Apple makes it sound like a life or death scenario when developers decide to install iOS 7 beta on a test device. In fact, it’s always done so with its beta releases. In the notes for iOS 7, Apple states that “Devices updated to iOS beta can not be restored to earlier versions of iOS.”

The thing is, that simply isn’t true. I’ve always been able to successfully downgrade my firmware in the past for a beta test device, and I’ve confirmed that the process still works perfectly fine on iOS 7. In fact, it’s extremely easy to downgrade your firmware from iOS 7 to iOS 6.1.3; it doesn’t even require any special tricks or techniques like some downgrades do. Check inside as I walk you through the extremely simple step-by-step process for downgrading iOS 7 back to iOS 6.1.3.

Video walkthrough

To downgrade your firmware from iOS 7 beta to iOS 6.1.3, do the following:

Step 1: Download the iOS 6.1.3 (or 6.1.4 for the iPhone 5) to your desktop from our downloads page.

Step 2: connect your iOS device running iOS 7 beta to your computer.

Step 3: open iTunes, select your device, and option+click (shift+click in Windows) on the Restore button.

Step 4: point to the firmware you downloaded in step 1.

Step 5: watch as your device restores back to iOS 6.1.3 successfully.

Note: keep in mind that you may only downgrade to the latest publicly available firmware for iOS on an A5 device, even if you have SHSH blobs saved. For older devices like the iPhone 4, you may be able to downgrade to lesser firmware if you happen to have your SHSH blobs saved.

So there you have it, an extremely simple method for downgrading back to iOS 6.1.3. No tricks or special techniques required. What do you think? If you’re running iOS 7, would you consider downgrading back to iOS 6.1.3?

  • David Gitman

Nah I will stay on iOS 7 πŸ˜€
And I always knew we can downgrading betas.

last time i downloaded a beta version apple barred my phone when the full version came out, I was even a member of the development program, I had to go into recovery mode to fix it! so be careful πŸ™‚

      • HumXa Ch

i also got into recovery mode as my previous software was crashed on updating ….must create backup

    • SweKiwi

I found it way, way to buggy.
Freakisly irritating to be at the gym and Spotify keeps crashing now and then.

How to upgrade to ios 7 without Developer Account?

    • inc188

It’s currently possible update to iOS 7 without having your iPhone’s UDID registered in a developer account.

To perform the update you must get a hold of the iOS 7 ipsw, press and hold the Option key (Shift for Windows) and click Update in iTunes. Select the iOS 7 ipsw from the popup window to install.

It’s unclear why this is working. Only iPhone devices registered by developers are supposed to be able to install beta firmware. Perhaps Apple took down this check since its servers are being flooded at the moment.

      • Benan Nabu

Thank you alot, but can you give me the ipsw download link? Because i downloaded and it shows error 3014

      • inc188

      • Benan Nabu

        Yes torrent.

It only works if your UDID is registered.

      • sup.

no it doesnt. Repeat IT DOES NOT NEED UDID right now.

dont need UDID for IOS 7 .

download from any where u can google it and after download just press and hold shift and click on check for update in itunes load the ipsw and enjoy the IOS 7 . i install IOS 7 beta 2 on iphone 4 100% working

      • mehrab

        Sure about that?

      • inc188

        yes. 100%

Make sure u use UPDATE and not restore

      • Tawil

What happens if you use restore?

      • inc188

        wont activate

      • msukunda

how do I downgrade cuz I accidently hit restore

      • Tawil

You have to restore it in recovery mode

      • inc188
      • Jacob S

It is reported that if you have the proper firmware file for your device, it will work, but not sure for how long. Usually, beta firmware can be updated only if the UDID is registered to a developer’s account. Somehow, apple’s service is skipping this verification for now, enjoy as long as it lasts!

      • Jamie Tilden

I did this. It worked with iOS 6 and iOS 5. I’ve never had a dev account. I think this is merely a loophole way of bypassing the need for dev. registration. You MUST hit UPDATE though, and not restore.

      • Luke

i pressed restore and now nothing works at all, any way to reverse it?

      • Er Kandarp Patel

        plz i need help

      • Er Kandarp Patel

pls pls help me ..i downgrade to 6.3.3 bt still wont activate πŸ™ plz what should i do

      • Er Kandarp Patel

        ……rply me asasp

      • Jamie Tilden

Try going into DFU mode: connect iPhone to iTunes, hold power and home button at the same time until phone shuts off and you see the “connect to iTunes” sign. Then try restoring.

      • Er Kandarp Patel

        i doo .. as u say .but still can;t activate πŸ™

      • Mattos

what version do you have to use for this

      • Jamie Tilden

I haven’t tried updating to the latest iOS 7.1 betas (I’ll keep my jailbreak for now) but you usually need the latest iTunes to do this, which is 11.1.4

      • Jamie Tilden

Well I clearly said not to press restore. Hit UPDATE. Jesus.

      • cjg13

when i press “Update” it now says that it will verify with Apple…..will this still work without UDID?

      • Jamie Tilden

Yeah it will still work. It said that for me too. Don’t worry.

      • cjg13

here we go……says “waiting for iPhone”….how long should this all take?

      • Jamie Tilden

About as long as it normally takes to update to basically any firmware. It’s nerve-racking, I know, but let it run its course.

      • cjg13

just finished!!!!….all things seem to be working fine. Anything i should know about? do i need to download the “find my iphone” package? if so how can i install it?

        thanks for all your help

      • Jamie Tilden

Find My iPhone is the same as it’s been before. Apple hasn’t updated any of their App Store apps for iOS 7 yet.

      • Puck Darlington

yea easy just put your phone in dfu mode and shift restore to ios 6.13 thats it simpel..

      • Mads Teland

When it updates to iOS 7, it will bypass setup screen πŸ˜‰

      • Ricky

I hope this is for aling time because im on ios7 and if a new beta is out i dont want to downgrade to ios6

      • Wassim Omais

When you do the update, the validity of the device with respect to the user (user, developer, etc) isn’t checked. When you restore, it is. The trick has worked for a long time and they haven’t got around to fix it.

      • Bryan

Is there any way to downgrade after accidentally clicking restore? I keep getting the message saying I’m not registered. Can I sign up somewhere and not pay the fee for a developer account?

      • sbailey4

Did you try the DFU restore? Not a standard restore mind you.

  • Jonathan

Could you do a guide for restoring to a jailbreakable version? (for iPhone 4-like devices)

  • Considering it… hopefully Apple will release an update soon. iOS 7 is quite buggy, at this stage. I’m getting lots of app crashes, and my phone has been really hot since installing it.

    • Jensen Hamblin

Do you have battery drain also? What device?

      • iPhone 5 64gb. Yes, but I was having battery drain issues with the phone prior to the iOS7 install too, while it was jailbroken. I think it might be related to the Moves app, which I’m kinda addicted to now and won’t uninstall.

      • Arya Kalashi

Well iOS 7 is raping my battery..

      • Jensen Hamblin

I’m on 4S and there is little lag and messages is not very smoove. I will probably downgrade, I’m just disappointed to loose my jailbreak over this.

      • Abu Bakkar

Jensen, which ios u were having? was it 6.1.3 Untethered jailbreak? mine is 4s on 6.1.3 but battery draining n becoming hot often.

      • Jensen Hamblin

I had iOS 6.1.2 jail broken. Then I upgraded to iOS 7 beta 1, had battery draining issues, lots of bugs. So I downgraded to 6.1.3 and it’s super fast. No problems besides not having a jailbreak

      • Wzh

How do you even downgrade to ios 6? I can’t.

    • I had the exact same problem. Bugs a plenty and a really hot phone with no battery life… but as soon as the new beta is out I’ll install it too.

    • inc188

The key here is UPDATE not restore

      • Luke

anyway to reverse after pressing restore?

      • Er Kandarp Patel

        pplz … me i restored πŸ™

      • Corey

Actually since apple is still leaching IOS 6.1.3 you dont need a developers account. -6/14/13- and info came from my self getting stuck in the iOS 7 . @disqus_9d6QmUa4cy:disqus yes but im not sure what i did but i do remember like doing a dfu then in itunes hopefully you some how did a thing should pop up and say restore to 6.1.3 and goodluck because i cant garuntee anything cause i dont remember anything but main pparts

Did you notice the new iTunes logo when it plugging cool is color full xD at 1:25 nice iTunes logo

  • David J Delgado

Another way to do it is:

    1. Turn off iPhone (Make sure iPhone is unplugged from Mac/PC)

    2. Hold ‘home’ button as you simultaneously plug it back into your Mac/PC

    3. Don’t let the button go until Mac recognizes the iPhone as needing to be restored, or the iPhone shows the new iTunes icon on the screen

    • Chris Matsumoto

      it keeps ios7 πŸ™

    • Paul

      thanks worked for me πŸ™‚

With iPhone 6.1.2 possible to downgrade ??

    • pegger1

      As per the article above.
Note: keep in mind that you may only downgrade to the latest publicly available firmware for iOS on an A5 device, even if you have SHSH blobs saved. For older devices like the iPhone 4, you may be able to downgrade to lesser firmware if you happen to have your SHSH blobs saved.

      • Grande PHD

iPhone 5 is an A6 device, then I can’t downgrade anymore?? Please, help me!

  • Jeffrey

Why not just use recovery mode? iTunes will automaticly download the latest public iOS for you

    • Joseph Effendy

nope. Just tried it. Gives me an error.

      • Jeffrey

Strange .. I’ve done it multiple times monday when iOS7 wouldn’t activate

  • Ryan James Christensen

So if I try to get to iOS 7 by clicking Update instead of Restore and it activates. I can downgrade to iOS 6.1.3? And this is without registering my UDID

  • Liam Mulcahy

    the iPhone 4 can’t run iOS 7

  • Cody

Selling UDID Activations for $5 ONLY!

    Email me at

    Only accepting PayPal!

    • Jamie Tilden

LOL. Don’t go for this. Not worth it. 1) Download iOS 7 beta 1 ipsw (torrent it somewhere). 2) Restore your phone to its current iOS (6.1.3 for most, 6.1.4 for iPhone 5) and set up as NEW iPhone. 3) Hold the ‘option’ key down in iTunes (make sure your phone is connected) and click UPDATE (NOT RESTORE). 4) Wait for iOS 7 to install and it will bring you to the home screen. Everything should be fully functional from there.

      • Mattos

can this work for iTunes 11.05

      • Jamie Tilden

Yes it should, but you’ll want the latest iTunes if you’re updating to the latest iOS 7.1 betas.

      • bob

        No it won’t

  • Ricky

    Up upgrading now haha

  • Zack Gurevitz

How can you downgrade iPhone 4? iOS 7 is super buggy and slow. Keyboard halfway works sometimes and my dock is a solid grey color..?

  • Chris Tangler

when you gain so many popular jailbreak features on the new iOS 7 why would you downgrade to no jailbreak on 6.1.3 if you have an i5…if you take the plunge and upgrade you may as well keep it, and wait for the ios 7 jailbreak 5 months from now, even if you don’t really like it

    • ghulamsameer

This is a beta release of iOS 7, so it still have many bugs. People probably want to restore back to 6.1.3 because there are probably features on the beta that are not working or not working well.

      • Tomasz Borychowski

Yes. I just installed 7 and it’s overheating my 4S. Also keyboard is completely blank in some apps (e.g. contacts/phone) so I’m downgrading. It’s still beautiful πŸ™‚

  • Jordan Carter

So if you update to iOS 7 you can downgrade to 6.1.3 but you cant downgrade to 6.1.2 even if you have your SHSH blobs saved??? Or did I understand that wrong? I’m hoping I did.

  • iPhone User

Do you loose your apps, settings etc when downgrading? Upgrading kept everything but I don’t know what downgrading will do.

Also, when apple releases the official iOS 7 later this year, will we be able to easily upgrade from iOS 7 Beta to iOS 7 or will we have to downgrade to iOS 6.1.3 then upgrade to iOS 7?

    Thanks mate. Works great.
    iOS7 is a piece of c***

I use iphone 5 and I have upgraded to IOS7 yesterday. I want to go back to 6.1.4. But apple’s developer site doesn’t have IPSW for 6.1.4. Instead it has 6.1.3 IPSW. Most of the videos I saw have used 6.1.3 for iPods and 6.1.4 for iPhone5. Can i downgrade my iphone 5 to 6.1.3? Is apple still signing firmware 6.1.3 for iphone 5?

  • Zeshan Rodrigues

hey im on 6.1.3 right now…should i update to 6.1.4 first and then “check for updates” to ios 7? or can i jus “check for update” directly to ios 7

Decided to downgrade as the messages seem buggy for me (not showing the latest message in the list of conversations, and not showing a new one if they weren’t there previously). Slightly annoying. Only bug I found really

Some of it seemed nice though, looking forward to the official release.

  • Tawil

You don’t even have to do all of those steps. For me, I just turned off my phone and held the home button and plugged it in to my computer to put it into recovery mode. Then you just restore it. But if you back up your phone on iOS 7, you can’t put that backup onto and lower iOS
