Bloomberg: Samsung in race with Apple to get wristwatch to market

By , Mar 19, 2013

iPhone Wrist (Yrving Torrealba 002)

We’ve heard a lot of talk in recent months that Apple is working on a wristwatch-like device. And it could be ready to launch as soon as this year. We’ve also seen some alleged leaked screenshot images that suggest Samsung is working on a similar product.

Tonight, Bloomberg is out with a new report that adds significant weight to both rumors, claiming that not only are both companies preparing wearable devices that perform similar functions as smartphones, but they’re both racing to get them to market…

From Bloomberg’s Jungah Lee:

“Samsung Electronics Co. (005930) is developing a wristwatch as Asia’s biggest technology company races against Apple Inc. (AAPL) to create a new industry of wearable devices that perform similar tasks as smartphones.

“We’ve been preparing the watch product for so long,” Lee Young Hee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business, said during an interview in Seoul. “We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them.”

Although there was no indication of what features the watch might have, or what its price will be, the fact that a Samsung executive confirmed that the company is working on one is interesting. You’d never hear an Apple exec talk about future product plans.

But you can bet that if Samsung is working on one, Apple is too. In anticipation of the inevitable saturation of the handset market, both companies are looking for other product lines. And if that’s not enough proof the iWatch is real, Bloomberg reiterates it:

“Apple seeks to introduce its wristwatch device as soon as this year, said one of the people familiar, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren’t public.

The features under consideration by the Cupertino, California-based company include letting users make calls, see the identity of incoming callers and check map coordinates, one of the people said. It would also house a pedometer for counting steps and sensors for monitoring health-related data, such as heart rates, this person said.”

Previous reports claimed that Apple has a team of over 100 designers working on the wristwatch-like device. It’s said to run a reworked version of iOS, and the company is looking to get its battery life up to 4-5 days, although it’s been struggling to get it past 2 or 3.

Keep an eye on this space because it’s about to get really interesting. Both Samsung, with its S Health software, and Apple, with the likes of Jony Ive in its corner, have the abilities and the resources to do some impressive things with smartphone-connected watches.

What are your thoughts here? What would you like to see as far as smartwatches from these two tech giants?

I would like to see Samsung release theirs first then Apple release their version a day later. I wouldn’t want to see Apple release theirs first then Samesung delay their release… Really get a good idea of who’s innovating that way.

      Retard.

    • bw00ds

Your logic makes no sense. “Innovation” does not mean “the one that comes out later than the first one.”

he is trying to be sarcastic that samsung inovating by copy others

      • BoardDWorld

I’m saying I would like to see what an original product from Samsung looks like before it is influenced by Apple.

      • trumpet444

I’m with you 100%. I love true competition bc we (as consumers) always come out with the best options. I don’t want to see a bunch of watches that look like another.

Prototype in pic doubles as a magnifier ?

I hope samsung releases first, just so the Android Fans say “Samsung is so innovative” and I could answer “LOL Apple planned it’s watch for a much longer time. Check the web”

    • http://twitter.com/rlmeena Roshan

Are you saying this just because you fear Samsung might release smartwatch earlier?

    • bw00ds

This statement of yours just shows how ridiculous fanboys can be sometimes. If Samsung comes out first, so what if Apple has been planning one for a much longer time? What an utterly stupid thing to say…

      • Guest

You are a real retard. Someone should shoot your for your abnormal stupidity.

      • iphone4life

        Grow up

    • trumpet444

You’re such a pathetic fanboy. Sony actually has a ‘smartwatch’ on the market now and has for over a year. It’s kind of crappy but it’s there. Oh and this is typed on an iPhone, so don’t attempt to peg me as an android fanboy either

Lay down on a knife, retard.

Samdung trying its best to copy apple again..

    • bw00ds

How is Samsung “copying” Apple when neither has a product out yet?

      • http://www.facebook.com/tafk1 Taf Khan

If Apple are going to do it, Samsung will follow Apple. Apple lead, Samsung follow. It’s obvious in the media, that’s enough for others to try do the same. We all know all about Samsung copying antics already… They want to be Apple.

      • SoCoMagNuM

You do realize that smart watches are already on the market right? Lol Apple isnt the first once again. Apple wasn’t first at anything ever. They always STOLE someones idea and made it their own. Just quote steve jobs. “Good Artist copy. Great Artist steal” Samsung good artist since they “copy” while Apple “Steals” others ideas and pass them along as theirs.

    • trumpet444

Yeah, except that Sony already has a ‘smartwatch’ out now. And has for over a year. Motorola put one out over a year ago as well. If you wanna play blind fanboy games you could say that Apple is just copying them, but that would just be stupid. Might as well accuse Volkswagen of copying Audi because they both have 4 door sedans on the market.

      • http://www.facebook.com/tafk1 Taf Khan

VW and Audi part of same group, bad example. Take ur point on other SMART watches but everyone knows that Apple and Samsung are the two top dogs. These two companies will watch each other very carefully and compete against each other. If either bring a smart watch out it could see a boom in SMART watch sales that Sony or LG could never achieve.

      • s0me

Volkswagen and Audi are VAG (Volkswagen Audi Group) wich own Seat and Skoda, yes they “copy” themselves alot.
Evereything that Samsung makes is bad or a copy after Apple even if its better…

  • http://www.facebook.com/reynold.andika.336 Reynold Andika

trust me, apple will make it first. because shamesung is waiting for something to copy and say it’s a normal generic shape of every smartwatch

    • bigzjoseph

      Shamesung……. Nice

        Shame-sung & Same-sung…. lol

      • digger

Their name is Samsung. It seems apple fanboys have difficulties remembering non-apple brand or company names.

      • felixtaf

IS that so.. Bcoz evrytime I see a Samesung device – I see Apple there… So am a litl confused in the brand…

      • digger

You are probably confusing your iPhone for a Samsung device, or looking at a Samsung device, and wishing it WAS an Apple one.

      • felixtaf

NO confusion here bro.. iPhone 2G, 3G-3Gs, 4-4S, 5-5S(may be). And not like Samesung… S3, S4, S3 mini, Note 2, Note 8 etc.. (looks same with different size, specs n name…). Go to GSMARENA and click Samsung and you will know y I called them SAMESUNG!

The level of fanboyism in the comments here is making me cringe. Who gives a shit which comes out first and who’s copying who. We will all choose which one is best for us and we all win.

    • http://www.facebook.com/justin.thurmond Justin Thurmond

I didnt take it as fanboyism. I took the comments as honest opinion on a real issue of innovation. Ill back this too, if the tables were turned, and samsung and apple were vice versa in every way, i think the same idea/comment would be said…

    • SoCoMagNuM

Hurray for someone with sense on these forums. In the end we the consumer should win..not battle it out on forums like 2 year olds. Let Apple and Samsung do the battling. Let us enjoy the device of our choosing and embrace the copious of technology that orbits around us.

  • felixtaf

“Its easy to copy rumours” – Samsung

  • iphone4life

With Samsung posting screens before apple, I wonder who will be copying who now. Obviously they both have their ideas of what a smart phone should be. No need to call names, as they are both great companies (and you have to admit, unless you are a blind slug under a fanboy rock) that Samsung has done pretty good with their software in the SG3 and SG4, where it seems iOS has stagnated for the last 5 years. I love my iPhone, and won’t change any time soon, but you have to respect.

    • SoCoMagNuM

You my friend represent few here (and a mean few) that realize that all that infactuation over a device isnt necessary. Both devices are great just some prefer one over the other…..and thats ok. Takes different strokes. In the end we the consumer should win. Let Apple and Samsung battle it out…their the competitors. We the consumer should win in the end. That’s our job…not battle it out on a blog. I too realized how stagnant iOS had become thats why i chose to go galaxy 3 instead of iPhone 5. Havent regret my purchase either. Each is ones own.

      • http://www.facebook.com/joe.jonsen Joe Jonsen

        no… iphones are better..FACT

      • SoCoMagNuM

Actually your narrowminded opinions have no credit to me what so ever…now thats some FACT for ya.

      • iphone4life

I agree 100%.. With today’s announcement of 6.1.3 no longer working with evasi0n, who is Apple helping? The only reason I have stuck with my iPhone is because I can jailbreak it. Maybe I have to seriously think about the SG3 or SG4, and retire my beloved iPhone 4s.

      • SoCoMagNuM

You should definitely give it a shot. What you got to lose? If you dont like it theres other options and/or stick with iPhone. I made the jump last year and haven’t looked back

  • iamnotfan

    Too much of Technology
    Yet we gonna feel fulfilled

    • http://www.facebook.com/tafk1 Taf Khan

I would feel fulfilled if I felt we had seen the best of a devices capability before the next gen was released. The fact is the Tegra 3 or A5 cpu’s were never used to full potential by most developers before the new CPU was introduced. This is something we never see with game consoles. With mobiles devices it’s case of keeping up with what we as consumers expect.

  • http://twitter.com/_MitchellPetrie Mitchell Petrie

I’m not sure i could justify the use of a smartwatch, i’d like being able to use it for music controls while driving or in the gym etc but im not sure what kind of features it would offer. what does anyone else think?

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.jonsen Joe Jonsen

ummm but samsungs will suuuuck cause it uses android…lol

    • SoCoMagNuM

So does your logic. One in the same… l o l

To be honest, I was introduced to Jailbreak to get cracked apps. In my country there was no app store at that time (2008-2009). I started with an ultrasn0w unlocked (used) iPhone 3G. Later I realized how to buy apps from US appstore and I said “NO” to app piracy in 2010. And am impressed by themes, tweaks etc in Jailbreak. I loved it, love it and will love it. Now am jailbreaking iPhone for frnds & family.

Y I love jailbreak? Because of Ayecon (Brought me back to winterboard), IntelliscreenX, Barrel, NCSettings, SBSettings etc. I love iPhone, iOS, Jailbreak and iDB! Listening to your podcast now… Good Job again…
