Martin Hajek’s vision of the Lord of the Rings iPhone 5S Home button

iPhone 5S (silver rounded Home button, Martin Hajek 001)

A pair of sketchy images posted Friday by the Chinese-language blog C Technology prompted quite a stir among technology denizens. If you haven’t seen them already, the purported photographs show an odd-looking iPhone 5S packaging (likely Photoshop’d) sporting device graphics on the box’s front. The most curious aspect of it: a redesigned Home button, without the square in the middle and with a silver ring around it.

The photos led armchair analysts to postulate that the ring is actually a fingerprint sensor – nevermind that virtually every single rumor points to the sensor being actually built underneath the Home button. Anyway, here’s 3D artist Martin Hajek’s awesome Lord of the Rings mockup which draws from the supposedly “leaked” packaging…

For starters, here are the dubious iPhone 5S packaging shots – notice the silver ring around the Home button.

And here’s Hajek’s render.

Awesome, no?

Don’t you notice anything unusual about the above shot and the closeup top of post?

iPhone 5S (silver rounded Home button, Martin Hajek 003)

Yup, Hajek is calling for an LED-illuminated ring.

It’s pure speculation, but we’re posting it here for academic purposes. Surely the LEDs would have leaked by now – unless Tim Cook meant business when he threatened doubling down on secrecy.

Even though fingerprint scanning is widely accepted to become the pivotal iPhone 5S feature, we’ve seen little to no leaks to prove beyond doubt that Apple has integrated an AuthenTec-made sensor right into the Home button.

Also notice how Hajek’s vision calls for a Home button without the iconic square icon in the middle – again, contrasting the leaked Home button components we’ve seen so far.

“Will it be flush with the front glass, will it be metal or also glow?”, Hajek asks himself.

The mystery will be solved in less than 48 hours.

Others have dreamed up their own version of the silver ring, like Mohammed Madinah (below).

      Fantastic Porn Screen? :P

  • Nipplesourus

    Still needs porn.

    • DexterWhite

You mean like a stock app with a lot of pornographic hardcore content? And a premium-ship membership for beastiality etc.
Apple would probably take 50 bucks a week for that kind of subscription.

      • ConduciveMammal

        And they’d make a killing!

  • Philipp Steigler

I think it’s not a sensor, it could be a notification LED :)

    • Sokrates

      GREAT idea!!

      • Philipp Steigler

yeah, with different colors. green for sms and blue for mails and stuff like that.

      • Markus Hudobnik

This would be deemed “innovative” and I will be extremely jealous. I would have to wait for iPhone 6. :(

      • Ray V

Cool and useful? Yes. Innovative? Not exactly (e.g. see blackberry)

    • mehrab

      Its both.

      • Frozen Bee .GFKS

        i HOPE!!!

    • Maxim∑

its a sensor for sure because the patent said the ring contains 5,000 electrodes for fingerprint sensing but a LED ring would also be really nice!!

    • dpacemaker

I’ve been saying that it might have a light in the ring to show when the fingerprint is wrong and right. Red for wrong, green for right, and white for notifications.

    • Tobias9413

I love this idea. Would’ve never thought of something like this.

    • onebyone_

      may be you’re right!
the “ring” on the home button reminds me the circles en the default dinamic wallpaper.

      That would be soo awesome

    • FOFF

      better be

  • illK†Δ

I like it. Would be the first ever change to the iconic home button

  • Kyle Beroney

It’s be a huge change for apple. I have mixed feelings…btw when does the keynote start for tomorrow? Anyone know or have a guesstimate?

    • mehrab

Go here wheniskeynotedotcom replace the “dot” with a “.”
This site gives you a countdown

    • dedegarrido

its not tomorrow… its Tuesday at 10 AM

    • FOFF

IOS7S look is a huge change and a bad one

  • Moi

This silver ring is a part of the new Senser and apple referred to it as silver rings in the invitation of the next event

    • FOFF

      it needs an led

  • Fevostone

I hope it is a LED Notification light as well as a finger print scanner APPLE WE need to know if we have a notification without waking up the phone.

    • Kyle Beroney

That is what the LED flash is for under accessibility settings tab…

      • Fevostone

Sure but I mean a real one not my flash lighting up the room wen I’m chilled in bed..!

      • David Villamizar

The flash is the best alarm ever.

      • CryptoCoin420

scares the crap outta me when its laying on my side table and I am trying to go to sleep and it lights up my whole room including my closed eye lids! I have to leave my phone face up when i go to sleep because of this!

      • Fevostone

I don’t want it to wake me me mate…??

      • Ray V

No that is not what its for. In a roundabout way, yes, but its technically for people that are impaired in some way.

      • Kyle Beroney

either way…some ppl who know about it can use it for that way. goes off for me whenever i get a new notification…shockingly.

  • Rajan

Wouldn’t it be cool, if the silver ring could act as led light for your notifications when the iPhone is locked?

  • disqus_9VNAlI3tEi

So I guess instead of showing up the screen Siri would glow around the home button? That would be pretty cool!

    • Gate

      That would be awesome
I do think they should bring back the classic purple color back that way :)

  • Matthew Cooper

Just watched a Note 3 vid and all I have to say is Wow. If all Apple is busting out new is a fingerprint scanner then they are falling behind as far as features go. I see myself using a scanner maybe once in awhile especially since it wont have deep 3rd party support. The Note 3 has “everyday” features…..

    • mehrab

You seem like someone who never used a note / android im am an ios user and an android i switched to android then switched back i use android along side but my choice is ios no doubt. Those features scribbling with a stylus wont really help you much. Those features are very wacky and none of them are everyday features. Quickcommand is actually pretty dumb. Its a shortcut to the features of the spen which nobody in reality uses. Other then features androids have big specs but in reality they dont matter cos they still fail to beat the iphone in performance camera quality etc and the build is weird on it it literally i s fake plastic leather

      • Matthew Cooper

I have owned every iPhone since the very first one and I have owned the S3, S4, and Note 2. Phones are my thing so I kinda know what im talking about. I can take apart any iPhone and put it back together with my eyes closed so im not just an Android fanboy either. Im still going with the Note 3 based on all my knowledge about phones. But I probably will buy the iPhone 5S at some time just so I can still say ive owned them all =)

      • mehrab

Ok whatever you like but the way you say these features are useful its not useful and specs dont matter on different os”s

      • Matthew Cooper

Sooooo did u watch the Note 3 features vid or are u just assuming its the Note 2 repackaged?

      • Glorin

numbers won’t make you more creative, if you are dumb and show off with numbers.. keep doing it, No one cares.

      • Matthew Cooper

I never said anything about specs or numbers. Can u edit your comment to make it more relevant? It may actually make me look dumb instead of yourself

      • Rowan09

I watched the video and its nothing revolutionary as your making it to be, it’s just minor software updates with air gesture and that box drawing thing. I am a phone technician as well and Samsung phones are definitely easy to fix but the parts are expensive. The Note 3 is an S upgrade just like the 5S is going to be.

      • Matthew Cooper

Ok ok for the sake of argument please tell me how a fingerprint scanner is so innovative and then tell me how it could be integrated so well into IOS. Cause I guarantee u every awesome idea u think the scanner could be used for wont be made available til at least the iphone 8. U will get a bullshit feature that is barebones and the code to integrate it wont be fully released to 3rd party deveolpers. Which means ur scanner is pretty barebones and it is the “Siri” of the 5 series. And we all know how shitty her first release was. Ur new iphone feature isnt revolutionary its basic trickery to get u to upgrade. And the iphone 6 will trick u again by making the scanner slighly better.

      • Rowan09

The fingerprint scanner isn’t out yet so I can’t say something I don’t know about if its innovative or whatever. Nevertheless none of these companies on the phones this year including Apple are releasing evolutiionary items and revolutionary. To be honest nothing has been revolutionary since the first iPhone all these other things are software updates and internal upgrades.

      • mehrab

I watched the event like so many other events of android flagships. Its just specs specs and useless features nothing revolutionary.

    • felixtaf

I have a simple question. How many third party apps did the S-Pen supports by default???? Wow for what 4K video?? Multi-Screen??? 1080p screen? etc etc? When Samsung does something new, its called Innovation and when Apple does something new, its called copy or shit… isnt it???

Do explain the “everyday” features plz…

      • mehrab

Everyday features include whipping out a pen from the behind of your phone and doing random drawings with it. Thats all i could think off i had a note 2 for 6 months used the s pen twice? Once for drawing which was not fun at all was quite boring and barely supports apps. And once for a 3 word note :p which was pretty useless. No note 2 users i have seen use the s pen. There are more drawers and note takers on ios without even a pen. Just take a look at the app “paper” its only for ios and see the HUGE LIBRARY of the people who submitted their sketches drawings etc

      • FOFF

        yup

    • FOFF

note 3 looks cool but it runs crappy android so booooooo

    • Fuzzyfish6

Shouldn’t you be out on the street corner selling crack or pimping underage girls? Back to work with you Lil Serf.

  • Maxim∑

    my precioussss

  • Thiago Vaccaro

Does anyone know which font does iOS 7 use?

    • riomar

      Helvatica Thin

      • FOFF

        Helvetica for ever

    • Frozen Bee .GFKS

      Helvetica

    • Neil Sardesai

      It’s Helvetica Neue Light.

  • Rom

They need to get rid of the home button altogether and have a touch sensitive button/pad or whatever it’s called. I mean a button where you don’t have to press just touch it (don’t know what it’s called sorry)

    • Chazy Ronnie

Capacitive button is such a hindrance for gaming, browsing a web, certain apps and waking the device, home button is great and its patented no one can copy it.

    • riomar

Nah, sometimes that’s annoying, If it was capacitive, you may touch it without intention, whereas the physical button, well you have to press it. Also, you can hand your phone in any way, which is good!

    • FOFF

      no

  • Gate

    I really like it

  • Jim Hart

This is getting to the point that this comment needs to be made: “oh please”

  • Lassi K

Anyone knows if the iPad 5 will have fingerprint sensor too? Googling “iPad 5 fingerprint” will only give results for iPhone 5S…

    • chumawumba

No point googling considering no one knows

      • FOFF

        google knows all things

  • Chazy Ronnie

Im diggin this, i want this now!

  • chumawumba

    This guy is really talented

  • n0ahcruz3

Just surprise us apple. Not just some lame a$$ additional row of icons on homescreen and sapphire lens cover (which is irrelevant in image quality) and more battery juice pls not just 1440mah wtf.

    • Fuzzyfish6

Hey Einstein, the use of sapphire has nothing to do with altering image quality. It has everything yo do with being pretty much scratch proof, unless you’re rubbing a diamond up against it. And the iPhone 5 with its ‘small’ battery runs longer while doing more than 98% of all other phones out there so…

      • n0ahcruz3

I’ll choose a carl zeiss lens than a sapphire lens “cover” anyday. take note i said cover not the camera lens. Dont be ignorant.

      • Fuzzyfish6

        Lol

  • Sam L.

One ring to rule them all!

  • Dante Arellano

I hope the fuckert of cook don’t speak to much of shite I hate the guy.

    • Tobias9413

You shouldn’t really be speaking either bro. You can barely spell words.

      • Fuzzyfish6

        Lol

  • hjr9890

Does anyone remember the iRing rumor that would act as an accessory with NFC ? Can this be it?

    • FOFF

      no

  • Steve Jobs

man i would buy it for that home button <3

    • FOFF

      me too

    • Rehan Ahmed

Man, I would buy it if you made a back-from-dead appearance and said that in tomorrow’s keynote…

  • chumawumba

iDB it’s Hajek, not Majek.. You made a typo

    • http://www.idownloadblog.com/author/dujkan Christian Zibreg

      Fixed, thanks bro!

      • chumawumba

        No prob

  • Markus Hudobnik

A LED/fingerprint sensor would be amazing.

  • Rowan09

That’s home button would be sick.

  • CreeDiddy

Absolutely gorgeous concept and render. I am hoping that this holds true.

Simple swipe to left or right with your thumb is green to unlock or red color if denied.

Any SMS notifications turn blue, while emails turn yellow.

So this concept can go a long way for Apple to execute.

  • https://twitter.com/MrElectrifyer MrElectrifyer

Really beautiful design, all that needs fixing is its GUI…hope Winterboard gets ported to iOS 7.

    • FOFF

      yes

  • smtp25

looks crap – i don’t want a glowing button or the ring around it

    • FOFF

well am sure you can turn it off

  • batongxue

He should get a job in Apple!

  • rasengan720 .

if only they make it into a LED that changes color with the color of what the display is displaying kinda like some of the xperia phones.. that’d be awesome!!!

    • FOFF

      yes

  • Joseph A. Ahmad

An LED notification ring would be a great idea. It would look very nice on the 5S. But I’m not holding my breath for it. I’m still focusing (and expecting) on the finger print scanner.

    • Frozen Bee .GFKS

      i hope for both

      • Joseph A. Ahmad

Me too my friend, me too!

  • Yash Gorana

Also, they will change the home button logo to the super-ellipse that they have used for the new iOS 7 icons.

  • iThinkergoiMac

“Also notice how Hajek’s vision calls for a Home button without the iconic square icon in the middle”… Am I missing something? All those renders DO have the iconic square icon in the middle of the home button…

  • James Brown

    My precious

  • Guest

Squares with Round borders? Apple is going to give people with OCD a tough time..

    • FOFF

      hahahahhahhaaa

  • Rehan Ahmed

    It’s a Sensor, it’s a notification LED!
    Why not both?

    • FOFF

      that will be amazing

  • FOFF

it will be awesome if it has a color led there that can blink and glow depending on messages etc..
