What if I told you that there was a device you could buy that would give you LTE Internet access for your iPhone, iPad and up to 8 other devices without you having to pay a monthly fee? Well there is, and it’s called the Spot by FreedomPop.

You’ve probably heard of FreedomPop before—it’s the crazy startup backed by Skype founder Niklas Zennstrom that offers free Internet to folks who buy its devices. And for a limited time, you can get their LTE HotSpot at a great discount…

First, let’s talk a little about the device itself. The Freedom Spot MiFi 500 is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, and can support up to 10 mobile devices at a time. And as far as speed goes, it’s capable of up to 25mbps (download).

Top features:

  • Compact Device – Take it anywhere you go
  • Connect 10 Devices Via WiFi – Including smartphones, laptops, and tablets
  • Go Unplugged – Battery life of 10+ hours
  • GPS – Over Wi-Fi
  • Intuitive Navigation Keys
  • Bright OLED Display
  • Works on Sprint’s Nationwide 4G LTE (not 4G WiMAX) and 3G Network

And now for the other half of the equation: the service. The free Internet included with the device gives you 500MB per month of data. I know that’s not very much, but you can earn unlimited data by completing offers and referring friends.

More details:

  • Free Data – With this promotion you get 2GB 4G LTE Data FREE for the first month, then 500MB FREE every month after that, no questions asked
  • Premier Plan Access – For one year, FreedomPop Premier let’s you rollover your your unused data each month, secure all your devices from online threats and more!
  • Social Broadband – Get 500MB of additional 100% FREE monthly data when you refer your friends
  • Earn Unlimited Free Data – Get unlimited additional 100% FREE data by completing offers
  • Fast Speeds – Enjoy 4G LTE wireless internet (10x faster than 3G)
  • No Gimmicks – Take advantage of no data caps or speed-throttling
  • No Contracts – Cancel anytime without fees or commitments
  • Going over the allotted 500mb/month will cost $0.01-$0.02/MB in additional pay as you go data.

As for the deal: true, you can find the device itself for around $199. But add in the free 2GB of data, and the one year Premier Plan access (normally $9 per month) included here for the same price, and you end up saving well over $100.

If any of this sounds interesting, you can find out more details on Stack Social by clicking here. It appears the deal is only good for US customers, includes free shipping, and comes with a 30-day refund policy in case it doesn’t work out.

Sounds too good to be true… 0.o

We have descended into a nation of bloggers. Nothing is researched. There is no fact checking. Everything is regurgitated from site to site.

  • TesticularFortitude

It’s a shame iDB would recommend this without disclosing the hidden fees to its viewers.

    • Chris Wagers

Save me some time. What did they leave out?

      • TesticularFortitude

I can no longer find the original page I was looking for. But search for freedompop ripoff or freedompop scam. It sounds like a “good deal” but it’s not.

    • What’s a shame is that you take to the comments without really explaining what these fees we didn’t disclose are. I think we share basic pricing information fairly well:

      Quote from the post:

“As for the deal: true, you can find the device itself for around $199.
But add in the free 2GB of data, and the one year Premier Plan access
(normally $9 per month) included here for the same price, and you end up
      saving well over $100.”

That’s pretty much it. People interested in it can look into it more.

      • TesticularFortitude

It’s a shame I’m too lazy to do your job for you. You can’t call something a good deal without first looking into it.

      • Alex Rodriguez

Your doing his job? Wtf really ?

I thought as an informed consumer that you would get off your ass and do your own decision making. You act like these guys are getting rewards for promoting this. I’m tired of all you trolls bitching because in reality you are too dumb and lazy to do anything in life!

      • TesticularFortitude

Try reading it again but slower this time. I never said I was doing his job. In fact, I said I’m too lazy to. 😉

        Next!

      • Alex Rodriguez

Yes you corrected me…. YOU ARE TO LAZY TOO… Hahaha

        Your funnier than I expected.

      • Alex Rodriguez

Yo testicledude for a guy with a name like that you sure have a “little man complex”

It’s okay the world needs little guys too

      • TesticularFortitude

        lol…

      • You don’t have to call us off on it without giving concrete reasons why it’s not a good deal. You’re basically taking us down without giving any good reason why.

This hotspot costs $200 and gives you 2GG/month of free data for a year. After that year, I believe it’s 500MB free/month. Still a good deal. Additional data obviously comes with a cost, just like it does on your carrier (no surprise here).

If you’re going to come and throw some cold water on all this, at least give us some details instead of hiding behind you’re admitted laziness.

        Thanks

      • the 2GB is just for the first month, not for a year:

Free Data – With this promotion you get 2GB 4G LTE Data FREE for the first month, then 500MB FREE every month after that, no questions asked.

  • chumawumba

    Sprint’s network? Forget it.

  • Jeff Ramirez

You lost me at “completing offers.” Thanks, but no thanks.

  • Jack Wong

The device cost already pay for the service.

  • mine

This is far from the jailbreak-tweak downloading/buying and blogging a
review about it that I’m used to… This is just another way to put ads
on your website to make money… On the one hand I get it guys… On the
other hand though… It hurts 🙁

    😉

thanks for the information. I’ve been reading this blog for a long time because of the different ways this blog tries to help out the general public. Much appreciation.

Per the company press release [read below excerpt or google it], it
stated 3G is free. I pointed this error out to freedompop’s facebook
wall and they deleted my comments. If this is an error, they should
apologize for the error and retract the statement. I’ve been a customer
with freedompop since January 2013 and I find them to be
misleading/obfuscatory! The only way to prevent freedompop from
misleading the consumer, people need to step up the plate and file
formal complains to FTC, BBB, and California Office of Attorney General
Consumer Affairs, otherwise they will continue the deception.

“FreedomPop Expands Network To Include Nationwide LTE Wireless Internet Service

America’s free mobile company adds Sprint LTE network access and launches its new FreedomSpot 5580 LTE mobile hotspot

    LOS ANGELES, Aug. 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — FreedomPop today
announced a major new milestone: its expansion to Sprint’s LTE network,
guaranteeing high-speed LTE coverage across the US. Along with its
network growth, the company is introducing a new FreedomSpot 5580 LTE
mobile hotspot that will provide FreedomPop customers 500 MBs a month of
100 percent free access to 4G LTE network speeds with nationwide backup
    access on 3G.”

It’s no surprise that people have a hard time believing anything. I couldn’t be any happier. Especially telling people the cost, then they get defensive, sticking up for why they spend 180$ a month.
