iOS 7 brings brand new Control Center with toggles

By , Jun 10, 2013

Control Center

Now that Apple has formally announced a Jony Ive-ified iOS 7 (“it’s like having a new phone, but one you already know how to use,” said Tim Cook), executives here on stage at San Francisco’s Moscone West are telegraphing the key features of iOS 7. One of such handy additions is an all-new Control Center. So, what does it do?

Control Center gives you quick access to the controls and apps you always seem to need right this second. Just swipe up from any screen — including the Lock screen — to do things like switch to Airplane mode, turn Wi-Fi on or off, or adjust the brightness of your display. You can even shine a light on things with a new flashlight. Never has one swipe given you so much control.

As the name suggests, Control Center puts together your most often used toggles from Settings into one view that’s accessible anywhere in the system.

Control Center on iPhone 5

Swiping up from the bottom of the device brings up a gorgeous new overlay with handy switches for Airplane mode, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, Sleep and access to more toggles in the Settings app.

You can also adjust your brightness and volume level, control your media with buttons to sip to previous or next and the play/pause button.

Right below thse are controls for AirPlay and AirDrop.

Aligned right across the bottom are app-specific icons to access your Camera app, Calculator, Alarm clock (hopefully, these can be configured).

Oh, and Control Center now gives you access to an all-new flashlight functionality so no more fiddling with the Camera app to enable LED flash.

Jailbreak tweak developers won’t like Control Center, I think.

So, what do you think of the new Control Center?

    The back ground looks ugly

    • Gość

This new iOS looks awful and ugly…

      • Jordan

really… really…? u wait years begging them to change ios, then u complain? it looks gorgeous. and you will get used to it, and prob end up loving it

      • Hyr3m

It’s fugly… it looks like a “Miami 1980s” theme… New icons suck… At least they stole the right ideas functionality-wise from Android…

    • Kamrul

Yeah it does, it doesn’t look iOS

      • inf3rn0

How can iOS not look iOS?

      • Kamrul

I dont say the whole OS, just the blurry bit

    • mrloko

you can set the background..and the whole effect will come according to it..even the control centre

    • Anon Ymous

It looks like its the stock wallpaper blurred and distorted, so it’s probably customizable.

  • Piyush

awesomeeeeee , finally jailbreak gave some help to apple in ideas ;)

    • jocastro

ummm, its more like stole them

      • mrloko

jailbreak tweaks are not registered stuff bro..so even if you copy..it doesnt matter..you should be happy that you can use stuffs without jailbreaking

      • Throndson

Yes, Apple stole. And guess what? That’s what their good at. They take what looks or acts terrible and makes it easy to use and beautiful.

      • Hyr3m

“We’ve always been shameless about stealing great ideas” -Steve Jobs

    • felixtaf

True. 3DBoard, LiveClock, Ncsettings (not complete), Air Blue Sharing, Card Switcher, Zephyr (not complete), iBlacklist etc

  • mhchehade

    Looks girly

    • mkOS

      I agree!

  • mav3rick

    Lego icon? Really!

Fast switches are awfully designed. BatteryDoctorPro or NC Settings are couple leagues above.

  • Muhammad

Hopefully, with activator you can how you open control center a different way cause I like using the zephyr swipe up to activate the multitask bar

  • Boss

Maybe Apple should hire people who make Jailbreak tweaks instead

  • Steve Jobs

the whole ui looks so cheap and ugly and i have to say THX GOD FOR JAILBREAKING!!!!!!!!

  • momerathe

    i hope it’s configurable.

  • Cameron Chao

they should have just copied the look of BlurredNCBackground directly.

    • CPVideoMaker

I agree that it shouldn’t be that blurry. Little less.

  • Dady King

Apple just failed to beat sbsetting and activator !!! Still I have to wait for jb.. Bz iPhone is just incomplete without saurik..

  • Dan

looks like the android notification center on touchwiz (not visually, the layout of it all). It’s good that IOS finally has this but I don’t like the look.

  • swingkat

    Is this an NCSettings killer?

    • dedegarrido

Not completely because it doesn’t have a data toggle

      • mrloko

maybe it will come in a couple of updates :P

      • Hyr3m

        /years

  • Rohaη

That’s not the background of the control center… he mentioned that the control center was semi-transparent

  • ShavontiLewis

wooooow. so much negativity. I think it looks fantastic and can’t wait for it to go live

  • Farbod

i think it looks pretty good… guys give apple a break look how much work has gone into this…

    • Hyr3m

How much work? Honestly… 1 person can easily redo all these icons in one week… As for the control center, they can just assemble already-existing code from here and there, tweak it a bit and it’s done… another week or two for one or two programmers…
The sheer amount of work put into this is really pathetic if you ask me…

  • Rowan09

It’s a great add-on and finally. Why would anyone complain it takes the background from whatever your viewing.

  • Bobdole

i m worried about the fact that you can access the notification center and the control center from the lockscreen… it’s not very good for privacy concerns…

    • Julian Williams

Im pretty sure that there are security measures you can apply to keep the nc from being shown in the ls.

      • Bobdole

the guy during the presentation had a password… so i hope there is something…

      • Julian Williams

yea it would be pretty stupid to show a new feature in Find My iphone then have a huge security flaw with the nc

      • Bobdole

yeah.. but security wise… before IOS 7 you had find my phone, but if you turn off the phone or take out the sim card it’s pretty much useless… this is a pretty dumb thing to do…

so it wouldn’t be the first screw up about security…

    • Throndson

Please do realize that iOS 7 is still in beta. I’m pretty sure Apple is concerned for your data and won’t let anyone access it without your permission.

      • Bobdole

With my comment, i was only hoping to have someone (a developper maybe) shed some light on that particular point, because the press conference did not have nearly enough information about that particular concern of mine :D

  • Judge

Jailbreakers have had this for how many years now…..

    • felixtaf

You have to jailbreak to get this b4.. Now u dont have to…

  • chiraagnt

Haters gonna hate haha.. iOS 7 is pretty awesome and kickass! Can’t wait for it to go live! Argh this fall come quickly!!

  • Michael Jay Delaney

Pretty soon we’re gonna be pulling “Center’s” from all over iOS.

    • LH2613

      Game center?

  • Grolubao

I hope there is a toggle for Data….

    • dedegarrido

That is what is missing…. I’m still going to jailbreak because of that, and intelliscreenX and some other features. But great thing they added useful things, now I won’t have something like 100 tweaks installed.

  • Girish

    this fall,,,means which month???
    i just cant wait!!

    • CPVideoMaker

      Register your UDID then.

      • Girish

        its slow right now,,,
        loads of traffic :)
        wil try later ;)

      • CPVideoMaker

I got mine registered now. just waiting for iOS 7 to be downloadable.

  • No

Something Apple should have implemented years ago. Just another ‘major’ feature Apple has basically stolen from jailbreak developers and Android. The next step for Apple is for their legal team to go around suing the people they stole the ideas from. Developers beware!

    • CPVideoMaker

Do you understand how Apple works? I think your username answers that.

      • Girish

        SHOT!! lol

      • No

By that do you mean they take ideas from other companies, barely change them, release them as their own, and sue the company that had the original idea?

      • CPVideoMaker

If it’s already Patented, they can’t. If not, and Apple patents it, they can. Or they charge the company a small fee per device. Or, the US can rule the Patent useless since stolen and no longer valid. Learn the system.

      • No

I do understand the system, but Apple literally copies most of it’s features from superior operating systems, then they sue the creators of it. Have you seen one of their latest patents? It’s a controller that is literally an exact replica of the Dualshock 3. Just because they patent something doesn’t mean they completely invented it. For example, their controller patent is a load of shit.

      • CPVideoMaker

Sony should have registered a patent then. lol

      • No

Are you kidding me? They do have a patent for it, and they have had a patent for it for years. Apple was still granted a patent for it. My point here, which you obviously do not see, is that the patent system isn’t always fair, and sometimes bullshit patents are granted, and boy, Apple sure does have a buttload of bullshit patents.

      • CPVideoMaker

The world isn’t fair. Live with it <3 :)

      • No

Congrats. I proved you wrong, so then you go against your original argument. Pretty typical.

      • CPVideoMaker

No, my argument “Do you understand how Apple works?” I have not deviated from it.

      • No

Then you try to prove your point further by mentioning the patent system. I prove how the patent system isn’t always fair, you give up on argument. That’s how it worked.

        Just give up.

      • CPVideoMaker

        What I did

        > Posted another funny reply.

I was trying to make a funny reply :/ -.- Not an argument. 3rd time today.

      • No

The fact that you think your replies were funny is pretty sad.

      • CPVideoMaker

I know, but I couldn’t care less :) I only keep replying since my phone keeps sending me notifications about you replying and I am just waiting for my UDID to be registered so I can test the iOS 7 beta. I am sorry if I caused you an inconvenience. I didn’t take this seriously. Can you forgive me? :)

      • No

Never. I will hold a grudge with you until the day I die.

      • CPVideoMaker

        Okay :) I don’t mind ^_^

      • No

Impossible. You have to take it seriously. I am a random person on the internet, therefore we are basically best friends.

      • Guest

My name Is Alfonso Torres and I live In San Diego, California. I own an iPhone 4 CDMA bad ESN. I am an atheist and gay. How about you?

      • No

Um, you might want to take down this comment. You really shouldn’t put all of your personal information out like this.

      • genXhippie

Perhaps, you should live with it, since you obviously condone unfairness. ;-)

    • mrloko

jailbroken tweaks are not registered..neither can apple sue them nor they can sue apple

  • Michel Franco

Looks really pretty and well designed but , my god… its too much “rainbow” btw i like even looking completely homo i like… NO HOMO

    • mrloko

it picks up your background image man…change it to black and it will go blackish ..understand ?

      • Michel Franco

yeap i see the icons blurred…

      • Gorgonphone

        no

  • Amad

to be honest i thought apple would come up with the same old crap, but this time I’m really excited. just wondering does air drop connect you to all users using ios7 over 3g, LTE or all connected to the same WiFi?

    • BoardDWorld

Just WIFI, only on new gen devices

  • nyangejr

so Apple intentionally put those capabilities in previous iOS’s but not let them out, allow the jailbreak community to hack and design, (and Android i heard), then release a new iOS with them in it but modified to a whole new level. The question was, ‘is Apple a designer or an inventor’?

  • Andrei Ghinea

I’m curious of something else. How many android themes will copy iOS 7 design?:))

  • Wamid

3G toggle is important. i hope it exists.. just so no one complains about the lack of it in the future..

  • Gorgonphone

    its ugly and lame

    • CPVideoMaker

      Not really :)

  • Marcus Hennings

I like the new toggles but The Swipe from the bottom will kill Zephyr dmn it;(

  • Tien Nguyen

This is the only part that I’m concerned in the new iOS. Translucency doesn’t appear very eye-catching here… Hope they’ll do something about it till the final release.

  • Maaz

Yeah the theme doesnt look good in pictures but i think it will look better in our devices

  • tim

i hope this isn’t the downfall of zephyr. id like to be able to disable control centre and continue to use ncsettings in the NC.

  • john

Great.. all we need now is a respring toggle. I wonder when it’ll show up.

  • bravo

    No data toggle??

    • Erikk Jimenez

      Airplane mode

  • makolpiyush

Before – I never liked the old UI so jailbroke and installed themes. Later started liking the original icons and UI and just installed a few basic tweaks from Cydia.

Now – There is not enough glamour left in jailbreaking for someone who just needs a simple phone that makes everyday use easy. Its already there in iOS 7. Certainly will miss the added functionality of Battery Doc, BiteSMS, Copic, etc. But most of it is there. I am not comfortable with the icons of iOS 7 but its not bad at all. Will get some used to and also the UI bugs throughout will be fixed in next couple of months.

It was a much needed move and I was counting on it. Not disappointed at all :) And no more Bumping :p

  • Franddy Núñez Galicia

That control center is not really a control center! Cause you are attached to what they put you to you over there and you cant change anything, the camera, calculator and clock apps down there are just a waste! they are already on the springboard! th flashlight is good! The rotation locker should be moved down there along with more usefull stuff instead of the ones mentioned before. Now on there up there on the “control center” they should give the option the change bettwen any toggle you want! same for those ones down there. The tap to tweet/post widget and the weather and stock widget should be back either on NC or CC. The new desig is too white! and the new multitasking switcher showl have a way to kill all apps at once!

Hopefully all those things I said can be solved by a jailbreak! :) so I think they wont be mad…

Everything is starting to look like windows 8. emphasis on ‘windows’. ftw
