A one-of-a-kind Mac Pro is scheduled to go up for auction by Sotheby’s next month. Designed by Apple senior vice president of design Jony Ive and friend Marc Newson, the red, aluminum-clad Mac is expected to sell for as much as $60,000.

The two designers have teamed up on a number of other one-off products for Sotheby’s upcoming benefit. And the proceeds from these and other items will go to Product (RED), a long-time Apple partner that fights AIDS and other diseases…

Beyond the red paint, the machine should look fairly familiar. It features the same cylindrical design as this year’s big Mac Pro model, which will go on sale in December starting at $2,999. Sotheby’s estimates this one will go for $40k to $60k.

At that price, we’d hope the specs would be maxed out on this thing, giving it 12-core Xeon E5 processors, AMD FirePro D700 GPUs, 64 GB of memory, and 1TB of storage. But I guess if you’re paying $60k for a computer, performance is trivial.

Some of Jony and Marc’s other one-off creations include a Leica M camera, an anodized aluminum desk, and a pair of solid rose gold EarPods. All of these items are set to be auctioned off on Saturday November 23rd, at an event in New York.

They say ; we have beautifull iphone cases in 5 colors ..and also product red …….; we have new smart covers for the iPad with 5 colors ..and product red ……; we have a brand new designed Mac Pro … and again product red …… The point is that they highlight it like they invented the red color ?! Wtf?!

      • mrloko

Product RED is for AIDS charity bro..thats why they advertise it specially so that people come to know about it more and buy it ..which will help others…

I really like the red and like the design. But there’s no denying it looks like typical trash cans for your bathroom next to the toilet.

      • Pixel Perfect

When I talk about the “New Mac Pro” I can never avoid mentioning the words “trash” and “can”

  • Free advice.

Just done painting my lamps. Surprising that they were black but now red. Advise to you all, grab the red deco paint and paint your black mac :D!

  • SpaceHash

Why Apple logo is not in front? It could have made a better impression :(

  • Dan

Looks like it would go perfectly with my Kitchenaid Mixer.

    (yes I cook)

  • slikmystar

I swear that first pic of the mac pro reminds me of a small dustbin

  • trumpet444

Would “design” be the right word? Looks like they just picked a color and called it a day

  • n0ahcruz3

Looks like a glorified trash bin. Ive should’ve designed it elongated cube with round corners.

You’ve got a point there. It looks nice but it does look as if all they have done is paint it red. At least the money is going to a good cause though…

      • n0ahcruz3

Im thinking of buying a mac pro send it to Anostyle make it red then sell it at ebay for 5k! Lol

    Not enough money

  • immovableobject

It’s not red paint, it’s red anodization, just like the black anodization used on the stock product. Given the extremely tight machining tolerances Apple uses, if a layer of paint had been applied, the parts couldn’t be fitted together again. Anodization is an chemical process that infuses the color into the aluminum and toughens its exterior. The colored finish will retain a beautiful metallic sheen.

One could probably find a metal plating shop that would strip the black anodization off and reapply the color of your choice for a lot less than $60,000, provided that you don’t mind completely disassembling your Mac and voiding your warrantee.

Like the other one-off designs by Jony and Marc, this is a “status” product for the filthy rich high bidder to show off his/her generosity in support of a good cause.
