iOS 7 general availability pegged for September 10

By , Aug 26, 2013

iOS 7 (App Store teaser 002)

We’ve suspected for some time Apple will be holding its big iPhone event on September 10, with sources claiming a Gold Master iOS 7 build for developers will get released that same day. That’s Apple’s standard modus operandi as past Gold Master (GM) builds were seeded to the company’s registered developers either at WWDC or at iPhone press conferences.

Alleged email communication Siri partner Nuance sent to devs now indicates iOS 7 GA will also be released the same day, on September 10. GA? GM?

There are some caveats here…

The Next Web contributing writer Owen Williams posted the below email from Nuance to his personal blog, it reads:

As you are probably aware, iOS 7 GA will be released on September 10th.

The NDEV Program has pre-qualified that SpeechKit 1.4.5 works properly on iOS 7, but we encourage you to conduct own testing to ensure that when the upgrade happens, your Nuance speech services continue to work seamlessly.

First and foremost, I’m having a really hard time believing a Nuance email message would leak just like that. This is a company behind the Siri voice and an important Apple partner so surely they should know better than that.

With that off of my chest, what exactly is the difference between GM and GA?

In computer programming, a Gold Master refers to a final version of software ready for release to manufacturing. It’s (mostly) the same build that gets preloaded on actual devices prior to shipping.

Nuance email (iOS 7 availability)

A GA build refers to General Availability.

Per Wikipedia, it’s the marketing stage at which “all necessary commercialization activities have been completed and a software product is available for purchase”.

In the vast majority of cases, GM and GA builds are the same.

But as the time between GM and GA can be anywhere from days to weeks to months, in some instances a GA release can be slightly updated and won’t be quite the same as the GM build released to developers.

You may also wonder why release iOS 7 GA for public consumption on September 10 unless the new hardware goes on sale that same day. I find that hard to believe: most rumors point to the September 20 launch in Japan, and even later in the case of China.

iPhone 5S vs 5C casing video

Should the iPhone 5S/5C get announced on September 10 - and if history is an indication - Apple will be taking pre-orders for a week or so before the gadgets hit store shelves. Therefore, don’t count on iOS 7 and new iPhones being available the same day, on September 10, as that would leave no time for review embargoes.

And history indeed is an indication here: Apple tends to post new iOS versions a few days ahead of new hardware availability in order to avoid iTunes server activation issues at launch.

According to the increasingly unreliable BGR, Apple will seed iOS 7 GM to developers on September 10, so developers have a few days to test their warez against the final build, before the new iPhones arrive.

An iOS 7 build for carriers will arrive around September 5, BGR noted. Both builds should be the same and reflect what the general public will get, “barring any major bugs or problems that might be discovered”.

So, in all likelihood Apple will announce the new iPhones and release a final iOS 7 build on September 10 – call it GM or GA – giving us some lead time to update our existing devices. And when the iPhone 5S and 5C arrive a week or so following the announcement, these devices will run iOS 7 out of the box.

Does that make any sense to you?

I hope there are big strides in the stability for the next release. I feel like there is still a lot of polishing for it to go public…

    • Tsavo Walker

Agreed! I am running iOS 7 right now on my secondary device and it is certainly not ready for the public.

      • J M

Yes, and I still have crashes of the messages app, and I actually just had a total crash (with a reboot) two days ago.

    • therealjjohnson

I would have to agree. There are times in which i am unable to access the iTunes Store. It will continually upon entering the app. I literally had to play around with it for 10 mins in order to get into iTunes the other day.

  • Mohammed Sahib

Any word on the beta 7?

    • arrontaylor

Exactly what I’ve been thinking… Hopefully we’ll get it before the end of August?

      • Sam Del Valle

There will be no Beta 7.

    • DarekSlaby

what’s the rush to get beta 7? It’s not like there’s going to be any new features added

      • Mohammed Sahib

Beta 5 solves some bugs but introduces many (on iPad 2). I am looking forward to get a stable build.

    • abdullah575

      It’s today !!

      • Qasim Bashir

        just die in shame

  • Mr. E

I’ll be on iOS 6 until the jailbreak comes out; like many I’m guessing

    • Johnathan Jennings

Besides themes (which I hate anyway), why would you want to jailbreak iOS 7? Yeah quick reply but I don’t care about that anymore. Barely text anymore. iOS 7 has everything I hoped for. I’m staying on stock iOS

      • PainToad

Being able to delete/mark-as-read emails from the notification center.

      • Johnathan Jennings

        You cant already do that?

      • PainToad

        With Lockinfo, not with stock.

      • Johnathan Jennings

Nope.. I can delete my emails from Notification Center and I’m on stock..

      • PainToad

Complete rubbish. You can clear notification, you cannot delete the actual email.

      • Johnathan Jennings

I uh just did.. Cleared them and deleted them..

      • PainToad

I also just tapped danced to the moon. Doesn’t mean it actually happened.

      • Johnathan Jennings

Listen, go to an email, swipe left or right.. Boom. Delete button. It’s gone!

      • PainToad

FFS. You can do that from the email app, not from the notification center (without a jailbreak tweak)

      • Johnathan Jennings

Okay so take 2 seconds and do it from the email app. Jesus. Lazy much? You’re complaining because you can’t delete an email from the notification shade. You had hide it for later when you open the email app. Just shut up.

      • PainToad

So you were wrong, and can’t read where I clearly wrote “…from the notification center” yet I need to ‘shut up’. Good work idiot. It is a big deal, there’s no reason why you should have to exit another app to simply just delete an email. It become a bigger pain when you are using multiple devices.

      • Jonathan

Man, this convo just keeps on going.. longest I’ve seen lol.

      • mickey

This applies to the lockscreen and other apps as well. There’s no reason why actionable notifications shouldn’t be implemented sometime in the future. Why should you have to tap/swipe excessively to perform the same simple functions? Quick reply for example is long overdue. It’d be nice to see it implemented in 3rd party apps too. Facebook for example already has chat heads. If that was considered lazy, than what was the point of anything Apple has added to iOS? Camera shortcut from lockscreen? Control center? Notification center? Multitasking? Gestures? All accessible in a faster more efficient way for us lazy people…

      • FOFF

this dude is trolling why is he not deleted?

      • ✪ aidan harris ✪

To tether. As my carrier is not recognised by an official one by Apple they do not have their own carrier files and as a result I cannot use the personal hotspot feature. The first thing I’ll be doing is installing a tethering app like mywi if (I say if but really it’s a matter of when) a jailbreak comes out for iOS 7…

      • Johnathan Jennings

So you want to tether a limited data plan..? No.. Go to McDonalds. Free Wi-Fi! In America anyway.. I went to Europe and over there Wi-Fi is not the same as in America.

      • PainToad

Oh, you’re American. Explains your stupidity and arrogance.

      • Johnathan Jennings

Yea We’re stupid enough to be far ahead of that shitty country you call home in every aspect. And Arrogance? Duh! This is America. Best country on the planet. Your jackass self can get off of my American website now. Goodbye Infadel.

      • PainToad

Far ahead? Yeah a collapsing economy and a failing healthcare system. I’m from Australia, we are the strongest first world country to avoid a rescission following the GFC. “Infadel”? Yeah because everyone outside of your ignorant ass borders must be muslims hey? Are you a kid or just ‘special’?

      • Elvin Topalov

Australia and Turkey have both avoided a recession. Let’s celebrate together! :D

      • Benchmark Apps

        Australia is Awesome. :P

      • Elvin Topalov

I’ve been to many countries. Each one has its advantages. & I can tell you right now, America isn’t the greatest place to be.

      • Johnathan Jennings

America is the greatest place to be ass hole. Don’t like it? Get your un-American ass outta my country. Goodbye!

      • Elvin Topalov

I was born in America, lol… and you’re mistaken, it isn’t the greatest place to be, it’s the fattest.

      • Jonathan

Actually Mexico is now considered the fattest. No offense to anyone.

      • Elvin Topalov

The recession has made Americans rethink spending all their money on food, don’t worry though, if the economy picks up, we will be the fattest again.

      • Jonathan

        Yay..

      • PainToad

I’m not in your country dipshit. Cannot you not read? I’ve been to your country however. Have you been to mine? Or are you making more ignorant assumptions about us Australian “Infadels”?

      • Marcus Daniel Houser

America is not the greatest country in the world. It’s own Government screws it’s ppl in the as* every chance it gets. QUOTE ‘and one of them is that there is absolutely no evidence to support the
statement that we’re the greatest country in the world. We’re seventh in
literacy, twenty-seventh in math, twenty-second in science, forty-ninth
in life expectancy, 178th in infant mortality, third in median
household income, number four in labor force, and number four in
exports. We lead the world in only three categories: number of
incarcerated citizens per capita, number of adults who believe angels
are real, and defense spending, where we spend more than the next
twenty-six countries combined, twenty-five of whom are allies.’ End Quote. The only reason that I can imagine you would say it, would be because when you were a child you would have to ‘pledge’ you allegiance to a flag over and over again. Brainwash much? Get a little education on a subject and then come back when you have grown a brain.

      • Kurt

Americas not the greatest place? What’s wrong with a little chemtrail here and there polluting the sky and after falls polluting the soil killing the trees/plants? Whats wrong with an inept racist president spying on his civilians? What’s wrong with the militarizing of the police? They should be accosting us willing sticking fully automatic AR-15s in our faces.(end of sarcasm)

      • Kyle

I am an American, honestly that is disrespectful. As is the person who replied to your post. I Disapprove of cultural stereotypes, and I would implore you to do the same. Ignorance is not decided by which country you live in, but rather the interest you take in knowledge. Aka stop hating on America, it is unbecoming, and makes americans want to hate on foreigners like the Jerk who replied first.

      • Elvin Topalov

You’re right, in Europe they use much faster WiFi unlike the companies that offer WiFi here in America.

      • Johnathan Jennings

No you have no idea. Wi-Fi there sucks. When you have it you have to pay for it. And even then it sucked. (London & Paris) the only place I was satisfied with was the Castlerosse Hotel in Killarney Ireland. But London and Paris suck with Wifi. Dublin was pretty good as well.

      • Elvin Topalov

I’ve been out at bars and restaurants in Europe where they gave free WiFi that has blazing fast speeds. & I have to agree on London. WiFi there sucks. A lot.

      • Johnathan Jennings

Haha I agree!! Paris wasnt much better though.

      • Jonathan

Just curious, how is it different?

      • Elvin Topalov

The people are stupider, fatter, and use money to get what they want. That is the only difference.

      • Husam Hamed

I don’t think you know much about tweaks.

      • Johnathan Jennings

I’ve been jailbreaking since 2009.. I know just about all there is to know about tweaks. The only reason I jailbroke on iOS 6 was for Unfold (new lock screen which iOS 7 has) Zephyr, which for iOS 7 is pointless. And then the free iAP tweak. Everything else just adds clutter to the iPhone, making it more like android. I love iOS so I would prefer to keep my iPhone an iPhone. That is all i am saying. Good day to you sir.

      • Husam Hamed

        Swipe selection
        Activator
        Dashboard x
        Dietbar
        .. Need I say more?

      • Johnathan Jennings

Swipe selection.. Best tweak ever made. Ill agree with you on that one. Activator just makes things confusing. So no. Don’t want that. Dashboard X is very buggy and it adds clutter and it’s not fully compatible with other SB tweaks. Makes it look unprofessional. And the widgets move on the screen by themselves. Say you center it, come back 3 mins later it will be in a different position. Diet bar? iOS 7? In case you haven’t noticed the bar is gone completly In iOS 7, so no need for diet bar.

      • Husam Hamed

Well I don’t understand how you think Activator is confusing.. Activator is customized by the user so it’s up to the user to make it function the way he wants.
You maybe right on DashboardX sometimes it does these things but it’s still kinda useful.
And how exactly is the bar gone from ios7? I think you’re confusing the title bar with the status bar or something..

        Well anyways.. that’s my opinion..
And personally.. the most important thing to me other than swipe selection would be winterboard.. which you said you hated..
but I’m a designer myself and I like to customize my phone the way I like. I’m not saying I don’t like the ios7 look, I love it! but I might change some of the icons that I don’t like, like safari..
most people whenever they hear winterboard or theme they think a of a full crappy designed theme and that’s why they hate it, but I think of it as a tool to fix the things that I don’t like.

      • Johnathan Jennings

I like you, you’re not a prick like the rest of these Muslims on here(:

      • Husam Hamed

Thanks?.. but what’s my religion to do with anything?

      • FOFF

its a big part of human emotion so humans will tend to inject it where ever the can like race..

      • TeddyBearStand

        Glad no body saw this

      • 3aloo1

You better respect other religions because people already Down voted you

      • mehrab

I was almost agreeing with everything you say, like about staying on stock ios and supporting then you had to go all racist

      • Px1

You find Activator confusing? Damn you must be very stupid.

      • 6io

That comment was unneccessary, wasn’t it?

      • FOFF

lol lets see if he gets banned

      • Kurt

Swipe selection is the best tweak moving your cursor. Why hasn’t this been implemented on iOS or other OSes?

      • ClaudieX X

I think, because its not working 100% well (just 95%, sometimes a letter appears or disappears) That’s the only reason I can imagine, because its fantastic.

      • mickey

Zephyr is not pointless in iOS7 which only has 1 gesture. I certainly hope chpwn will keep developing it for iOS7 because I will certainly miss it. Besides, the gesture will probably not be used in some apps because of conflicts which leads to some inconsistency throughout the system. iOS 7 surely eliminated a few tweaks but I personally like more flexibility in something like control center, the lock screen, the statusbar or notification center. You can keep your iPhone stock, many of us won’t because we prefer a little more. It’s possible without the jailbreak scene there would be even less progression in iOS over the years. I’m curious why you are so concerned with what we do with our own phones?

      • Matt Taylor

        You’re an idiot

      • Freddy Born

        Emulators

      • FOFF

if you dont know what makes jailbreaking great then jailbreaking is not for you just stick tok your stock device and be happy..

  • Joseph

Hopefully they’ll add a keyboard API in 7.1, or sometime before iOS 8. They stated they probably would, and it would be great.

    • PainToad

      “They stated they probably would”
      No, no they didn’t

    • http://www.idownloadblog.com Sebastien

They didn’t specifically say that. Tim Cook did mention at D11 that Apple will open more to developers in the future, which could potentially mean opening up some APIs such as keyboard to third party devs. Read Tim Cook exact words here: http://www.idownloadblog.com/2013/05/29/cook-on-apple-opening-up-more/

      • Joseph

        Fair enough, my bad.

      • mehrab

They will, tim said he”ll ooen up ios to third parties more in the future now whens the future is the question

    • FOFF

if they are adding controller IPIs they may as well add mouse and key board APIs also

      • Joseph

iOS already fully supports external keyboards, if they can connect properly.

  • PainToad

iOS 7 and a new Prime Minster. The start of September is going to be great.

    • kadeem kadz Dulice

      what ?

    • Kurt

Don’t forget the Note 3! Sept 4th people!

      • Yash Gorana

Lol please continue with their laggy os.

      • Kurt

doesn’t lag. btw, my ipad and iphone lag a lot. more on my ipad.

      • felixtaf

U never mentioned that u own an iPad 1.. lol..

      • Kurt

haha…I’ve mentioned it many times! That’s why I’m so excited to get an iPad 5!

      • felixtaf

I have seen it b4.. lol.. Am getting one too!!!

      • Kurt

        what color?

      • felixtaf

Black slate… Infact, am still confused!!! What about you?

      • Kurt

I’ll get white. My iPad now is black and my HP TouchPad is black. So I think I need a change. I’m pretty excited to get the Note 3 and then the iPad. It will be a good fall us.

      • felixtaf

oh k… I prefer a silver back and black front (like the present models). But I think thats not gonna happen. My iPhone 5 is white. So, I will get black. But I need to have to look at them and then decide.
Saw a leaked display of Note 3. Very thin bezel… Also, there are rumors that it will record 4k video like Sony Honami…

      • Kurt

I was hoping for a smaller bezel. 2.2mm isn’t small enough. The Vega phone I held had no bezel. That and the 441ppi made it one of the most impressive phones I’ve seen. I haven’t heard the rumors of the 4K. That would be cool. I’m hoping for image stabilization like the lumia 920 but one rumor says not till next year and no fingerprint scanner. But other specs look great.

      • felixtaf

ok… Am not a fan of AMOLED, I like LCD. My frnd has a LG optimus G pro. Love to have that display on my note 2 though.. lol… Amoled is good, but i cant take the over-saturation…

I read about 4k in GSMarena and read another that we wont see OIS in note 3. Both are rumors. Am not sure how true they are.

      • Kurt

Why don’t you change the color setting? I’m looking forward to having control over the screen. I’ll probably set it to a natrual setting since I’m an artist and will take pics for instagram with it. Never had an AMOLED screen so I hope I like it. Most people seem to be happy with it so hopefully I end up in that camp.

      • felixtaf

Dont get me wrong. AM not saying its a bad display. I jus cant adjust to it. May be coz of iPhone and iPad 3. I tried changing colour settings too. Am happy with the Note 2. Nt sure if that gonna change after new iPad.

      • Yash Gorana

wait for few months. Then the lag will be strong within the phone/phablet.

  • Andy

So, Basically apple is leaving developers out of Betas for 3 weeks ?
the first week is starting today, so we have 3 weeks to GM with no update from apple ?
I don’t buy it ! we will receive Beta 7 sometime soon with a very minimal changes to Beta 6, and it will be the closest to GM. Unless apple is stupid enough to create a 3 weeks gap to release an unfinished software !

  • Palmer Paul

For all you Yahoo readers out there, I think Christian Ziberg might have just surpassed Chris Chase…

    • Jedediah Kramer

Dude, it would be very very very hard to surpass Chris Chase as far as poor journalism is concerned.

  • max

hope the GA will be released on the 20th.. awesome birthday present!

  • batongxue

Still a long way for the iPad stability of iOS 7.

  • Dante Arellano

I was unhappy with ios7 but in some point I just stared to love it I just clean and modern and even the jailbreak didn’t give to me thank you Jonny!!

And another sheep turned brain washed robot! Yeah, thanks mr nazi ive.

ios 7 will be ready when it is ready

  • Freddy Born

I hope evaders will wait with the jb until the new iPads are released

  • pauleebe

This is for the GM, which isn’t shocking. It’ll likely be the day of or a day or two before the iPhone event.

  • laszlo gaspar

Well i must admit that iOS 7 runs beautifully on the iPad 4, however i have noticed that it lags and apps crash on older devices, particularly ones with less ram.

  • Simonas Narbutas

on my iphone 4s ios7beta6 I feel OS to be a bit laggy. Interface is very neat and elegant, but those animations drives me mad… all that zoom in/out, screen turn on/off… Will be waiting for jailbreak just to disable them :))

  • GuyBey0ndC00L

My only real disappointment with iOS 7 is:

    1. Apple won’t let 3th party apps use “Nitro Engine.”

    2. Can’t customize Control Center

    3. Can’t change default apps.

Other than this it’s really good

    • FOFF

i will just treat it like any other IOS version and wait fro the JB.. I will keep my iphone in 6.1.2 cause its perfect but my ipod and ipad will go to IOS7 fro the controller IPIs etc

      • GuyBey0ndC00L

        I want a bigger iPhone screen : (

    • Simonas Narbutas

      Totally agree..

      1. I never thought nitrous tweak on 6.1.2 jb was helping me that much until I installed chrome on ios 7 on my 4s..

      2. If they chose to copy JB tweaks, at least they could do that right. somebody will use flight mode in Control center and bluetooth, some of people will never use it and those miss a chance on having disable vibro or celular data in there..

      • GuyBey0ndC00L

Apple use let use pick our own toggles and apps for Control Center

  • Zeeshan Mehboob

    long awaited IOS

  • GuyBey0ndC00L

We’re on the 7th iOS now I feel Apple should let developers, app makers, programmers develop Tweaks, Themes, Shortcuts, etc. to improve upon iOS. Apple can use their approval system like they do for the App Store and most importantly charge and make money for these Tweaks.

  • unknown

Folder-In-Folder is clutch for the JB. Hasn’t seen it in iOS 7 yet?

  • http://sciencedem.blogspot.com editor

I was expecting another beta on Monday… but it’s been a no show….

  • joseph

well honestly i think many people still have bugs up to this point is simply because they are using a copyrighted version of the ios, since over 70% of iphones have this software (roughly), its pretty hard to track bugs and all that as many arent even developers, but thats just my thoughts

  • Kevin Kinh

America and Australia all very good place…stand for Power, knownledge and faiths!i love them!

Hopefully an ios7 jailbreak will follow soon. First annoyance; having to lock the phone to see the large clock; and then having the clock vanish after 10 seconds….

  • rehan

and why till now there nothing about the new IOS the was planned to be released on Tuesday !!!
