iPad mini 2 (Retina, Personal Pickup)

Apple’s iPad mini with Retina display is finally here and available via online orders, with shipping or pickup at the company’s brick-and-mortar outlets. In fact, the new iPads are already being featured prominently on the online Apple Store.

Wasting no time whatsoever, Apple’s web store is now pitching both new iPads as perfect holiday gifts, even with the initially severely constrained supplies of Retina iPad minis.

With that in mind, today I want to focus on a Retina successor to Apple’s best-selling tablet, the iPad mini. Do you think you’ll be getting an iPad mini with Retina display this coming holidays? The poll is right past the fold so cast your vote and meet us in comments. Should be fun!

As you know, the iPad Air and Retina iPad mini are essentially identical specs-wise, sans the latter’s smaller form factor and a marginally slower A7 chip clocked at 1.29GHz versus 1.39GHz for the iPad Air and 1.3GHz for the iPhone 5s.

While the slight difference in clock frequencies is negligible, those coming from the original iPad are bound to experience a fivefold jump in performance, courtesy of the Apple-designed 64-bit A7 silicon.

Anyways, cast your vote now.

The iPad mini with Retina display is initially available the United States, Australia, China, Hong Kong (Wi-Fi model only), Japan, New Zealand and Singapore, with other countries to follow in the coming weeks. The gizmo comes in silver and space grey, in Wi-Fi-only or Wi-Fi + Cellular variants and four storage tiers each.

The 16/32/64/128GB Wi-Fi models are $399/$499/$599/$699 (a $130 extra to go cellular). Apple is also selling last year’s original iPad mini, now discounted from $329 down to $299 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model ($429 for its cellular counterpart).

Christmas 2013 (iPad Air, iPad mini Retina 001)

Needless to say, Tim Cook & Co. will happily sell you one of the $39 polyurethane Smart Covers, available for both the original and Retina iPad mini in blue, green, pink, yellow, black and (RED). If you’re more of an aniline-dyed leather type of guy, the price goes up to $69 and finishes change to yellow, beige, blue, brown, black and (RED).

If it means anything to you, The Loop’s Jim Dalrymple called the Retina iPad mini a no-compromise device, writing in his quick review that “there’s nothing bad to say about the Retina iPad mini”. Surely it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Apple’s smaller iPad, for the time being, is going to remain its best-selling iPad model.

You may want to check out our related poll that tested respondents’ preference toward the iPad Air. And while we’re at it, how about taking a look at some of the amusing and interesting polls in iDB’s archive?

So, what did you vote in the poll?

Hopefully, you won’t mind sharing your thought process with fellow readers in comments.

Need the “i recently bought the iPad Air” answer :/

    • Well, I wanted to keep it simple to get accurate results so those who have already bought another device shouldn’t vote 😀

  • Yes. As a matter of fact, I ordered one this morning at midnight. I also ordered one for pickup a few minutes ago. Once I pick it up (hopefully later tonight), I will cancel my previous order 🙂

    For me it’s a gray 16GB wi-fi model.

    • rubeN

i should have never ordered online. My local stores are showing in stock. Im pissed, broh 😀

      • Go get it in store and cancel your online order, just like I’m going to do. Apple doesn’t charge your credit card until it ships the item. This means if you go pick one up today and cancel your online order, your credit card will only be charged for the one purchase you made today. The other order will be cancelled.

      • rubeN

The thing is it’s showing preparing for shipping and you can’t cancel the order now.

      • My card was already charged so I don’t think that’s right. It’s a pending charge anyway.

    • Cesar D

Can you gift me the other if you don’t cancel it? Come here to mexico and I will host you in my house 😀

  • Dave

Please add I don’t have money.

    • rockdude094

      Lmfao – I really did

  • I got mine a few hours ago in Paris 😉 Cuz’ I’m from Paris.
I’m just a bit disappointed that the screen is not laminated to the panel; there is an air gap…

  • Alex Marwaha

You guys make the “yes” answer so extreme.

  • Bought one for my Mom for Christmas 🙂

  • quitcherbichinn

Picked up a 128gb space gray wifi after school. To ship it was a 5-7 day wait but they had one at the Apple store an hour away. I almost bought an iPad Air yesterday…it’s surprisingly light..especially compared to my iPad 3 (which was a total hog). I just love the size of the mini more than the Air so I’m happy I waited!!

  • ɑղժɾҽա

No, I already got an iPad Air.

  • Tony

Already have the Mini don’t see a reason to upgrade just yet. I’ll get the next one, I would have got one if the price wasn’t so high.

    • mav3rick

Jacked up price and idiotic blinding look from neonOS for this new Mini. Original one can still be found at reasonable price and if lucky still on eye candy iOS 6.

  • Yeah, but not for me, I’ll buy one for Christmas for my little sister though.

  • Joseph A. Ahmad

I would love to buy one, I may just stick with my iPad mini until December though, and then go for it — I’m waiting for the supply to come into my local store. I went this morning and was turned away unfortunately. 🙁

  • PereZ!

What if I said I still have my iPad 2 and it Still works great.

  • Jonathan

I’m typing comment on the mini and I really love it. It’s been a long time coming and definitely recommend it!

  • Stefano

Using it right now!!! So happy with it

  • No because it’s overpriced. Maybe in a year.

    • It’s 100% the same Hardware as the iPhone 5s…

    • felixtaf

iPad mini was way overpriced. iPad mini 2 is priced right, when compared to iPad air or any other iPad. Mini 2 is 5 times better than the original mini and almost same as the iPad air (except screen size).

  • iKing_5

    For $400??? Absolutely not…

  • hellac00l

Got it today, looked online this morning and found 3 stores in my area that had it in available for in store pick up. This is the tablet I’ve been waiting for! It fits right in my hands and is the perfect size for carrying around. Nice move by Apple for the stealth release.

  • Chris

Don’t know yet. I already have the 5s and a mid 2013 MacBook Air, so I don’t know if having the iPad Mini would be worth slotting between those two.

  • n0ahcruz3

Next year when price goes down. 😛

  • blastingbigairs

Nope, my Jailbroken iPad 3 does me just fine.

  • lanceuppercut47

Ordered a 32gb 3G space grey with a red smart cover, going to pair that with a black rear shell of some kind (or maybe no rear shell at all)

  • Christian Mejía

Wtf happened to the 320 price?!?!?! Whoa

  • Jacque Miller

Probably not I just bought the iPhone 5s and the new MacBook Pro. I’ll wait until next year hopefully they will add touch ID to it!

  • hkgsulphate

still happy with my gen 1!

  • Barry

Can’t I pick for a simple yes without having to agee that the iPad is THE best tablet out there? 😛

  • Truffol

This poll demonstrates perfectly why Apple went low-key with the iPad Mini Retina launch yesterday…there’s no way they can hold a Mini for everyone!

  • Valinor

I didnt know what to buy, Ipad Air or Ipad mini retina.

Air to expensive, could get mini retina with 32gb for same price.
Also me wanting 4g but 120 euros extra was crazy 🙁
    I was lost 🙁
BUT THEN THERE WAS A SIGN :O
Ipad mini retina 64gb with 4g Silver for only 559 euro!!!! (normal price 689 euro)
Yepppppp I bought one at 130 euro discount xD

(was actually a pricing error but thanks to some awesome consumer laws which tell them that if the pricing error is “believable” for the consumer, they still have to deliver for that price. And 100 euro discount on a tablet is “believable” 😛 The other 30 euro discount was due to a coupon)

  • lol, you guys make the answers so fanboy/hater extreme.…
