size and font is different on lockscreen to statusbar on home screen, like it separated.

  • Maxim∑

doesn’t look right on iOS 7 I guess the people criticizing Aura were wrong

  • Alberto Espinal

I’d rather have Aura it is more IOS 7ish, i thought the author of

  • Mads Teland

I think it’s a beta, because the signal bars shows sometimes original signal bars like on the lockscreen after removed files on UIStatusbar. So this is a good beginning to be stable theme.

  • alexanderlyd

what tweak do you have to change the status bars? thanks

    • Ummmm…it’s part of the ayecon theme. Just gotta clear the cache and respring and you should be good to go.

  • Alain Vasquez

    Idk…… Same stuff

  • Tobias Ruano

    I prefer Zanilla.

  • Thiago Vaccaro

Guys, aura is also available in Cydia now

  • Thiago Vaccaro

    I really like this one…

    • Jonathan

It’s my theme as well. 🙂 With a little Bigify size reduction, and some awesome iWidgets, I’ve got a perfect iPod. Oh, try the green grass wallpaper. It looks awesome with it.

      • Thiago Vaccaro

Thanks for the tip, gonna try it 😉

    • What theme is this?

      • Jonathan

        Soft Remix.

      • Thanks, I’m trying it out right now and I love it. I still personally prefer Solstice, though.

      • Jonathan

Soft Remix is my favorite. I’m extremely picky when it comes to themes. The only 2 I’ve ever found that I like is Soft Remix, and Glasklart.

      • Thiago Vaccaro

      • Thanks

  • Thiago Vaccaro

I actually prefer downloading the wallpapers instead of the theme itself

  • Merman123

Just installed… It’s… Ugly :(. I was a big fan of ayecon. Oh well, guess it’s one of those “good while it lasted” things.

  • ✪ aidan harris ✪

Great theme by Surenix that will hopefully only get better again as time goes in. I too had an issue with the status bar but deleting the caches as suggested above did the trick except I still have the old signal bars (or should I say circles) on the lockscreen. Is this a bug?

  • Right now, I’ve got Ayecon (iOS 7) installed, using the status bar and messages parts, and using Solstice as the icon theme. Looks amazing 🙂

  • Kevin Grayson

What about Ayecon for the iPad?!!

  • David Buenrostro

I’ve been anticipating Ayecon being updated for iOS 7 since I used the first betas. But now installing it after all this time it makes me a little sad to say that as much as I loved it in the iOS 6 days, it’s legacy will remain there for me. Using it now on iOS 7 with all the system-wide changes just doesn’t feel right. Don’t get me wrong, Ayecon is beautiful and the detail is amazing, but i think the design times have changed (at least iOS wise). I hate to be one of those jerks to say this but Ayecon had its peak in iOS 6 and now it feels like the spotlight will be on Aura for iOS 7, and it deserves it. So far it seems it’s as good at simplistic design as Ayecon was at skeuomorphism in its day.

  • Chris Gilmore

He should have given in to the iOS 7 type theme. This is just dumb looking. Glad I didn’t waste my money on it. You can’t fight an entire iOS by just making icons different. Oh well.

  • dazzw

    looks outdated…

  • Joey

As much as I REALLY like this theme on iOS 6 is just doesn’t have the same appeal since I installed it on iOS 7. I think there should have been an iOS 7 style Ayecon as well.

  • Alex Marwaha

anyone know when auxo 2 is coming out?

  • Steve Zou

Well, don’t fit that well all together.
PS, why keep dat wallpaper with a fly? It’s horrible.

  • Joey

Okay. This is a bit better. Flat effect of iOS 7 with the old Dock.

    • on3simpleclick

What is the tweak to get the old dock?

      • Joey

It’s not a tweak. It’s Ayecon. I just enabled the dock portion only and used the Solstice theme instead.

      • Wai Kang Lin

        Install classicdock from bigboss repo:)

  • Steve Zou

Still don’t have a winner theme for iOS 7

Personally I wish Ayecon’s icons would be redesigned

  • Xinan

  • Inseltraeumer

As someone who’s never been into theming, this makes me want to try it. How’s battery life affected with such a theme?

    • 123bob

      Battery life is good

  • Blip dude

Forgive me because I know I will sound like a crybaby, and be slightly off topic, but what a coincidence, I can’t have both the Ayecon and Aura themes installed because of some conflict for some wallpapers that I won’t be using from either theme. I even tried deleting them from iFile with reboot and still nothing!!! Either way, Aura is clearly not being friendly (I’m aware it is in beta), or clearly Aura was not meant for iOS 6, which means I just spent $3 on theme I won’t be able to use unless I update.

P.S. These are the errors I get on cydia “Trying to overwrite ‘/Library/Wallpaper/iPhone/299.thumbnail@2x.png’, which is also in package com.modmyi.aura

    Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)”
