Worried that Cydia will be too slow after the jailbreak? Don’t worry too much

Reloading Data Cydia

It’s the same story with almost every jailbreak. The new jailbreak is released, and folks rush to download all of their favorite jailbreak apps and tweaks. The result is a less than primed experience due to the stress that this places on Cydia and the repos hosting the various packages. After a new jailbreak is released, it usually takes a few days for everything to calm down to somewhat normal levels.

This time around, though, Saurik, and the repo managers appear to be taking preemptive actions to ensure a smoother experience immediately post jailbreak release. While nothing is assured until the inevitable deluge of user requests places stress on the system, you should look forward to a much better experience than in times past.

The big difference this time around has to do with how Cydia will be deployed at jailbreak. At Saurik’s request, it appears that Planetbeing and the rest of the evad3rs team behind the iOS 6 jailbreak will deploy a “pre-primed” version of Cydia at jailbreak. This means that Cydia will no longer have to go out and request the entire package catalogue like normal. Instead, Cydia will already have a package catalogue from all of the default repositories such as ModMyi, BigBoss, etc.

This, as Saurik explains, is what really places the stress on Cydia immediately after a jailbreak is released. Now that a full refresh of all of the repos will not be required, the Cydia experience should be much smoother after the jailbreak is pushed to the public.

It really is an interesting conversation, and I recommend you read the full thread over at Reddit. Both Saurik and BigBoss repo manager, 0ptimo, chime in with regard to Cydia stability, repo mirrors, and more. Insightful to say the least.

Jeff, do you have any idea of how the jailbreak will be implemented? I mean, and I don’t know much on the subject, how will I be jailbreaking my iDevices? Redsnow? Absinth? Which will be the easiest way?

He’s probably going to make a video showing as soon as the jailbreak is live, so just be patient.

    Very smart idea!

Sebastein, I really want you to do an article about the best/most useful jailbreak tweaks as soon as the new jailbreak is out. This will be my first jailbreak as the iPhone 5 is my first personal iOS device and I’m sure there are others out there who would be looking for such an article, a sum-up of the tweaks if you will. :)

the usual: bitesms; intelliscreenX; bulletin; ncsettings; protube; bridge; springtomize (if the official gets released); dashboard X; f.lux; folderenhancer; multiiconmover; iFile; ipsum; jukebox; killbackground (idk if this tweak has iOS 6 support yet); Auxo; LowPowerBanner; Mywi; NCquickDismiss; passwordpilot; SwipeSelection; Zephyr; and 3G unrestrictor

      • http://twitter.com/asafmoraz Asaf Moraz

While intelliscreenx installed, believe me: you don’t need bitesms lol

        Jamie Tilden yeah, my bad

        @port87:disqus thank you :)

      • Masrad

and don’t forget xcon for those pesky apps that want “unmodified” iOS’s!!

  • Martin

What would also help is if they release it for OS X first then Windows a couple of days later.

    • http://twitter.com/danielbt daniel bonnells

Lol yeah if they wan’t to be verbally destroyed by half the planet.

    • Mikee

      No. Just no.

    • http://www.facebook.com/liamsagooch Liam Googolplex Merlyn

Why Mac first? Seems a bit biased

      • Martin

Lol I was just kidding. But I do vaguely remember this happening a few releases ago. I was a Windows user then and I was pretty mad.

      • blu

I think that was due to the development of the Jailbreak, Mac’s could do it, Windows could not initially.

      • http://twitter.com/martinbusek Martin Busek

Cos windows sucks balls. Get a mac :)

      • http://www.facebook.com/liamsagooch Liam Googolplex Merlyn

I actually run both. What about Windows do you think sucks? I’ve been a life-long Mac user and I can still see that both OS’s are great.

    • blu

And what purpose would that serve?
Maybe they should release it for Windows first instead?

      • http://twitter.com/jalexcarter Jordan Carter

it serves the purpose of not having millions of people trying to download the same things at the same time and not causing cydia to run extremely slow like they are trying to prevent as this article clearly explains, duh. and yeah they could release it for windows or mac first, it doesn’t really matter which one, everyone knows someone with either operating system. any other idiotic questions i can answer for you???

      • blu

I know no one with a Mac.
I was being sarcastic saying it should be released on Windows first.
Seems they have a good handle on it this time, but we shall see soon.

      • http://twitter.com/jalexcarter Jordan Carter

you dont know anyone running OS X? thats a surprise, you must not know very many people. they can release it on windows for you then. im running both operating systems on my mac so it doesn’t make a difference to me.

      • blu

I could know 90% of computer owners and not know anyone with a Mac. Why is that so surprising?

      • http://www.facebook.com/joe.jonsen Joe Jonsen

        PCs suck

      • Meek Redd

hey how are you running both OSs? i’ve been looking for a reliable system and haven’t found one yet. thanks

      • mafo5000

You can dual boot a Mac to boot Windows. In fact you can triple boot using refit to run Mac, Linux, and Windows. Google it or youtube it.

      • http://www.facebook.com/joe.jonsen Joe Jonsen

no cause iPhone is a mac product..

      • http://twitter.com/ytos86 Yaseen AlSuwaidan

iPhone is an Apple product not Mac. However, mac is an Apple product, too.

      • Wassim Omais

The devs are working on macs and using OS X, keep that it mind.

  • http://www.facebook.com/trevorsalmon Trevor Salmon

I’ve been coming to iDB at least every hour since yesterday just hoping that the jailbreak will be released. I’m happy to know that everything is being ironed out well so it will be a hopeful painless process to jailbreak.

      • Nitay

So iDownloadBlog – Awesomeness = iOS + Jailbreak?

      • Masrad

Nooo it means Hard work+Skill+Evad3rs Team = Jailbreak Jailbreak+IDB=Ad Revenue lol

  • http://aalaap.com Aalaap Ghag

That’s a good idea, of course, but perhaps having a CDN would also help. Does anyone know if Cydia already has a CDN?

  • http://www.facebook.com/sidney.owsley Sidney Owsley

I am new to this jailbreaking and Cydia thing. I just had ATT unlock my
phone since my contract expired. How do I get Cydia on my iphone 4?

  • http://twitter.com/iPh1ps99 iPh1ps99

A smoother and nicer UI in Cydia would be cool!

  • Joe Benning

    Badass! Can’t wait! Thanks, Saurik!

  • voyaflexel

We will jailbreak from apple’s prison soon. I heard that someone already found key named cydia of apple pirson.

got my 2 IPhones ready to jailbreak

  • FrankensteinBlack

Nooo, not yet. I’m on the “wise-man” iPhone “S” model buying cycle (3Gs, 4s, etc. which is always a better product, ALWAYS) and this JB will probably be patch by the time the 128GB iPhone 5S model ships mid year. Darn it! :^(…

My plan is to install the following tweaks after i jailbreak:
    1. IntelliScreenX
    2. Springtomize 2
    3. Auxo
    4. Zephyr
    5. Infiniboard
Those are the only awesome tweaks that i use on my iPhone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/bob.arker.731 Bob Arker

Guess what, it didn’t work. Cydia is not even usable now.

  • http://twitter.com/thanksfor1984 Chris Rankin

Everything is all bogged down right now– barley any repos are loading all 500 internal errors or timeouts

  • Saint Aron

Is adding sources painfully slow for anyone else?
