Alleged plastic iPhone shot pictures a blue variant

Budget iPhone (NowhereElse 001, blue)

Last week, a usually reliable French blog found a pair of images said to depict the polycarbonate shell of Apple’s purported lower-cost iPhone. The Cupertino company has long been said to be working on a lower-cost handset to make inroads into emerging markets like China and India. If these shots are anything to go by, the budget iPhone will come in some vivid colors, like yellow, red and green.

The same blog on Wednesday re-posted another photograph that pictures a blue variant of the device, bringing the number of supposed color choices to four. More tidbits right after the break…

The French blog NowhereElse.fr, which re-posted the new image, cautions it could simply depict Chinese shells for an iPhone knockoff, even if the features, holes and the design match up with previous shots and are consistent with speculative information about the rumored budget iPhone model.

The top image depicts a blue variant and the one below from last week pictured yellow, red and green shells.

Both photographs somewhat corroborate a report by another trusted source, the Japanese blog Macotakara, which heard from sources that the budget iPhone will borrow colors from Apple’s iPhone 4 bumpers.

The bumpers were originally available in black, white, pink, orange and blue so only a blue shell from the leaked images matches Apple’s color choices for the bumpers. On the other hand, the fifth-generation iPod touch sports color choices which are very similar to the supposed budget iPhone shells.

Apple has long been thought to be working on a less-pricey iPhone to help improve its standing in emerging markets like Brazil, Russia, India and China. These BRIC nations are expected to overtake the United States as the world’s top four smartphone markets by 2018.

On Monday, Reuters reported that contract manufacturer Foxconn has begun delivering first budget iPhone shipments to Apple, in time for an apparent Fall release.

So, what do you think: are the shells pictured here for some obscure Chinese iPhone/iPod touch knockoff or do they represent the real thing?

So I’m assuming these budget iPhone are made for 5 year old girls? What kid with any manhood is going to carry around a phone of these colors? except for white

    • Chindavon

A HUGE market is with teenage girls. Young to middle age moms like these hot colors too. So another HUGE market on top of that, and cannot be ignored.

      • Kaptivator

Yup, teenage and tweens. And those that want the software but cant afford or dont want to pay for the premium device. Some will put covers on them so the color really wouldn’t matter.

      • Gorgonphone

Yup and the gay men who women love also will buy those colors more money for apple

      • Richard Gomez

And also the black community who are quite known for wearing bright colors to compliment their dark skin tone.

      • Gorgonphone

Ohhh ot all makes sense now .. I am very very dark and like to wear dark colored clothes like an undertaker and other blacks usually chastize me and insult me for being dark skinned and wearing dark cloths like im not supposed to lol silly humans

    • Phil Randle

That fluro pink colour is heaps popular, you only have to look at the teenage guys who go crazy for the NIKE football boots in the same colour. If they are cheap they will fly off the shelf.

Personally, I think the new iPod touch should have just been the budget iPhone, they already look great.

      • Jerry

makes sense. “Yo son look at my pink iPhone!” LOL

      • Gorgonphone

Yup that pink will be popular atlanta

      • Gorgonphone

Yeah pink is the new masculin coler now that feminism has won lol silly humans

    • Gorgonphone

Females control most retail consumers markets now so yes most now products are sort of feminine

  • mervynraj

apple should stick to their high class products with expensive price tags… thats what makes apple an Apple… please don’t step into the cheap territory of samsung and others…

    • Chindavon

They still will be my friend.

    • Taf Khan

Agree, You don’t see BMW or Mercedes trying to compete with Ford on price.

      • saschaeggenberger

Totally Disagree. BMW has the “i1″ line and Mercedes has introduced the new A-Class (both in Europe)

      • Gorgonphone

Um and both of those are damn over priced

      • saschaeggenberger

Agree. But there is the connection – also the budget iPhone will be overpriced compared to the competition

      • Taf Khan

True but how is that competing with Ford on price? They release different size of cars to appeal to different user groups. The price is much higher than ford.

      • saschaeggenberger

The price is higher but also the build quality is also higher on both BMW & Mercedes…

      • Kaptivator

Disagree. Mercedes has the A-Class and BMW has the 1 series. They are capturing the “young professionals” that want the brand but cant afford the premium classes of Mercedes E, G, M, CL and series 3, 5, 6, and 7 of BMW. It creates brand loyalty for one and they hold their value when trading up with their respective companies. Cadillac is the only premium car manufacture that does not have an entry level line they are struggling to capture the market. Hence why you see younger people in their CTS commercials.

From a marketing standpoint, Apple needs the entry level iPhone to prevent churn (someone leaving for a cheaper handset when their premium iphone has been dropped and or deemed inoperable) and two, to put this in the teenagers hand with the hopes of them buying up in the future.

      • therealjjohnson

        Nice argument.

      • Gorgonphone

The BMW 320i is thei new basic econo model

      • Kaptivator

One could justify your point with an entry level 3 series starting around 32-35k. +1

      • Gorgonphone

I have an old 323i so the 320i is fhe oerfect upgrade for me

      • Kaptivator

I love the 3 series BMW, I like the handling and acceleration… Yes, they do produce the ultimate driving machine, however the inside is just plane to me.I have a MB GLK 350. But when its time, ill be seriously considering the X5.

      • Taf Khan

Think you missed the point… BMW and Mercedes release cars for different user groups. Some higher than others in price, but they never look over at ford compete on price.

      • Kaptivator

Ford’s Taurus is at the top if its vehicle line up starting at about 26700, followed by the Fusion and Focus. The CLA 4 door coup by Mercedes, is their entry level coup starting at 29900. If one were after the Mercedes brand, would you not invest the additional 3k to jump from Ford to Mercedes? The A class has not been around for as long as the E or C classes. So, do you really think that Mercedes is not looking to take a portion of the pie from your non luxury manufacturers and convert them to luxury? So in essence, Mercedes is looking at Ford and others to compete on price. Same as Apple is considered a premium product, however they are inching every category of their lineup with an entry level product. iPad to iPad mini, Mac Book Pro to Mac Book Air, etc. So why not the iPhone? From a marketing standpoint, its not about the customer I have, but the customer I can take. A marketers mind frame is to get you in the door with something you have always wanted but thought you couldn’t afford. Whats the difference in the budget iPhone for now and then the premium when its time for an upgrade? I think I was pretty spot on with understanding the point. No?

    • Gorgonphone

Steve is dead so you can expect to see alot more odd mover by apple in the coming years

  • Boss

I hated the iPhone 3G/S cause of the plastic it looks cheap like most Samsung’s garbage I only took Apple seriously with the iPhone 4 which looked sleek and sexy

    • Dominik Odobašić

It’s sad how people negatively associate plastic with overall quality of the device.

    • http://klikkit.co.uk/ Jake – Klikkit

The 3G and 3GS were much more comfortable phones, the only poor design aspect was the metal frame with the rubber rim that always bent

    • Saeed Ghattas

So don’t buy it. Just buy the premium iphone product and not the “budget” iphone.

      • Boss

Steve Jobs said he would NEVER bring out a “Junk” product and I’m afraid this “budget” iPhone looks nothing but a cheap plastic knock off.
it’s not that I’d buy it, it just makes Apple look desperate

      • Saeed Ghattas

Dont you worry about apple, they are not desperate!
They are selling more and more iphones even when its more expensive than other cheap plastic other “smartphones”.
And even its a plastic budget iphone, apple never compramise on quality!

      • Gorgonphone

Its does look quite cheap … I think the ipod tough 5g was a perfect design and build

  • Gipa

You guys are not getting anything Apple has never been a cheap company, never been never going to be, so don’t expect shit from them apple doesn’t care if you are can afford an iPhone they just want money everything they make it’s good and HQ but overpriced, don’t expect cheap things from Apple…Seriously.

    • Guest

Never know this budget iPhone might only come out in places like India and China I don’t see why the US would need it cause they’ve already most of the share

  • Rizky Ardi Nugroho

Iki wong-wong kok yo wagu..Nggawe gosip kok yo ketok nek ngapusine..Design karo warnane yo elek banget..Dadi ketok nek koyo dolanan..Aku yo ra bakal percoyo nek iki gaweane apple..sopo sing arep tuku jal? palingan mung dinggo ganjel lawang..ngisin-ngisini nek iki tenanan..

    • Taf Khan

Wha You Talkin About Willis…. .

      Er translate please.

  • Kenny Woodard

What are males supposed to buy? The only one even remotely acceptable would be the white, and I think it’s ugly.. I think they are all ugly and a big mistake if these release in the U.S.

Nobody wants a phone downgrade!.. and that’s what Apple is going to offer with that. And what’s the point of it being a little cheaper when there are better quality smartphones on the market from 2012? ( gs3, note 2 ) and by the time the budget one comes out, you will probably be able to get the HTC One and Gs4 for around the same price on contract.

    • Boss

Agreed but I’ve always hated the white iPhone as they look girly but I’d rather get a Nexus 4 than a budget iPhone

      • Kenny Woodard

I’d rather get several phones before a budget iPhone.

    • http://klikkit.co.uk/ Jake – Klikkit

you do realise that these aren’t the next step up from the 5 right? they are a ‘budget’ alternative, don’t get them confused with the 5s

      • Kenny Woodard

What’s the point in going backward when so many other companies are catching up with Apple? Nobody will want a “budget” iPhone, the point of having an iPhone, is to have THE iPhone.. That’s like ” look at my new phone! it has features from 2012 and has a plastic casing!! ” If you are going for less quality and price, you’re better off going Android..

      • Kaptivator

Maybe people on a budge? Maybe people that didn’t purchase the apple care and need another iOS device? Maybe tweens and teens who’s parents will not purchase a 600 dollar phone for them? I can continue…But I think you can get the point. Take a marketing class and pay attention closely to creating brand loyalty and capturing a new consumer with entry level products. Its working for BMW, Audi and Mercedes.

      • Kenny Woodard

        Why do people
Always give $600? You can get it on contract for 1/4 of the price. I’m talking about the difference in getting contract pricing and a budget iPhone would not much cheaper ( if I know Apple ) and you can already get great Android phones for cheaper than iPhone. That woul be better than a budget iPhone.

      • Kaptivator

People give the 600 price tag because thats what it cost for those who dont want to be tied down by a contract or for someone that is not up for renewal. Maybe they will offer it at 99 bucks on a 2 year instead of the premium at 199. Just a thought.

As far as android…A person that is tied into the apple eco system will have no benefit with the android platform.

Why cant people think beyond themselves and just say “Hey, the budget iPhone may not be for me, but it may appeal to someone else?” You do have cheap people that dont really care about what the software is housed in. Apple is about generating money, this will do that for developing markets and as an introductory handset.

And you skipped over the second part of my comment. TOO CAPTURE THE YOUNG MARKET and create brand loyalty. Its not about current sales, but future sales and creating brand loyalty to increase and maintain future customers. Think outside of yourself and put yourself in a corporate mind frame. If im trying to compete in China where everything is made of cheap plastic…why not make a cheap plastic phone to compete with other cheap plastic phones.. No?

      • http://klikkit.co.uk/ Jake – Klikkit

iPhone 5 release: £129 + £36 a month on a 24 month contract, that was the average price everywhere it was released.

iPhone 4/4s on iPhone 5 release, free/£69 respectively, and £20/£25 18 month contracts

These budget iPhones will probably be the same prices as the 4/4s were on the iPhone 5 release, but the difference, they wont be older phones, they will probably be released alongside the main phones.

A brand new phone is a lot more appealing than waiting 2 years to get a phone when all of your friends have the latest and greatest

      • Kenny Woodard

The 4 and 4s and obsolete right now. I’m using a 4. It’s slow and small and not very nice compared to newer phones. Like people have said, it’s for lower income countries anyways. I just don’t like it. I think you can get a much better phone for the same or not much more money. That’s all I’m saying.

      • http://klikkit.co.uk/ Jake – Klikkit

but for the people that want Apple devices (a lot of regular users, especially teens who want affordable apple devices) these will sell like hotcakes

The 4 and 4s is obsolete to you, but all iPhones are the same to the average ‘popular’ teenager who these are aimed at

    • Mohammed Sahib

This is for developing markets. Apple realized that those markets will get more mature in the future, so they want to take some foothold in them with budget alternatives.

      • Kenny Woodard

I understand that perspective too, but if it’s for these less developed economies, why is every website and YouTube blogger going so crazy about this? Rumours and leaked images everywhere.

      • Mohammed Sahib

Standard reaction to new apple products I guess. Over hyped before release, trash talked after.

  • Heitor Castro 

Ugly colors when applied on this glossy plastic cover. I still don’t know why go back to iPhones made of plastic.

  • leart za jmi

they don’t look so bad….maybe the black should be fine for me

  • Jaye

If there is a black version, I’ll buy it for the hell of it.

  • Evad3_Me

Damn man, none of you get it.

This alleged budget iPhone isn’t for you in America, UK, Germany, or some other well established country. It’s for emerging, developing markets such as India and China where everything is cheap, therefore, they need something that will compete there.

The Apple you know and love, with it’s high-quality, well-designed, and classy look is not going anywhere, they are just having an “insurance plan” so to speak. The 5S will be the next step up. The budget iPhone is for people that can’t afford the 5 or the 5S and end up buying cheap, shitty Android phones.

    • Kaptivator

Some people cant look at it that way.

  • benz_85

Only if it’s $210 and factory unlocked.

  • onebyone_

Made in China The new Ziphone

  • Matthew

I wouldn’t buy one of those colored ones. I hope they make black and white variants also!

  • batongxue

    Here we go again.

These leakings would be as accurate as last year.

  • Shubham Goyal

Why am I seeing five colors in the first picture when the article mentions only 4? :O

  • n0ahcruz3

I dont like these plastic glossy colored iphones. And im from a developing country :P. id rather buy a cheap android or an ipod touch 5.
