iPhone 5.7 (T3 magazine concept teaser 001)

Though we’re just a few weeks removed from the iPhone 5s launch, rumors of Apple’s next-generation handset are already starting to pile up. At least thus far they’ve been fairly consistent: the display is going to get a size bump.

And that’s what Jeffries analyst Peter Misek is predicting too, after returning from a meeting last week with Apple’s Asian suppliers. Misek issued a note to investors this afternoon calling for an ‘iPhone 6’ with a 4.8-inch display…

CNET reports:

“After meeting last week with Apple suppliers in Asia, Misek issued a note to investors on Monday in which he said that the iPhone 6 would offer a 4.8-inch screen. If true, that would be a hefty increase over the 4-inch screen found in the current iPhone lineup.

Misek didn’t reveal exactly what triggered his prediction, but he did note that the new screen size would drive a huge number of upgrades. Around 50 percent of smartphones shipped last quarter had screens larger than 4 inches, compared with just 20 percent a year prior.

“We think the 85M iPhones eligible for an upgrade when the iPhone 6 launches (we think Apple is targeting Sep 2014) could be boosted by another 5-10M from people who skipped the 5S/5C cycle,” Misek wrote.”

Misek joins a long line of pundits and analysts, including the highly accurate Ming-Chi Kuo, in forecasting that Apple will go bigger with the next iPhone. The size predictions seem to fluctuate though, between 4.5 and 6-inches.

Back in September, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple was testing iPhones with screen sizes ranging from 4.8 to 6-inches. So just what size the handset’s display will be is still a mystery, but bigger seems to be a definite.

The original iPhone had a screen size of 3.5-inches, which Steve Jobs described as ‘really big.’ And it stayed that size until last year, when the iPhone 5 launched with a 4-inch display.

If that’s true, I’ll not only be singing in the rain, but in a tornado. 😀

    • Question

Lol i see what u did there

  • jocastro

    i want lol, cant wait

  • chumawumba

  • Taf Khan

Can we have it in the Spring please Apple! September 2014 seems a very longtime to wait..

  • CA$H

Just bring out a iPhone 5s XL with a 4.8 inch in 3 months instead can’t wait a year

    4.8 FTW!

  • mahe

the 5(s) is big enough …
I hope the phone won’t get bigger, there is still a little space ^^

    • Maxim∑

I wouldnt be against 2 models. A smaller one and a larger one

    • illK†Δ

Not a bigger phone but a bigger screen. 🙂

      • mahe

        that’s what I hope 🙂

  • tstsr6

Why does everyone want a bigger screen on the iPhone? I think the iPhone 5’s screen size increase was pushing it a bit – the original size is perfect in my opinion. You can get to touch the whole screen with your thumb holding the phone in one hand

Steve Jobs didn’t want a bigger screen and there must be a reason for it

    • Chindavon

      It’s definitely needed. Overdue infact.

      • tstsr6

But why? It just makes it bigger and more bulky – it’s a phone, not a tablet

      • Chindavon

Because media & game consumption are what these smartphones nowadays are mostly used for. They can keep a 4″ model but many are itching for a bigger screen.

      • George Hu

I’ve seen my friend play a Halo trailer on Youtube from his Galaxy S4, it looks way better than what my iPod Touch 5G screen can output. The larger is really really overdue. His S3 doesn’t feel that bulky compared to my iTouch.

      • chris125

4.8 isn’t that big. Unless you have tiny hands go hold an s3 with its 4.8 inch screen and its not that big. Plus apple has a lot of bezel they could shrink to make the overall size not much larger

    • Bill D.

Steve Jobs while a genius was not always right. I believe this is one of those times. 4.5 inches is the sweet spot for me

    • chris125

he also didnt want a smaller tablet and we all know how that turned out.

    • Jerk Face

You have chic sized hands, I do not. Therefore, I would like a bigger phone.

    • mav3rick

4 has some magic form factor with perfect sizes for a phone.

    • Justin Rowe

I totally agree the screen size is fine how it is.
There’s a reason like you say that Steve Jobs stuck with the size of the iphone in that it can be used with one hand comfortably.

      • Eduardo Marquez

I dont have big hands bc they are proportional to my body im on 5’6 so the iphone is fine the way it is now for me but i can image a football or basketball player holding his beloved iphone lol. Its not for everyone but deffinitley needed.

    • Dan

That’s your opinion. Some people want bigger screens.

Jobs probably wouldn’t of wanted a plastic iPhone with a crocs case that shows hon through the hole, but now you have it.

  • Charlie Val

As an Android guy ( I own and love iPad)

    This is great news. Finally.

    • Taf Khan

      Will you consider switching…?

I know so many dudes that will make the jump to ios if the screen is bigger.

      • Dan

Imo, if they make a 5” screen phone, I will most likely switch. Hopefully it’s not just stretched vertically.

  • Yes

5 inch WIDER iPhone would be GREAT!

  • Rowan09

Nice not too big and not too small. I think IOS 7 is made for a bigger screen.

  • Bill D.

The next iPhone will have a 720p 4.5 inches display. I promise you

    • Dontwannaknow

Pls bring 1080p. It will be awesome for playing video.

  • PereZ!

If this is true, I will most likely switch to iOS, but for right now I’m in love with my GS3. I also love my iPad.

  • Obsidian71

  • appl3h4ck3r

galaxy note 2 is 5.5″ i believe. apple you slacking. “Introducing the new iSlack iPhone”

    • Rowan09

Who cares how big the Note 2 is that’s not the best selling smartphone outside the iPhone for a reason it’s just too big for most people. 4.8 inch is a great size for current iPhone customers

      • Frozen Bee .GFKS

no its not….most of people want smartphone and not a f*cking phablet!

      • Rowan09

4.8 is not a phablet, the S3 is 4.7 and its far from a phablet.

  • chris125

Just like they have been saying for the past 3 years. Sooner or later maybe they will get it right.

  • PersianHawkes

I find it hilarious that people have been saying they wouldnt want a larger screen on the iphone since other manufacturers started bringing bigger displays. These are the same people that will be first in line to get that iphone with a larger screen. Remember that other manufacturers forced Apple to make that larger screen no matter how bad you speak about them. At least give them credit where its due.

  • Dontwannaknow

Apple pls bring bigger screen with 1080p capability. That will be the best iphone ever.

    • Dao Sasone

      Wita higher ppi too

  • Apanizo2

It really just needs to go a little wider.

  • klouud

I really hope we don’t get anything bigger. I don’t want a tablet in my pocket.

    • Elma

Well dont buy it then, you can get the iphone 6c wich will be the iphone 5s with a plastic shell… Lol..

      • klouud

I fail to see how your statement is laugh out loud funny. But that is always an option — not the laughing part… the having a choice part.

      • Frozen Bee .GFKS

        lol….you’re dumb

    • Dan

they would most likely offer 2 options, all the better

  • batongxue

4.8 is a sweet spot Apple would choose.
I think Apple won’t make the phone too wide, 60 or 61 mm would be nicely small enough yet perfectly fit for 4.8 inch screen.
    Goodbye, bezels!

  • n0ahcruz3

  • Zach Krase

@Codylee first paragraph, the rumor iPhone 5s launch a few weeks away, I ebeliev you mean the new iPads..

  • illK†Δ

    Edge to edge. Perfection.

  • Jarryd Richards

Notice how it said in the article “Around 50 percent of smartphones shipped last quarter had screens larger than 4 inches”. That means that around 50% of people still think that around 4 inches is a good size for a phone.

    • Freed

There’s a difference. One is 50% and rising the other is 50% and declining? Can you guess which?

  • KLau

    NO WAY

  • w1cked4u3c

    4.5 inches in my mouth!

  • mwpitt52

Are you excited to see me or is that the iPhone 4.8 in your pocket?

  • Gróf Attila

bigger is always better…..Altough If apple decides to go with a better screen they face a huge problem that nor samsung nor htc could solved yet, and it is optimizing the os the the bigger screen. IT DOES NOT mean to make everything bigger, it means to use the extra space for your benefit.
Believe it or not it takes years to develop how you can use bigger screen for more tasks.
In my opinion that’s why apple went with the 4 inch. People wanted bigger screen but they couldn’t give more capabilities with the bigger screen. It was a compromise between apple and iphone users.

I believe that galaxy s131214 bla bla fits ok in your hand but what can u use the bigger screen for? videos, games? yeah and thats all.

Android is made for a huge range of screen sizes and the bigger the screen the more it get stretched.

  • Gróf Attila

  • Macdemon

I for one, would welcome a 4.8inch screen, just think, with an A8 dual core 128bit processor……..WOWWWWW

  • Keith Green

The other week it was supposed to be 5″. Now 4.8″. It better be at least 4.8″ or Samsung is getting my business.

  • Climor

Say it ain’t so… I want a smartphone, not a washing machine in my pocket…

  • Pablo

when would be iphone 6 release date? estimated, acording to previous iphone releases, after an “s” model, mid 2014, end of 2014, 2015?

  • ɑղժɾҽա

4.8″ is a sweet spot for me. I hope Apple adopts IGZO or OLED screen technology in the new device.
