Popular cloud storage service Box has released a big update for its iOS client today, bringing the app to version 3.0. The update includes an all-new UI design, real-time search for files and within files, and a number of other improvements.

As for the redesign, Box says it has completely re-written the app from the ground-up with things like speed and easier navigation in mind. In version 3.0, documents render faster, photos load quicker, and sharing is much less painful…

Here are the release notes for 3.0:

・Completely re-written app!
・New navigation and redesigned UI
・New preview experience for documents, photos and videos
・Faster document rendering and photo loading
・Real-time search (for files and within files)
・Better sharing and controls
・AirPrint, Bookmarks, and savings videos from Box to your library coming in future releases

And here’s a promo clip for the redesign:

To sweeten the deal, Box says it’s giving out 50GB of free, lifetime storage space to anyone who downloads the new app within the next 30 days. That’s 5 times the amount of space it typically gives users, and 25 times what Dropbox offers for free.

Current Box users should be happy about today’s big update, and the free 50GB offer should be enough to entice new users to check it out. If you’re looking for it, you can find the Box app in the App Store, for both the iPhone and iPad, for free.

Just downloaded it, and I must say, having 50GB on the cloud is nice. I use Dropbox religiously, but I only have about 7GB of storage. This does wonders.

    • Capirexz

Copy is better cloud. google it.

    • Jacob S

IMO, Box’s 50gb storage is useless unless you stick to your mobile device to do everything! They do not support sync/upload from mac/pc with free accounts. I love dropbox and I will stick to it and I have 56gb storage with Dropbox that I received via some promotion in the past which I don’t remember now :P

      • Adham

It does support sync/upload from computers with free accounts. What the sync app does not support which is extremely annoying is symlinks.

  • Spilled Ink Media

Maths is wrong. 10 times what Dropbox offers for free, not 25.

    • Smuys

Nope, they’re right, dropbox only gives you 2gb of space out of the box.

    • Om

No, Dropbox offers 2GB of storage. That’s 2X25 which equals 50. You’re wrong.

      • marcus1324

Dropbox offers 5GB of storage out of the box it’s not 2GB

      • Jacob S

dropbox only gives 2gb to begin with

      • Spilled Ink Media

When I signed up it was 5gb if you downloaded the desktop app. You also got bonus storage added for referring friends. It’s sad if they are offering only 2gigs now because that’s laughable in today’s storage terms.

      • Jacob S

I have had a promotion code as well when I signed up. I have 50gig + 6gig earned with references, so I have 56gb storage with dropbox without any file size limit like box’s 250mb/file. I like dropbox better, even if I have to pay in the future I will stick to DB as it is widely and easily integrated in mobile/tablet/desktop platforms.

      • marcus1324

        When did that change?

    • Ted Forbes

Dropbox give 500MB when you sign up, thats half of 1GB, so you are both are wrong!

      • Jacob S

You are absolutely wrong, currently dropbox gives 2gb upon signup.

      • Ted Forbes

Maybe we both should sign up again to see who is wrong. Lol!!!

      • Jacob S

Well, I don’t have to :) Here is the extracts from the Terms and Conditions page of Dropbox:

        “Free Accounts

Dropbox allows you to store up to 2 GB free of charge.
Dropbox reserves the right to terminate Free Accounts at any time, with or without notice. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, if a Free Account is inactive for ninety (90) days, then Dropbox may delete any or all of Your Files without providing additional notice.”

      • John

yep. your right, just joined and gave me 2GB

    • hack_nug

I have 48GB on Dropbox for free, so it’s like 1.04166666667 times what Dropbox gave me.

Remember Box is NOT giving 50GB to everyone, only iOS users. So you can’t compare this number with the one that Dropbox gives to everyone. Box gives 10GB and Dropbox 2GB (at least on Spain). You CAN compare this two.

  • Ben Thorne

    50GB? Sign me up!

  • Jonathan

What if I made 20 accounts? xD

    • Modest

Yeah, I know few people who made more than 2 accounts when they had this promotion last time.

  • Vaidotas

You should mention, that they have 250mb max file size limit which makes these 50gb almost useless

    • pegger1

It’s still just as useful. You just don’t know what you’re doing.

    • Giel Konink

Do you have so much file biger then 250 ? then use winrar en break them down ?

      • Stefano

That just may work depending if it allows rar uploads

      • Giel Konink

Yes it can sync RAR :D i just tested

      • Stefano

        Nice, thanks for the confirmation!

    • Jfk

You should try yunio, the app offers 1 tb of free storage

  • Rowan09

Tried Box but it’s only useful when transferring small files. I got the 50GB on an earlier promotion as well. If they get rid of the file transfer limit they will give competition with Dropbox.

    • Dan

yeah I agree, signed up for this just in case I need it down the road, but dropbox is superior imo (although eventually I’ll lose my 50GB of dropbox space)

      • Rowan09

I did too since it was 50Gb for free but after finding out they couldn’t do videos I stopped using it. Flickr is great for pictures and offers the most space but I hate the UI. I got 50GB for free with Dropbox after signing up with my Note 2.

      • Dan

Yeah same here (Note 2). The 50gb is only for two years though I think. One year left for me. Box may be an option since Dropbox is too expensive. If I get this damn thing to work on my iPad air :(

      • Rowan09

So what happens after the 2 years?

      • Dan

You lose it. goes back to normal

      • felixtaf

I have the 48GB promotion from Note 2 for dropbox. I have a question. What will happen to the files after the promotion time?

      • Dan

If I recall correctly. Read it a year ago. They give you time to get your stuff but you can’t upload anything new.

      • Rowan09

I understand that but what happens to the files? Mega also gives 50GB for free and they include video uploads as well.

      • Dan

If I recall correctly. Read it a year ago. They give you time to get your stuff but you can’t upload anything new until you get within your limit

      • felixtaf

Mega is good.. But it doesnt have an iPad app or desktop client at the moment…

      • Dan

yeah, imo the desktop client is the whole point.
Google drive isn’t bad either, almost as good as dropbox, I’ve got a free 25 GB with them.

      • felixtaf

I checked on Mega website and they say desktop client is coming soon. Tried an upload yesterday via browser. Its bad since my upload speed is low and have to keep the webpage open.

I have 25GB google drive too but 6GB gone in mail alone. Also have account in Dropbox, Asus Webstorage, Skydrive, Pogoplug, Mega and Box..

Using Dropbox and Drive mostly… To me desktop and iPad client is important because I work on them.

      • Raanor

I haven’t seen anyone else mention the answer to this question. After 2 years is past they will not just delete your files on you; your capacity will revert back to your original allotted amount and you won’t be able to add any new files until you’ve deleted enough to be under your allowed limit.

      • Rowan09

        Oh ok thank you.

  • Omid Lotfi

Seem to be only getting 10GB of storage, what’s the issue????

    • Terry Cooke

Me too!!!, think an email to support might be in order!

    • Terry Cooke

just sent them an email and then noticed that there was an update in the app store, i have now signed in to the new app and got 50GB. Hope this helps

      • Omid Lotfi

I didn’t know about box until this post so I just downloaded it and signed up. Not having any luck so far. Anyway thanks buddy

      • Kuso26

You will need to sign in from iphone or ipad app (not sure others) then you will receive from them say you got 50GB free storage. Hope it helps.

    • Skilachi

      upgrade the app in AppStore

  • Furany

how about mega? it also offers you 50gb and it’s faster than dropbox

    • Rowan09

Does it do video as well? I wish Flickr did video because they give the most space.

      • Jeff Ramirez

        Yes it does allow video.

      • Rowan09

        Thanks I downloaded the file.

      • Furany

yes it does, also its using file encryption

  • Dan

Impressive… Crashes on startup on my iPad air… Least I got my 50gb. I’ll figure out the problem later.

    • felixtaf

Working fine on mine. I got the same 50GB promotion last year. Using it on iPad air without any issues… You can try a reinstall…

      • Dan

Yeah I did. Still crashes, weird.

      • felixtaf

I dont think its a compayibility issue… May be minor glitch…
I think you need to signup for the 50gb (hope u did that). Cant think of any solution, wrking fine for me (I did a reinstall too).

  • Skoven

250MB file size limit and the fact that it will keep folders in the cloud, even when you delete them locally, makes box pretty useless, in my opinion.
Does anyone know of any other PROPER sync services that offers the same amount of storage (even higher perhaps)? I am already using DropBox, SkyDrive and Copy.

    • Jackie Zhao

      Mega upload

      • Skoven

Thank you. Hopefully their sync client will be ready soon…

    • burlow

I put some adwords on google for dropbox with my referral link, and i now have over 20GB free. I think I paid $10 in ads.

  • iOS for life

    Just got it! Crazy good!

  • Matt

Anyone know if box does auto photo sync?

  • Ted Forbes

Thanks Box I will migrate from Dropbox to Box. I have 16GB of Dropbox space, but its background photo and video uploading and inbox file editing sucks. Dropbox have some catching up to do.

    • Rowan09

Box doesn’t do video unless it’s under 250mb, which is basically useless.

  • Rico Haze

It really doesn’t make a difference if they give you 1000gbs. You can’t upload anything over 250mb which makes this completely useless.

  • n0ahcruz3

Mega is better it also offers 50GB storage and it was made by Kim Dotcom so it is NSA proof

  • Nicolas Baillie

sick I have 350 GB on their cloud now

  • diggitydang

I signed up for a trial previously, and now it won’t let me upgrade to this promotion…. Booooo, stuck at 10GB.

  • iRy757

Wow, I got 50GB of free Box storage for being in the first 50 people to arrive at a HP training event for work… Now I don’t feel as special.

  • Khalid Tahhan

Pogoplug is the best out there for videos. After uploading it can stream videos to you so no waiting for downloads. You can still also download the original file if you wish too. $50 per year for unlimited storage and you can back up from your pc all your files or stream them from your pc (streaming from pc you have to buy a pc app for a one off payment of $25 if u recall right).

  • Preben Faarkrog Hansen

Mine crashes when i try to import photo, from my photo album, every time ?

  • Max

    THANK YOU!! So epic!!

  • Wai Kang Lin

Try Copy, you get 5GB free initially and 5GB if you refered to another email to sign it up.

    • Raanor

Was just on their site and it’s actually 15gb initially on sign up. *thumbs up*

  • Aaron de Silva

I already had 50GB Storage. Anyone knows if dowbloading this gives u another 50?

    • Raanor

I also got the free 50GB of space just for signing up; I dl’d the app from the store again (I don’t think it was a fresh install, however I had to sign in as if I never had, the app may have just been updated). I did not recieve an additional 50GB on top of my current 50GB. Waited about 10 mins hoping I’d see the space.

If anyone else could confirm whether they allow you to stack the data, although I highly doubt that’s the case, that would be nice.

  • Kurt Wijckmans

I don’t seem to find a program to install on my Mac in order to get the sync. OK, you can install Box for Mac, but you’ll have to upgrade to the business solution. I’m a big fan of Dropbox, and if Box doesn’t offer a free mac client, I will stay a big Dropbox fan…

  • D1squs

I’ve downloaded the app but it shows that i only have 2.6gig? So how can i claim the 50gb? Tnx

  • Guest

IMO, Box’s 50gb storage is useless unless you stick to your mobile device to do everything! They do not support sync/upload from mac/pc with free accounts. I love dropbox and I will stick to it.

  • Dimebag

Box sucks. Can’t sync folders for free. Uninstalled it. I would recommend not using it, it’s a fake cloud service.

  • Bill Ennis

I’m just glad to see the 50GB upgrade is for current users as well :-)
