New in iOS 7: Clock app icon now displays real time

By , Jun 11, 2013

clock icon live

As we continue to dig through all of the new features and UI changes in iOS 7, we’ve come across a minor, yet interesting, detail. It looks like the Clock app icon now displays the correct time, and has an animated second hand.

At least, in all of Apple’s screen shots it shows the correct time. Notice in the image above how the time on the Clock icon matches up with the time in the status bar. But I can’t for the life of me get it to work on my iPhone 4S…

I’ve tried everything from turning off the ‘Set Automatically’ option in the Settings app, to switching time zones. But my iOS 7 Clock icon still seems to be a good 5 hours behind my Status bar clock. At least the second hand moves.

I imagine this will get fixed in a future iOS 7 release, but it still strikes me as a bit odd. With the current time shown on the Lock screen, and other places in iOS, why did Apple feel the need to make the Clock app icon show realtime information?

Personally, I would have preferred a live Weather icon. But I’m guessing that would require resource-draining location data.

What do you think?

I’m in love with iOS 7. That’s all.

    • genXhippie

I’m still in love with a jb iOS. That’s all. ;-)

      • http://www.twitter.com/Namra297 Namra

        Good for you :)

      • babiloe

Wait for iOS 7 JB then

Maybe they just wanted to bring more life to the springboard, I personally would have loved a live weather icon like the tweak ‘weathericon’. They could have it where it checks the location every hour or every _ minutes and updates.

    • pegger1

weathericon is garbage, it only updates when you check the weather

  • batongxue

    Weather app is still static

    • genXhippie

      Yes, is that not pathetic?

      • batongxue

Personally I do not care about the weather app.
But they could have made it alive.

      • genXhippie

Perhaps, my point was simply, that it should have been implemented as was the clock icon.

    • https://twitter.com/N_2the_ATE Nate

It’s alive for me. Maybe a restart?

      • batongxue

Whoa! Really alive? Even after reboot? I am not planning to try iOS 7 now.

  • Evangeloz Tsalikidis

Thank God For “MEGA” & iOS 7.
    - apple servers were getting smashed.

  • iamnotfan

I just tried the Devoloper preview.
And in my point of view it’s very ugly

  • dinghow

    cant F ING Wait

  • Vipul Verma

It seems copied from LiveClock jailbreak tweak!?

    • genXhippie

That’s correct. Many of the new feature are already existing jb tweaks, that were copied. It would have been decent of Apple to acknowledge that imo.

      • Vipul Verma

I would prefer existing jailbroken iOS 6 to iOS 7. :)

      • genXhippie

Same here, bud. ;) I’m not updating my jb iP5 until iOS 7 is also jb.

      • Guest

Haha dat wud hav been fun srsly :D

      • pegger1

Just because it wasn’t in iOS before a tweak was made, doesn’t mean they hadn’t thought of it. Did you even watch their intro animation? 1000 no’s for every yes. It would be impossible for Apple to put in everything they want or everything people want, all at once. So they have to pick and choose the features to include at a quality level they’re satisfied with.

      • genXhippie

If true, it would have been more impressive to give the weather icon “life”, as opposed to the clock, since the status bar is always displaying time anyway, imo. What does it matter if one thought of something, and had not acted on it/ expressed it? Nothing. Meaning comes through forms of expression/actions. If none, than there is essentially nothing. It (perhaps Apple’s supposed ideas) counts for null.

      • Brandon Weidema

Do you really think the engineers and designers are like “Ok, time for some new features for iOS7, lets browse through Cydia”

      • genXhippie

Seem that way, does it not?

    • Ian

Yeah, but it’s done better. LiveClock jumped every second, but this one is a smooth clock, where the red one just is constantly moving, instead of jumping. I like it.

      • No

Apple didn’t do everything better that they copied, though. For example, it’s obvious the copied multitasking from webOS, but they made it a lot worse.

      • genXhippie

        Point well taken. ;-)

  • Michael Hulet

I had the same problem on my 5th Generation iPod touch.. I just made sure I was set to the right time zone and rebooted, and now it displays the correct time

  • genXhippie

“Personally, I would have preferred a live Weather icon. But I’m guessing that would require resource-draining location data.” (from article above)

If this was the actual case, as with other features give the users the option to to turn it on/off then. This way, your so called, “resource-draining location data” is a non-issue. No excuses (Apple) really, imo.

    • Chris Longden

I’ve noticed the weather updates in the background on my i5 so hopefully they might add this before public release

    • pegger1

It wouldn’t necessarily be a location hog. I keep location off for the weather app and just keep my city as the first one. I don’t need it to keep checking location if I’m always in the same place. They could make the icon work the same way.
The extra battery drain would then only come from having to fetch updated weather, however often that would be.

  • Kadhir Anand

Sad that we had this article now and not before. This is 2013. Not 2007

  • solidsephiroth

Hey Cody, since you’re using iOS7, does it have quick compose/quick reply?

    • Melvco

there isn’t as of right now. We’re hoping it gets added before public release this fall.

      • rasengan720 .

excuse me sorry to interrupt here but do you have any idea if an iphone 4s updated to ios 7 beta without a developer account can be restored to ios 6.1.3? i accidentally updated and now i can’t use the phone.. what’s worse is it’s my father’s phone :(

      • solidsephiroth

I really hope so, because the only reason left for me to jailbreak iOS 7. I can live without other little things but, bitesms is huge for me.

  • rasengan720 .

when is jeff gonna review the ios 7 beta!!

    • bllackghost

the best for the last! wait him for next iPhone generation event to preview the iOS 7 final =)

      • cmmb

  • inf3rn0

If only all the iOS 7 icons were as beautiful as the ones in the first two rows..just my opinion. Gamecenter icon looks terribly out of place (retains the glossiness of previous iOS).

  • Scott

Are you really going to look at the analog clock app for the time or are you going to look at the digital time at the top of the screen? I am going to go with the topof the screen.
They did that but they can’t put the current local temp on the icon for weather app? Again another thing they wasted time on instead of putting time into other things they need to spend time on. Atleast we got toggles FINALLY and Siri can do some more stuff.

While don’t like the look of iOS7 I will probably upgrade but not until there is a JB for it since my current JB pretty much gives me what I need as far as tweaks to iOS.

  • naem tarabichi

well they could have done the same to the safari as a live compass in ur homescreen , or the weather app .. as well as adding widgets to desktop and letting u to send files via bluetooth ftp .. and being able to choose which screen is your homescreen .. camera app a more pro features .. allowing user access to file system .. and many more things ….

  • rosssimpson

Mine show the correct time on both icons and digital at the top?

  • iPhone Hrvatska

Is it possible to change toogles in Control Center?

    • felixtaf

No… There is no option to configure… Jus an option to keep it on/off in lockscreen…

  • milksop held

    Just a gimmick imo

  • iPhone Hrvatska

I still miss Protube, gonna be back to 6.1.2 after a while

    • http://www.twitter.com/Namra297 Namra

From what i know you can only come back to ios 6.1.4 or 6.1.3

      • Valnomien

wrong 6.1.3 has been closed Apple no longer signing that
if you guys did not backup your shsh or worse did not upgrade to the beta from 6.1.4 you could be screwed

  • Jason Duong

Some of the colour tones of the app icons irritate my eyes (insert asian joke here).

I kinda liked the old app icons. :S

    • diggitydang

I agree. But I am also Asian… Hahahaha

  • The Shoonchy 

    It’s a nice tidbit, I like it

  • Chris Garcia

    I knew it!

  • iPhone Hrvatska

For all iPhone 4, 6.1.2 (ONLY) users out there who want to try iOS 7 BETA 1:
    1. Save your SHSH with iFaith and create custom signed 6.1.2 ipsw.
    2. Download iOS 7 and install it if you have UDID registration
    3. If you are not happy with iOS 7 you can go back to 6.1.3 and from there to your custom created signed 6.1.2 and then rejailbreak

  • Javier Martinez

It’s probably apple being apple and making things “look right”. Just like if all of the screenshots were to show a phone with full signal strength.

  • leart za jmi

seems like a great iOS, just the icons are terrible, very ugly.. never seen such a ugly icon design ever on Apple, why?

    • Tonka Thor

I think what’s throwing off the icon design is the white background. The idea is actually kind of cool how all these little elements fit uniformly into this tiny little area. But the bright colors on a white background is just too much.

      • leart za jmi

i am a senior designer, i know what i am saying..
just imagine, this interface, which is perfect, with the actual style of icons!!

      • leart za jmi

in the sub conscience, flat design, is or minimalist, or cheap

    • http://www.twitter.com/Namra297 Namra

They’ve added Colors to ur life :p

  • Chris Longden

the status bar and clock icon are exactly the same on my iphone 5

  • Dylfo

Does te new is slow the 4s at all?

  • PereZ!

Maybe it’s just me, but this colorful iOS 7 reminds me of android kinda like GS3/4 anyone else?

  • soccerkrzy

If it’s a straight rip off of LiveClock then it will be a tremendous battery drain…iOS7 just looks worse and worse the further you dive into it.

    • No

You are correct. If you really take a look at all the ‘new’ features, you can easily see all of these features are already found via Android, webOS, and Cydia.

  • Royce Otero

Lol I had my clock telling the right time for months. That came from a jailbreak tweak.

  • Tonka Thor

What I want to know is…does iOS 7 have quick reply and quick compose for messages? That is a real deal breaker for me.

    • Zachary Sloane

same. I’m not getting an iPhone 5S unless it has this feature. I’m not losing my jailbreak for some meh upgrade.

  • iPhone Hrvatska

I don’t see any animations on iPhone 4, also there is no wallpapers from the video, the wallpaper doesn’t move like in the video, the dock is different than in the video, I mean WTF????

    • No

It’s a marketing scheme. Apple won’t implement these features to make you feel like your device is inferior, so you will want to go and buy a newer device.

If you call Apple support and ask them why, they will simply tell you it’s because the device can’t handle it, when it easily could.

  • AMB_07

Keep the icons free of animations. If they want animations so bad why don’t they just implement widgets?

  • simieski

Still don’t see the point in this when you have digital clock in status bar??

    • Gorgonphone

      its cool

  • Ian

Anybody else have this issue? my time is correct, which is EST, but the clock on the home screen analog clock says PST. Yes, it’s beta, expect bugs, but is anybody else having this?

    • Micaiah Martin

Nope. Mine is working just fine. Try changing the time and reboot!

      • Ian

I’m a tech whiz (at least for Apple and Microsoft) and I didn’t even think of rebooting!! Thanks for suggesting that. It worked. :)

  • dedegarrido

Can we change the toggles in iOS 7 control center? can I disable it from the lockscreen and disable the notification center from LS as well?

  • Benedict Langer

Jeff, do you know if CarrierEditor works with the iOS 7 Beta 1?

  • Gorgonphone

    yaaawwwwwnnnnnn

  • anas hubbi

i can`t change my time zone manually in IOS 7
    but still LOOOVE it

  • No

Ok, this feature has been available on Cydia for more than a year, yet again, nothing new here. iOS fails to impress, and implements old features that should’ve literally been implemented years ago.

Most of these features Apple implemented are features that were impressive 2 years ago, so Apple is still behind the game. If anyone actually believes the ‘most advanced mobile OS’ tagline, you must be fooling yourself.

  • Jesus Numa Aguilar

Put the city closest to you on top and restart your idevice

  • Jesus Numa Aguilar

    Worked for me

  • Zoople

It would be nice if in the Clock app if you could, oh i don’t know, actually SEE THE TIME!! Why doesn’t the top bar change to suit what is on the screen? insanity.

  • QFord Lin

I love this new feature. I am a iOS developer, anyone know how to do it in our own App?
