T-Mobile iPhone 5

Following up its iPhone 5 pre-order earlier today, T-Mobile has begun rolling out a carrier update to unlocked iPhone customers on its network. The carrier is preparing to officially launch the popular handset next Friday.

We’d heard last week that the OTA (or over the air) update was going to include Visual Voicemail support and LTE support for compatible devices. But it looks like there’s more to it then that. Keep reading for the full details…

UPDATE: T-Mobile has pulled the support page from its website, leading us to believe all this was prematurely announced.

Here are the release notes for the update posted today in T-Mobile’s support portal:

-Visual Voicemail

-4G network indicator

-Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS)

-AWS LTE (T-Mobile and officially unlocked AT&T iPhone 5 only)

-HD Voice (T-Mobile and officially unlocked AT&T iPhone 5 only)

-AWS HSPA+ (T-Mobile and new 2013 AT&T iPhone 5 only)

-Auto configures MMS settings

-Auto configures Personal Hotspot settings

-Auto configures APN settings for LTE connectivity

T-Mobile says that in order to install the update properly, you’ll need a T-Mobile-branded or officially unlocked GSM iPhone, you’ll need to be on the latest version of iOS, and—here’s the fun part—your phone cannot be jailbroken.

So it sounds like the carrier is implying that if you have a jailbroken iPhone 5 on iOS 6.1.2, you can’t install this carrier update. But we’d be interested in testing that theory, as it says the update “won’t change your software version.”

Regardless, this update is well worth installing for anyone with an iPhone on T-Mobile’s network—particularly those with an iPhone 5. The carrier has begun rolling out its LTE network, and it should be in all major cities later this year.

Have you installed the update on your unlocked iPhone? Tell us about it in the comments below!

Is there a way to install this update in jailbroken iphone 5

    • I was able to install the update on my jailbroken iPhone 5.

      • what are the settings for mms now? do you know APN for LTE setup as well? My mms was affected and cant find settings to receive pics

    • yes mine worked iphone 5 catch up automatically

  • Luis a

What about the iPhone 4S on Tmobile?

    • Only for iPhone 5

      • Luis a

Sucks my gfs unlocked 4S acts up sometimes figured an update from Tmobile would help.

      • TonyVee73

It seems to be available on all iPhone on 6.1.x.

      • Bruce Lee

It’s also for 4S, T-mobile pulled it, so you’ll have to wait.(Phone can’t have a JB either.) This guy’s just a dumbass who makes assumptions and doesn’t read posts from SEBASTIEN of all people.(Talking about Jakulic)

      • Luis a

Lol thanks!! Idk if I wanna pull her 4S off the jailbreak. Love my I5 jail broken… Decisions.

      • My iPhone is jailbroken and I received the OTA update.

      • No this carrier update is for any iPhone tmobile user, yes the LTE is only for the 5 the rest is for the 4s and some things for the 4

      • Correct 🙂

      • This is also for the iPhone 4 and 4S. I verified with a T-Mobile rep

    • Milad Khahil

First this is a carrier update not a software update , all you have to do is go to Settings/General/
About and there you should get the new carrier update pop up , and it should change from carrier 14. to 15.

  • Anyone give us the carrier bundle? How can I update since the evasion killed OTA?

    • It kill OTA only but the Carrier update usually fine.

  • still see “3G” on the status bar. i lost my jailbreak so it should update it by now

    • TonyVee73

Is LTE available in your area?

      • Not yet but 4G, yes, I believe. Shouldn’t I see the LTE toggle at least even if my area isn’t available? I’m in NYC btw.

    • Go to settings, general, cellular. There you should have LTE toggle.

      • Nope still only see 3G toggle. Rebooted a couple time as well

    • waaytooez

me too! why is that? It looks ugly and outdated, i want the 4g indicator! help!

  • How do I get this. I have iPhone 4S 6.1.3 non jailbroken.

    • Only iPhone 5

      • Oh.. I need this on iPhone 4s as well:(

      • ghulamsameer

It’s not just 5. It’s for every iPhone on iOS 6.1.x

      • Not, only iPhone 5 has LTE chip

      • ghulamsameer

He’s not talking about LTE. There’s many other features that pertain to other iPhones.

      • so can you please help me how do i get it. Its not showing up on my iphone.

      • ghulamsameer

I’d love to help, but it looks like the update is being delayed, so no one currently has it.

  • TonyVee73

If I update my iPhone 5, will I no longer be able to connect to T-Mobile’s 3G network?

    • not true you will be able to connect to it’s 3G network but it won’t say 3G it will say 4G but when on the real 4G LTE you will see it say LTE.

      • TonyVee73

I wasn’t implying, I was asking. Sorry for the confusion.
        Thanks, you’ve answered my question.

      • I know : ) sorry about the not true part, shouldn’t have wrote that never thought you where implying my fault.

  • chjode

“it sounds like the carrier is inferring” should read “it sounds like the carrier is implying.” The subject of a sentence implies, the reader infers.

    • Just like its implied that your a dick but someone else could infer that your an ass too.

  • chjode

As someone with a factory unlocked iPhone 5 on T-Mobile, I’m going to sit this out for a few days as I don’t want to affect my jailbreak.

  • The update is not showing up on my iPhone 4S. How do I get it. I have iOS 6.1.3 and its not jailbroken. Please someone help

  • A few things to clear up the confusion. This is a CARRIER update, not an iOS update. So don’t expect iTunes or your iPhone settings to tell you a new version of iOS is available because that is not how it works.

This carrier update will be pushed by T-Mobile. If, and only if, you have an iPhone with a T-Mobile account, you will get notified that a carrier update is available on your phone, which will let you install a new profile in the settings of your phone.

If you want to look it up manually, go to Settings > General > About. If an update is available, a prompt should pop up. Note that it might take a while to show you the carrier update, so don’t freak out if you don’t see it right away (maybe try a reboot – it never hurts).

If you don’t have T-Mobile, then you won’t get this update.

Apparently, installing the update on an iPhone 4 or 4S will show the 4G indicator when on the refarmed network. Additionally, this should allow iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S users on T-Mobile to enjoy MMS and Visual Voicemail

    • Yeahh I installed it on my unlocked iPhone 4 and it did nothing.

      • so you didn’t get visual voicemail or mms that sucks

    • For 4 and 4S users, it will show a 4G indicator on the refarmed network, that would be the only reason I believe.

      • Thanks for the heads up. It should also give MMS and Visual Voicemail support

      • I have yet to get the update on my unlocked 4S.

    • Bruce Lee

Other than dat visual voicemail as well. (Still unsupported on older phones?)

    • Derek

I have an iphone 4 factory unlocked on tmobile and I cant get it to pop up

    • TonyVee73

I’m assuming I can only do this on un-jail broken iPhones. Is that correct?

    • I know you don’t work for T-mobile but do you have any idea why my iPhone 5 still hasn’t gotten that update? It’s officially unlocked by att in January and I lost my jailbreak having to restore it and live in NYC where support 4G so far, I believe. And i have a non contract prepaid t-mobile 4G plan. I’ve been rebooting my iPhone many times over today. I even called tmobile and they said they will refresh my network or something and also told me to reboot. Still see “3G” on status bar:(

      • ACI

It seems the update will be available on Apr 12th.

      • In NYC you mean.

    • What exactly do you mean by T-mobile account.

    • Milad Khahil

MMS has been working on the iPhone 4S if you know the right MMS settings , Only Visual Voicemail wasn’t working …FYI …

    • what are the MMS settings i got the update and cant receive pics

  • I installed the LTE carrier plist hack and I’ve just reverted back to the stock one I backed up. Gonna see if I can get this official package to pop up in my itunes.

    • Looks like my iPhone 5 on 6.1.2 isn’t picking up the update. :/

    • Phillip Esho

Are you talking about the hack thats on cydia that hacks the phones settings from ifile to make lte/4g work? if yes can you please explain how to reverse it because last time i tried i had no internet service so i had to put the hack back in to get 4g

      • Yes. I simply renamed the hacked plist file to “xxx.plist.mod” and renamed my old file back to “xxx.plist.” The result was me rebooting twice to restore 3G/EDGE connectivity. If it doesn’t work for you, reset your network settings using iOS’s option to do so, after you remove the modded plist file of course.

  • Zoro

does this help the reception? My signal always drop 1-2 bars or no service.
    Let me know

    • Marvin

  • TonyVee73

Also, will this work on iPads on T-Mobile’s network?

  • Michael

I’m still not able to get this on my 4s. Anyone else have luck doing ota?

  • Shazim

Has anyone actually received the update??

  • T.LIN

Who has already received the update from tmobile..?

  • Antzboogie

T Mobile doesnt’t support Jailbroken phones? Wow then I can not support T Mobile!

  • Can i install these in my verizon iphone 5

    • Unfortunately no. The prerequisites state that your iPhone has to be either the T-Mobile or an officially unlocked GSM version i.e. the factory unlocked version or an unlocked AT&T version. The Verizon iPhone is considered CDMA even though it is unlocked and can connect to GSM networks.

      • I don’t think that’s right. Even if it has a CDMA radio, it’s still officially unlocked for GSM networks. Even the T-Mobile document differentiates different features that will only work for the AT&T model iPhone 5, implying that the other features will still work for models like the Verizon model. You should still be able to get auto-configured APN settings for MMS, a “4G” HSPA+ network indicator, and Visual Voicemail support, even if the LTE bands are different. If you put an AT&T Nano SIM into a Verizon iPhone 5, it does all of those things for the AT&T network, minus the LTE. Because AT&T is an official carrier. And that’s essentially what this update does, it makes T-Mobile an official carrier. So I don’t see why a factory unlocked Verizon iPhone 5 running on T-Mobile’s network won’t see this update.

      • My iPhone 5 is a verizon phone and is jailbroken and I received the OTA yesterday.

      • Dr. Javi

Do you get 4f on your Verizon factory unlocked ?

  • They must have canceled the update because both my phones still haven’t gotten it yet
Either way I wouldn’t give up my jailbreak just to get those extras I will just wait it out i have too many tweaks that make my phone the way I like it. Tmobile & Apple are full of

  • What if I have a prepaid non contract tmobile 4g service.how can I update to 4G/LTE?

  • I am using a factory unlocked iPhone 4s in Houston on t-mobile. Have not received the update yet, but I have been getting 3g service in areas I previously wasn’t. My download speeds have also increased from about 3mb to 5mb, and upload from 300k to 1.5mb in areas that I do get 3g. This is a considerable improvement. I also noticed yesterday at the end of the day that I still had more than 50% battery life remaining when I normally have about 20%. This is all without getting any carrier update. I was told by a trusted source at a tmo store that once the update is available I should see up to 12mb download (same as I was getting on 4g using a galaxy sII, and will get the 4g indicator). Have not been able to find out when the update will be avail other than the rumors of the 12th that have been posted. Just thought I would give some insight of status on a phone running in a market that has had 3g service since November. Looking forward to going into area I previously had no service to see if that changes (for those that are worried about no service areas, I go riding in areas that no-one has service so this is probably wishful thinking).

  • hi, did you guy get the update? WHy I didn’t yet. T-Mobile has delayed the update? A1428 unlocked iPhone5. No popup updates in About, No OTA popups whatsoever…

  • Today I was in a T mobile store and the manager told me that the update going to be available on April 9 but only A.TT iPhone, so I choose to take off because I have one of Verizon.

  • I have an unlocked iPhone 4S on T-Mobile USA and I have not seen a carrier update.

  • yes Sebastien you are absolutely CORRECT! thanks

  • DJMannyD

I just received my update when I went into settings>general>about this morning at 10am. The update just popped up and it then put my carrier setting to T-Mobile 14.1 and also I would like to add that I am on iOS 6.1 on my Verizon iPhone 5 and jailbroken. Now my visual voicemail works, I got the 4G indicator, I got the switch for LTE and also all my APN settings have been automatically setup except for the LTE settings, does anyone know what those should be at? My MMS works perfect and my calls do sound a little clearer.

    • I also just did the same after reading you comment. I went to settings>general>about and it popped up asking if i wanted to update. It also said carrier is T-Mobile 14.1. I am also jailbroken and have a VERIZON iPhone 5. Im still on Edge though.. Im located out of Gainesville, Florida.

    • what are the mms settings?

    • After updating my iMessage is no longer is working correctly.

  • Deion

I got the update for my Verizon iphone 5, but im still getting Edge speeds 🙁 someone please help me

    • Guest

This update is for TMobile not Verizon.

  • My Iphone 5 on iOS 6.12 is Jailbroken after over the air update everything is working but no visual voicemail.Ohhh i forgot im on t-mobile prepaid

  • Iftekhar Akter

SO I got the settings on my Iphjone 5, 6.1.3, and I immediately got 4G speeds from previously 3G speeds. However it still has bugs, I lost 4G last night and didnt have even 3G that i had before, only edge.

  • My iPhone 5 is jailbroken on iOS 6.1.2 and I was able to install the update due to my phone being factory unlocked. The update won’t instal if you unlocked by a the jailbreak(hacktivated)

  • zooz

Installed the update, I’m not getting more any 3g or 4g connection, just EDGE. I have a 3gs and l’m located in Raleigh, NC. I have an unlocked iPhone.

  • Search for nypd5001 video on youtube he explains how you get OTA download, also to whatever neighborhood the phone is registered to earning ADRESS if that address has an updated LTE or 4g Antennas ony then you will receive the OTA carrier update and either way you have to manually enter Into Settings–>General–>About tab and it will pop up, and for Carrrie it has to say 14.1 again that is not for iPhones NOT iPads remember don’t confuse 2 of them!

  • Ok so I have two unlocked iphone 4 on the Tmobile network. The update did not pop up automatically. What I had to do was to go to the Settings->About for the update to pop up. Once the update was complete I got visual voice mail working. Note: the LTE update which is included will obviously not work for the iPhone 4. Its only for the 5. The iPhone 4 only gets visual VM support and other minor mods such as MMS etc.

  • My iPhone 5 is jailbroken and I received the OTA update yesterday. The only thing I do not like is that I cannot use my Hotspot anymore. I have to pay for it now.

  • I love the visual voicemail after I installed it 🙂

  • Don’t listen this “carrier” update locked my phone iphone 5. Unusable now. Called tmobile. No assistance given. Every call routes to Verizon. Had visual voicemail for all of 3 hours. Now I have an expensive itouch

    • Update: I have called tmobile and I have gone into the store. They both suggest I go to verizon to get the phone “re unlocked”. I thought the phone shipped unlocked. My phone was working just fine before this update. Now all I have is a stupid 4 g indicator and no actual service. And no assistance. I need to remove this carrier update asap.

      • UPDATE! I fixed it! Finally removed the carrier update Whew! And since none of you wanted to help me Im not telling you the process to remove it. :-p

  • Christopher Hale

Loaded the carrier update on my factory unlocked iPhone 4. I lost tethering which I was getting for free due to an oversight but I didn’t use it anyway. However visual voicemail and MMS work great. My iPhone is finally and iPhone on T-Mobile. Oh and they re-factored the spectrum in our area and now I get 3G too.

  • Steve Unger

Ok folks here’s how to do it.
Go to settings, then about, then click in phones name.
Read it and click back, when you click back it will tell you the carrier update as been installed and poof, your update is done.
Visual voicemail comes back, 4g comes in and your apn settings will auto populate for MMS. I’ve done this on an iPhone 4 and 5.

  • rcarlosnyc

I have an AT&T iPhone 5 that has been factory unlocked. I also have it jailbroken with 6.1.2 firmware.

I got the T-Mobile 14.1 carrier update and it installed with no problems. I also have TetherMe installed. I am still able to tether using T-Mobile’s 4G. I didn’t lose the option with the 14.1 carrier update.

  • The carrier update works on prepaid plans too?

  • Raymond Boyle

T-Mo just pushed an update to my Apple unlocked iPhone 5. The update created the LTE slide bar. I’m in Minneapolis and I’ll be happy to see the end of Edge !

  • Ruben James

A few of my pals got the update on their unlocked iPhone 5s and so far, they like it. T-Mobile hasn’t added LTE to Denver just yet, so they are still limited to the 2G networks for now. I bought the most recent iPhone 5, so lucky for me I can still access the 4G network for the time being. Last weekend, I went on a small holiday from work at DISH and got to try out the new LTE network in Las Vegas. During the trip, I was able to keep up with my shows using the DISH Anywhere app on my phone and as a result of using LTE, streaming quality was fantastic.

  • Chuck

Go to cydia surch t mobile setup install and u got it I did it on my 4s and 5 u get everything

  • Kenny Mac

How do you uninstall the hack? I tried resetting and deleting the content under reset in settings. I restored the phone and all. Still have the effects of the update but I think I’m being throttled so I just wanna get my phone back to its normal state. Last night it was moving lightening fast I downloaded 4 movies all at once in under 20 mins. This morning my speeds started out extra slow then I tried again a Lil later lightening fast again. So I downloaded an album to test the speeds and got it in under a min but my speeds are back down again. How do I fix this can anybody help? Thanks in advance!

  • Kenny Mac

How do i get my carrier back to normal, I installed the update yesterday and saw major improvements. How ever… today
my network speeds seem to be throttled. I didn’t get any notices from my service provider stating that my data has reached it’s limit and is being throttled. I know that something isn’t right I just wanna go back to the stock settings. I tried settings/ general/reset and delete all settings and content and restoring from backup. “Still” the settings from the carrier update are in effect. Can anybody help please? Thanks in advance!
