iWork, iPhoto & iMovie apps now free with new iOS device purchases

iWork Tim Cook iPhone event

Who needs Microsoft Office? Apple announced today that iWork — which includes Pages, Numbers, and Keynote — along with iLife — which includes iMovie and iPhoto — are now free with all new iOS devices. That’s right, when you purchase a new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you get five of Apple’s most popular apps free of charge — a $40 value.

The only thing the package doesn’t include is Garageband, which is an integral part of the iLife suite on the desktop. Still, this is an incredible value for new iOS adopters…

Per Tim Cook:

“We think that iWork is a really key advantage for our customers’ productivity, and iPhoto and iMovie are great for their creativity.”

This is a great “gateway drug” for the full OS X version of both iWork and iLife, and might go a long way towards convincing PC users to switch to the Mac once they start using the iOS apps.

What do you think? Are you excited that these apps are now free of charge?

    About time.

  • Jonathan

Wait so, I have an iPod Touch 5. I can’t get it for free?

    • Filipe Martins

yes you can. iPod Touch 5th is the only not-new-device getting it :3

      • Jonathan

What do you mean not new? There’s a 6th gen iPod?

  • Martynas Linkevicius

I hope they give it for free when you clean restore

    • Mohammad Ridwan

Nope. They won’t. You’ll have to buy brand new device.

      • Martynas Linkevicius

        well gawddamnit

  • Markus Hudobnik

    What about existing users?

    • Cesar D

      We want money back ):

      • Tobias9413

You got to use the products for a long period of time before this all happened. thats were your money went. so there really is no reason to want your money back

  • queen_ir3ne

Glad I didn’t purchase any of those apps. Now I’ll get em for free! :D

    • Jonathan

      I purchased iMovie. -_-
Oh well, at least iPhoto will be awesome.

      • Falk M.

iPhoto for iOS is mediocre imho…

      • Jonathan

        As is your spelling.

        *medicore

      • Falk M.

I suggest you look up the word and check the spelling yourself, Mister.

      • Jonathan

        *caugh* oops.

  • Joseph

So existing users and previous iOS device owners are now suckers? Great.

    • Julio Cesar

They can download for free, but iOS 7 will show a notification offering it. (like iBooks already shows an notification in iOS 6)

      • Joseph

        Ah. Fair enough.

      • Anthony Antunez

So we have to wait for iOS 7? They aren’t showing that they are free on my iPhone 5 with iOS 6.

      • Julio Cesar

        Probably.

      • dpacemaker

It’s only free for devices purchased after Sept. 1st 2013. So no not everyone will get it free.

      • Julio Cesar

Where did you get this information?

      • Dishank Narang

        it is on apple’s website

‘ iPhoto, iMovie, Keynote, Pages, and Numbers are free on the App Store for qualifying iOS 7 compatible devices activated after September 1, 2013.’

      • Julio Cesar

Hum, that’s a little sad, but when you do a clean installation you activate the device again… So in theory this should work on any iOS 7 devices…

But maybe it will be free for every device later, let’s wait and see.

      • dpacemaker

Apples website. Its at the bottom of the ios 7 page.

      • dpacemaker
      • dpacemaker

At the bottom of the whats new in iOS7 page. #4

      • what!

That B.S. I guest im going to switch to SG. Not fair that they comeout to make something free only if you purchase a new product after they discontinue the iPhone 5… I guess they’re stamping “sucker” on all of our foreheads. Well see you later Apple.

      • dpacemaker

I was bummed too, but i think eventually they will be free on all platforms. why else would they make the cloud version available for free. i know it could be to have people buy it, but i think that they may see a benefit to having their Office equivalent be free on all platforms. MS Office is a subscription now i believe, and that is not good.

  • elephant

    i paid for the iWork………….

    • omrishtam

      poor guy….

    • Singed

Then you had the ability to use the app for a minimum of several months before those who gets it for free. I’m pretty sure it was announced at this site that the pack will be free in a few months.

  • nyangejr

that means it comes pre installed right? or am i not understanding anything

  • Keabsy

I did a little research about this on Apple’s website and found this out:
“iPhoto, iMovie, Keynote, Pages and Numbers are free on the App Store for qualifying iOS 7–compatible devices activated after 1 September 2013. Seewww.apple.com/pt/ios/whats-new/ for iOS 7–compatible devices. Downloading apps requires an Apple ID.”

  • Ismail ‘marco’ Azeem

so even if i install iOS 7 and activated it on 18th this month will i get it for free?

  • Sagar Acharya

I have a iPad mini, can i get it for free?

  • davva360

I do think they should make it free for everyone at this point. I already own all apart from keynote but I still dont see why I should have to pay for it or wait until I get my next new apple device.

If they dont make it free for everyone it will piss as many people off as it pleases.

  • Anthony Nguyen

Wait, I bought a iPhone 5 exactly a month ago, so does iWork and iLife apps is free? Or I you have to get a iPhone 5S or 5C to get those apps free?

  • Quang

“iPhoto, iMovie, Keynote, Pages, and Numbers are free on the App Store for qualifying iOS 7 compatible devices activated after September 1, 2013.”

  • http://www.avault.com Saulo Benigno

I can see a jailbreak tweak in the future enabling old devices…

  • Guest

Maybe a jailbreak that can change the activated date?

  • Przemysław Romanik

wait. What will happen when I’ll buy used and defaulted iPhone 4S (because I am selling my i4) and configured it with my Apple ID? Will I get those apps?

  • Mike

Well I’ve been liking safari lately and been wanting to switch from chrome but since I’m not getting these for free I guess I’ll just stop using safari and stay with chrome and google docs since it is free…thanks apple for trying to force people to upgrade…..but no thanks.

  • Jess Lopez Zuniga

I just got mine and my husbands iPad2
mine is white 64 gig his is black 32 gig..his had it free and mine doesn’t?…
