iPad 3 (white, flat, finger on Safari)

Just days after a new ‘Ultimate’ iPad SKU was discovered in iOS code strings, Apple on Tuesday launched the rumored 128GB fourth-generation iPad with Retina display. Corroborating retail sources, Apple said that the new storage option carries a $100 premium over the 64GB full-size iPad, which starts at $699 for the Wi-Fi-only version. In other words, a 128GB Wi-Fi-only iPad 4 will set you back $799, or $929 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model. Both are available in black or white starting Tuesday, February 5, via Apple’s online and brick-and-mortar stores as well as through select Apple Authorized Resellers…

I love Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller’s comment in a media release that pitches the iPad as a replacement for your “old PC” (emphasis mine):

With more than 120 million iPads sold, it’s clear that customers around the world love their iPads, and everyday they are finding more great reasons to work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs.

With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs.

The tablet comes preloaded with iOS 6.1 that launched yesterday as a free software update for existing iDevices.

Apple also reiterated how virtually all of the Fortune 500 and over 85 percent of the Global 500 corporations are currently deploying or testing iPad.

We also learned that Apple now has over ten million iWork users, 800,000 App Store apps, of which more than 300,000 apps are designed specifically for the iPad, more than 5,000 newspapers and magazines in Newsstand and north of 1.5 million books on the iBookstore.

  • Awwwww Yaaaaa

  • Not bad, 100$ more for 64GB of storage. Better than just 16GB more

    • Guest

Not bad? I recently bought myself an SSD with 250GB for 170$ ! That is not bad! But definately not 64Gb for 100$ sorry..

      • Kurt

you pay apple 300 dollars for the 128 gb

      • batongxue

250GB for 170$. This is even expensive.

Normally, the high-end 256GB ssds would cost about 140 on Amazon

  • Eric Armstrong

Title is contradictory. If they launched the iPad it should be available today. In reality, they have only ANNOUNCED it at this point.

I see you guys have yet to take my advice and hire an editor.

Ouch, already five people dislike my comment??

I love this blog, and Christian’s articles are often some of the most interesting. But that doesn’t change the fact that these articles are littered with mistakes.

I want to see the continued success of iDB. But this blog isn’t going to make it to the next level without hiring a solid editor.

    A6X + 128 GB + Jailbreak = Best tablet ever

    • FabianPVD

      Then imagine a 128GB iPad Mini + Retina + A1337X = OH SHIT.

      • Damn Thats Alot man .lol . The Best Ipad in the World 🙂

  • Even if the iPad were 1TB, it will never take the place of PC. There are so much you can do with your pc. If there is one thing that won’t work when it comes to Apple sweet talk of technology, it’s that iPad or Tablets will never take the place of PC.

Unless Apple makes a Mac OSX iPad. It’s going to happen some day.

      • Mohammad Ridwan

        They won’t make “Refrigerator +Toaster”

      • LOL, not until after Tim Cook passes away.

      • Mr.Ocean

This would be just plain awesome! But its probably never going to happen… The only thing I see apple doing is merging iOS & OSX, which IMO is not a good thing.

      • Johnathan Jennings

Well you see it could be a good thing. It would give you a full experience of having a full computer, right there on your tablet. That is the future of tablets and right now Microsoft is attempting to do that with the Surface. I hope Apple merges iOS 7 with OSX so you can truly replace your computer with your iPad.

      • Mr.Ocean

The Merging of OSX & iOS obviously does have some positive aspects… especially for the iPad. But OSX shouldn’t be radically simplified. I don’t want a mobile os on my Mac.
Apple should not go “back to the mac” they rather need to bring some OSX features to the iPad.

      • Johnathan Jennings

That’s what I’m saying buh. No features are to be taken away from Mac OSX. Only features gained on both OSX and iOSX

  • NoBrainer

Well i would rather get myself an Macbook Air than an iPad for a thousand bucks..

    • tyke

I agree. The price of the iPad should define its own limits so it doesn’t overlap into another (more capable) product’s range (like, the MacBook Air), which Apple doesn’t seem to realize, yet.

      • Matthew

Yeh but the WiFi only model is $800.

      • Siv

      • Matthew

I meant that everybody is saying it’s $1,000 but they are $200 bucks off.

      • Guest

Still i would get me a 16Gb iPad with 3G for 629$ + 250GB SSD (149$) from Samsung and would end up with more than double the space but for less money… the 128GB models are IMO for dumb people with absolutely no clue for knowing what they can get for their money…

    • So this 128GB iOS is not for my cheap 2011 MBA with 128GB space only…

Not like I can have 128GB to sync to it OR 128GB space to keep a backup on my MBA lol…

    • i already have a mac book pro so a 16 gig ipad is fine for me

    • Yeah me too man !!

  • ReanimationXP

Unbelievable. I wrote a letter to Tim Cook a long time ago about how ridiculous it is that the 16gb upgrade going from the base model (16gb) to 32gb (16gb + 16gb) costs $100, when I can buy a 64gb microSDHC for around $30.

I figured eventually they’d lower 32gb to the base tier and help the situation a little bit, but no, they add an ‘ultimate’ tier. Keep raping my wallet for space Apple. This pisses me off.

    Feb 5.
Then I guess iPad 5 won’t arrive in March?
    Maybe until Summer or Autumn

    • It’s just an upgrade in storage capacity… They could update the hardware in March, but still bump capacity now. I realize a March launch is unlikely, anyway, because the iPad 4 launched in October, but I can still dream

      • batongxue

Actually I do not like such high frequency of putting out new models.
To me, once a year would be absolutely enough.
And, as a matter of fact, most people would not buy new gadgets before one or two years.

      • Unfortunately, that small pile of left overs from “most people” is almost the population of a country and Crapple won’t stop taking advantage of them when they can.

  • An ipad will never replace a PC as I can use flash on a PC

    • Matthew

You can get flash on an iPad. Just download puffin. It works great!

  • I wouldn’t mind an iPad with 128. But just for the sake of dreaming. It would be nice if they would just cut out the MacBook Air and have the full size iPad with 256gig running Mac OS X and then leave the iPad mini running iOS. Well I can dream

  • James

I see Apple ca still keep a secret and suprise us a llitle. Lol.

    • James

  • Irfan Tarique

The increase in storage means that iOS 7 is going to be loaded with new data !

  • Haha

A lot of impulsive buyers would empty their wallets almost immediadely for this one and then…. a new generation comes out later this year. Heart broken and disappointed in 3…2……1

  • Kurt

    300 dollars for a 128gb card! YES!!!!!

  • pfff more of the same

  • pffff…more of the same

  • Let’s face it! Apple will keep introducing something new to the market and people won’t just stop buying it. Crazy over upgrades? You might wanna start convincing yourself now. Indeed a huge stash on one’s savings, whatever, go make yourself happy!
