J.D. Power and Associates is an American-based marketing information services firm that’s highly regarded for its research on customer satisfaction. Apple loves to quote their surveys, and does so at media events and on earnings calls.

But this is one report Tim Cook and company are probably not going to be mentioning. In J.D. Power’s latest tablet customer satisfaction survey, Apple was bested by Samsung on overall satisfaction and in particular areas like device cost…

Here’s the breakdown (via MacRumors):

jdpowertabletAnd additional context from the press release:

“Whether consumers prefer the online channel for competitive pricing compared with the tactile retail store experience, effectively matching owner needs with the appropriate tablet model during the purchase process goes a long way in positively influencing overall satisfaction,” said Kirk Parsons, senior director of telecommunications services at J.D. Power.

The 2013 U.S. Tablet Satisfaction Study–Volume 2 is based on experiences evaluated by 3,375 tablet owners who have owned their current device for less than one year. The study was fielded between March and August 2013. The study measures satisfaction across five key factors (in order of importance): performance (26%); ease of operation (22%); styling and design (19%); features (17%); and cost (16%).”

Apple finished just 2 points behind Samsung with a score of 833, faring unsurprisingly well in categories like ease of operation and performance. Likewise, it’s not surprising to see that Samsung’s tablet offerings received high scores in cost.

Cost is a major driving factor for purchases in all industries, not just consumer electronics. And at the time this survey was taken, Apple’s cheapest tablet was the iPad mini, which started at $329. Samsung’s tablet line, however, starts at $169.

Still, the fact of the matter is Apple got beat, and it’ll be interesting to see what the numbers look like in 6 months. The company just unveiled a redesigned iPad Air, an iPad mini with Retina display, and it dropped the entry-level price to $299.

What do you make of all of this?

  • TesticularFortitude

    In areas of cost?

  • Dan

    -.-

  • smtp25

Beaten yes but only by the slimmest of points. Bragging rights sure, significance? Little to none

    • TesticularFortitude

“Seems strange, given that the iPad scored top marks in every single category other than cost, and Samsung didn’t score top marks in any category, including cost.”

      I agree!!

    • gittlopctbi

But if Apple had won by the same margin, ya all would be bragging, right?

      • smtp25

        Nope don’t really care.

  • Hwang Lee

I have a Nexus 7 and I love it, but iPads are way better than Galaxy Tabs. Just my opinion.

    • Kurt

Galaxy Tabs are not the premium tablets. Galaxy Notes are the premium tablets and are much better than the iPad. But with tablets, it’s all about apps, so I’ll deal with not having as good a device as long as I have the appstore and a great app experience

  • Cameron Chao

This is a joke right? i may be an apple fanboy, but i can accept the views on how customer satisfaction may be higher on samsungs side in the smartphone category, but tablet? Must be a joke.

  • Chris Holden

i call bs on this one, how much did u pay them samsung?

    • Yujin

Shhhh this is a secret bitch!

  • thetomthebomb

It was 835 to 833 in the chart hahaha. They should have polled for 5 more min. I’m sure the results would have been the reverse lol

  • Yujin

Hey I got a free tablet from some Chinese company why isn’t it there? I google it an it actually cost $80 lol. So how about winning where is matters the most? Like customer service, usage, resell value?

  • thetomthebomb

Whoa found a weird bug. This is supposed to be only in landscape!

  • Samsung only won in the price category, how this is possible?

    • gittlopctbi

Except Samsung scored high in features, design, and overall satisfaction. Peace back at ya.

      • Samsung scored in design too? So that’s one more point to Apple.

      • gittlopctbi

No, your point as written was people only like Samsung for price and not quality. Your point stated nothing about which company scored higher. So I just made the point that Samsung’s customers liked its features and design.

      • The only thing that got 5 stars was the price.
So yes, that’s the only feature they like the most.

iPad got 5 stars on everything, less the price. Now figure, who’s the best.

      • gittlopctbi

Oh, whatever…your point was not about what is “the best.” Apple clearly outdid Samsung in all but one category in that. Your point was what do *Samsung* customers like about their device. You used the word “only.” As in only the price. Even though price was the lone 5 star category, it is clear that Samsung owners like other things about their devices, too. So to say that the “only” thing they like about their product is the price is ridiculous. You cannot even understand your own comments. Not worth discussing with you. Peace out.

      • Off course when I said that, i was comparing against apple products. because I always smile when some people say that samsung products are better than apple ones. At the end, we see why they prefer them…its all about money and costs.. not about quality on top of everything. the area where apple wins.

  • Hahaha, for the past 9 year Apple was the biggest bidder, now Samsung has made a bigger deal with them. It’s all a marketing gimmick until at least one of my iPhone using friends have taken a part in these so-called “customer satisfaction” surveys.

  • NEWYORKMINUTE10

I’m buying an iPad Air 64GB WiFi + 3G tomorrow. Hope they have in stock. Does anyone have any good reason why I should go for the 128GB?

    • Dan

double the space? what other reason is there

      • NEWYORKMINUTE10

Omg I can’t understand the apple fanboys, who the f**k would down vote my comment? F**k u whoever did that.

That’s no good reason, 64 Gb is it

      • Dan

no clue who downvoted but you need to relax… anyway storage is storage, obviously it depends how much you need and what you use it for, pretty much the only reason to get 128 GB.

  • Taf Khan

Samsung cannot be trusted, we know all about Samsung paying people.

Samsung win on price sure I accept that but then again cheap tat should always cost less, would they score more than Apple on build quality?

The best comparison of the devices is to use both then score.

The fact that Apple sell more iPads tells a story in itself. Tut tut.

    • But neither can Apple; we all know they lied about not having access to your iMessages.

Definitely can’t compare Apple device quality to Samsung’s cheapo plastic. However, neither can you compare Samsung tablet features to Apple’s limited functionality tablet, yet, we still see Apple has the top rank there…it’s all a marketing gimmick and shouldn’t be the basis of which device you buy.

      • BoardDWorld

Limited, in what view do you find the Samsung tab less limited in features?

      • – Runs Android, so, all those functions/tweaks people jailbreak for are officially possible
        – Officially has the ability to manage files from any USB drive
        – Built-in IR blaster to control your standard entertainment system; no need for neither expensive internet-connected entertainment system nor a separate wifi-to-IR blaster
        – It has palm rejection, so, don’t need some crazy priced stylus just to take notes like you would normally do on paper. Did I mention that the pen has a fine tip like a normal ball point pen instead of those bulky, rubber heads?
        .
        .
        .
        And so on.

      • Taf Khan

Agree in that this should never be the basis for buying a device. If I knew little about either then I would use both and then decide..

  • n0ahcruz3

Haha sweet! Samsung must be doing something right.

  • Cameron Chao

So with Apple you’re basically paying for the best. and i find putting samsung in the physical design section quite stupid, since its basically a rip off Apple.

    • tikoy@yaoo.cm.ph

      hai

  • appl3h4ck3r

Wow a whole $30 for the mini’s price. Woop-di-doo. It’s still more expensive than any android device just bcuz the apple logo is on it. It does essentially the same crap as any normal tablet. The only major difference is UI. That’s why I hate apple bcuz they think that their products are so innovative. Android has been doing what Apple is doin for years. Everyone just
Migrates towards Apple bcuz “they aren’t as succeptible to viruses” and are “easier to use.” Granted, I love my iPhone 5, but I’ve used Android as well and love it’s look and feel and the setup. I keep my iPhone for jailbreak 😉 which is why I follow iDB!

    • Dan

I agree, although the build quality and resale value is superior.

  • BoardDWorld

I was about to rant why Cody didn’t use this image. This is insane. Does a Daewoo rank better than a Mercedes? If price has such a bearing on the score they should include all the cheap no brand tablets. I’m sorry but JD Powers lost the plot…

    • coLin

Let’s all agree that the prices are a little too high, and let’s encourage that somehow (J.D Powers had a very good strategy putting them just 2 points below – for a reason)

    • gittlopctbi

So…Apple should just be the only one in its category and just win by default? OK, that’s fine, I have no problem with that. But just understand that’s what you are saying, correct?

And of course not, Daewoo would not rank better than a Mercedes. For one thing, Daewoo doesn’t even appear on any list of JD Powers. Another thing is that its quality isn’t even in the same ballpark. I would say that Samsung’s quality is competitively in the same ballpark.

    • iOops

Seems as though JD was paid off. Apple scored a solid 5 on all categories, except price (Mercedes vs Volvo). Samsung scored less than stellar marks on all categories, other than price (read cheap crap).. Why on this earth did Samsung win?

    • mav3rick

Yeah, good logic. A basic tech device used and repurchased yearly or often by everyone these days as a tablet or a phone compares with a car.

  • Sean Cua

    Fake. HAHA

  • coLin

Apple should drop the price on iPads, especially because they are being used in educational purposes more and more. They are making a lot of money anyways 😉

    • mav3rick

If that day will come it will be one of their days Blackberry is going through now…

  • Alexander Reimann

Yup, basically Apple has the BEST tablet, and Samsung has the “best” of the cheaper tablets…

  • realityisjustadream

    Samsung ‘bests’ Apple?

  • gittlopctbi

In the end, this survey really doesn’t mean very much. First of all, it seems that because of the slim margins between Samsung and Apple, it would fall within a margin of error for sampling. It’s a toss up. Second, surveys MIGHT drive potential customers to look at it, but will not determine whether a customer will actually buy it or not. Again, it just boils down to one’s budget and how the device is going to be used. Obviously, there are people who feel that Samsung and Apple make great products. And that’s OK by me.
