Motion sickness

As we noted just a few minutes ago, iOS 7.0.3 is out with a bevy of new features, but one of the most desired features for a lot of folks is likely flying a bit under the radar. If you’re one of those impacted by iOS 7’s animation and parallax effects, then listen up, this pertains to you.

iOS 7.0.3 contains a much more potent “reduce motion” setting than previous iterations of iOS 7. In past firmware, the Reduce Motion setting located under Settings > General > Accessibility, did little to alleviate the motion sickness experienced by some unfortunate users. That’s all changed with iOS 7.0.3, as the animation effects have been seriously downgraded thanks to an enhanced motion reducing setting.

As you can see from the video above, the effect is drastically different than before. The Z-axis zooming effects that iOS 7 has been lauded for are reduced to mere fade ins and out with the Reduced Motion toggle flipped on. Previous motion reducing mainly applied to the parallax effect on the Home screen background, and not to general animations.

I certainly don’t recommend using the setting, unless you are indeed suffering from motion sickness while using iOS. It definitely takes a lot of the wind out of iOS 7’s forward thinking sails and significantly reduces its character.

What do you think?

  • Parth Patel

    The video is unavailable…?

    • Liam Mulcahy

      there’s a fade animation

      • Freddy Born

Why don’t they give the option to disable paralex only?

      • Ulysses Rodriguez

        TELL ME ABOUT IT >:(

      • sw201444

THIS. I am staying on .0.2 because i like the animations but hate the parallax battery drain.

      • Chris Brown

because IO7 is ridiculous and bad? 🙂 boycot io7 on fb

      • Kekker

    • Harald Tan

It feels like iOS 6 all over again.

  • David Gitman

    Helped my iPhone 4 a lot 😀

    • i’m_usB

      how aboUt pErformaNce ?

      • @sexyhamthing

is there a spider in your shift key

      • David Gitman

        still kinda bad

  • Garrett Alkofer

i just want to disable the animations altogether, they are far too slow. It’s annoying having to wait 3 seconds after I unlock my phone for the home screen animation to finish before I can do anything.

    • Liam Mulcahy

Double press your home button and slide up on the apps that come up

      • José Gabriel Rivera Velázquez

It doesn’t matter if you have apps running or not. Once you unlock the phone you have to wait like .5 seconds until all the icons zoom into the home screen.

      • sanguiseritmeus

Killing off apps running in the multitasking area has absolutely nothing to do with Garrett’s issue.

  • Michael T. Simpson

Does having “reduce motion” on still kill the batter?

    • Beta382

It never did in the first place

  • Garrett Alkofer

Now the question is, “Is it safe for hopefuls of an iOS 7 jailbreak to update?”

    • 4p0c4lyps3

+1. This info can’t reach us soon enough.

  • Fevostone

It feels way faster and that’s always a good in my book..!

  • Timothy

What I’m wondering is how much it speeds up the animation time, if at all. Any news on that part?

  • Linton Findlay

i miss the old animations, looked good on 5s

    • Chindavon

Animations are still there, unless you turn them off.

      • Linton Findlay

i turned parallax off to save battery

  • Alejandro Arredondo Castro

This update is not available via OTA??

    • bloodshed

      It is.

      • Alejandro Arredondo Castro

Do you think that updating is a good idea? Because of jailbreak?

  • Deacon

I’d like the update but don’t want to get rid of the app motion, just the paralex for battery, looks like that’s not an option

    • thejohnnycakes

yeah, i’ve had reduce motion mainly for battery concerns. I’m wondering if it’s really that bad, cuz i like the app motion.

  • yzjustdatguy

I wish they would have reduce the animation for multitasking too

  • Question

Opening apps with reduce motion on is fine i like its faster but when u open a folder it looks ugly.

  • hkgsulphate

or only me I like the fade animation more!

  • “Reduce Motion” is On on my iPhone from now on. I cannot stand those animations that make my device feel like it’s slow. I’ll miss parallax effect, but I certainly won’t miss these animations

    • Timothy

Is there a noticeable difference in the actual speed of being able to use apps after opening them? Or is it mostly an illusion of the animation being faster?

      • From my completely unscientific testings, it appears faster.

      • Timothy

I noticed on my iPhone 4 that I can swipe between pages in folders while the fading animation is still in progress, but it doesn’t seem to work that way when exiting a folder to the home screen. And my phone is too slow to test the response time after the animation of opening an app.

      • JS3

duh, of course it would be faster… THEY TOOK THE ANIMATIONS COMPLETELY OUT lol which basically takes away from the ios 7 feel.. BUT this is what all the cry babies wanted so i just hope their happy now!!!

    • oralarts

I’m with Jeff on this one. The animations and parallax effect add a lot of depth and character to iOS 7.

    • 4p0c4lyps3

I’m rite there with ya. So darn tired of ios7 seeming so laggy on my 5S.

  • Frozen Bee .GFKS

this whole “motion sickness” is bullshit…

    • Jason Stolow

It is effecting me so it definitely wasn’t BS to me. I can now upgrade to IO7 because of this update

  • Joseph Thebigragu Plaza

I must be missing something, because I had this option on ios7 since beta 1.

    • Timothy

The “Reduce Motion” option now not only applies to parallax motions, but home screen and app launching animations as well.

      • Joseph Thebigragu Plaza

Just found that out by playing with it. Seriously though: apps and folders that zoom in and out give people motion sickness but they can sit there on safari all day and zoom in and out of the pages with no problem.

      • Timothy

Yeah, I don’t get the whole motion sickness complaint, but I’m kinda glad it happened if for no other reason than we got a way to speed up the animations in iOS 7. I didn’t complain on about them on my iPhone 4, but they’re painfully obvious when using an iPhone 5s, because it’s capable of so much more speed.

      • Joseph Thebigragu Plaza

I never though of it like that!

      • Jason Stolow

The problem is where it zooms in and out. Before ios7 it zoomed in and out in the center of the screen. ios7 zooms in and out depending on where the app is on the screen. That is the issue

      • Joseph Thebigragu Plaza

        Than why eliminate transitions altogether?

  • Umut Bilgiç

Oh god, i just want the animations to get a little bit faster. It just feels long and repitetive after the first two hours of iOS 7. At least thats how I see it, and I dont think I am alone. It feels very slow after sometime. Makes me miss the snappier iOS 6 animations. iOS 7 animations are cool, asd characteristics and all that, but just feels very slow sometimes.

  • Tony Trenkle Jr.

It’s not forward thinking if it’s making your device slower, which the animations did. I can’t wait til I get home from work so I can download this.

  • kenzie t

I wish it would remove the fade animation as well. I dont need my phone to be pretty, I need it to be useful and fast.

    • Aleksandar Homa

Now that ship is not gonna sail in on Apple’s Cool dock.

  • Fardeen Beharry

i kinda miss the old behaviour where i could turn off parallax and still use the zoom in and out. i feel like the zoom in and ou is what made ios 7 special in a away. not with the fade effect my ios 7 feels like it lost some part of its identity and behaves more like ios6 with a skin pain

  • Lance Baker

I definitely think parallax and zooming effects should be controlled separate. I love the zooming but always found the parallax buggy.

    • chumawumba

Funny its the other way around for me

    • tape

I hate the zooming because it takes way the heck too long, but I love the parallax.

      • Lance Baker

I agree about it being slow. That could certainly be fixed. But the effect is nice overall.

    • bloodshed

      you sir, read my mind.

  • Beta382

That’s too bad. I like the way Reduce Motion already was, where it just stopped the movement of icons and alerts, but kept the zooming. I hate the movement of the icons and background when you move the device, it just makes it feel fragile, or shaky.

  • Adam

I think the fade animation is awful now.

  • Christof

Had a 7.0.2 OTA update. Nothing more until here…

  • Dri

can some one tell me how to get google calendar to work on the stock calendar app on ios 7?? it work`s on ios 6 but not on ios 7.

am i the only one with this problem?

  • Martin

I’m on a 5s and I personally like reduced motion being ON. I think the fade is a lot nicer than the zooming.

  • JRaynor

i dont suffer from any motion sickness or anything like that but IMO the fade in, out looks 10x betters that the annoying zoom every time

now apple do some makeups to some icons so looks more in line with the rest of the os

  • Alexander Reimann

I wish I could only turn of parallaxing and leave the rest on 🙁

  • JS3

well there ya go ya bunch of baby back lil pussy bitches! hope your happy now! if not then go to android!!

  • mickyimp

How are animations a forward thinking ?

  • Tom

    ios 6 had better animations

  • Tom

i used to like ios 7 animations without paralax effect now that option is gone

  • mav3rick

Funny how attributes like “laggy” are now so often attached to the “forward thinking” user experience on this neonOS. Even on the top end 5s. Before lag was going only together with Android. The so called “axis” and the horrid “zoom” effects invented to attract users on clownyOS needed a kill switch just after one month. Happy struggling everyone!

    • xSeriouSx

      That’s thinking different…calling problems features.

  • DeltaTau

What’s forward thinking about animated transitions? On the ipad 2 they would freeze in mid-zoom occasionally and require a forced restart.

  • sanguiseritmeus

Character schmaracter. Thank God that you can finally get rid of the majority of the zooms and slow animations. They took too long anyway, and now that they’re removed/reduced, the phone is snappy again!!! I was envying the speed of my wife’s iPhone 5 with iOS6!!!

  • selman özçelik

I certainly won’t miss these bullshit animations. my phone is much much much faster now. thanks apple.

  • Miguel Acevedo

Display Candy tweak animation on iOS7!!!! Apple like Jailbreak more then us jejeje

  • Ronan Miranda

They Added the “Reduce Motion” Button on Iphone 4, But he has no Parallax!!!

  • I liked the Reduce Motion option just the way it was. All I want is to disable the stupid parallax effect. Now I have to choose between having it all turned on or all turned off. As usual, Apple f*cks it up!

  • BiffBoop

You must not have a life if “character” to you means nauseous icons.

  • stop moaning guys, animations on, animations off, its slower blah blah blah, its fine, don’t like? it get another phone! lol

  • MostlyWater

The fade-ins/outs are slightly better than the previous juvenille zoom-animations, but they are nonetheless still USELESS ANIMATIONS. I’m hoping 7.0.4 will allow me to turn them off ALTOGETHER. Apple, when I click on the home button, show me the home screen as fast as possible. I don’t want to wait .4 seconds for your fade-in animation to complete any more than I wanted to wait .5 seconds for your zoom animation to complete. I don’t even want to wait .0001 seconds if it’s not necessary. Capiche?

  • Chris Brown

Sorry? it takes wind out of thinking? just by not using parallax?
i think the issue, more importantly is, does it speed up the backward thinking of the new IOS 7.
I’m pretty sure apple will keep on forcing it’s user to have things the uses hate, but i don’t describe that as good or forward thinking, sorry. i’m not sure really whats so forward thinking about it?
Let me know on BoyCot IOS7 on facebook …
many thanks 😀 my Parallax is off….

  • DrPreston

I hate this new setting. I want the old one back that only disabled the parrallax effect. I don’t like that the parrallax effect stretches my wallpaper.

  • Emanuel

I actually recommend, even if I do not suffer. It’s actually speeding your device and adding extra juice!
