It’s almost here, ladies and gentlemen. I know we say this before every jailbreak, but this truly is the most highly anticipated jailbreak to ever hit the community.

Just consider it for a minute: There a more devices supported with this jailbreak than ever before, and there are perhaps many people out there that have never had a taste of jailbreaking before who are anticipating their first time.

Couple this with the fact that it’s been a very long time since we’ve had a jailbreak to begin with, and you can kind of see where I’m going with this. We’re all very excited, but don’t get into so much a frenzy that you forget to cover some essential basics when it comes to preparing for the iOS 6.1 jailbreak. Be prepared, and take these steps.

Step 1: Evaluate the situation

First, you need to find out whether or not your device is even jailbreakble to begin with. Chances are very high that your device is supported, but it always helps to double check. You can read our post highlighting all of the supported devices, but almost every recent device, and even some not so recent devices made the cut. In fact, it would be easier to show you which devices are not supported, because that list is smaller than the ones that are.

These devices are not supported:

  • iPhone 2G
  • iPhone 3G
  • iPod Touch 1G
  • iPod touch 2G
  • iPod touch 3G
  • iPad 1
  • Apple TV 3

Anything outside of these devices can be jailbroken with the upcoming jailbreak

Step 2: Back it up!

If you aren’t already jailbroken on some older firmware, then this step is easy. Simply use iTunes or iCloud to back up your device. Double check, no triple check, to make sure that everything is safe and secure before you even think about jailbreaking. Do this now, so that you don’t have to do so at the very last minute.

If you’re jailbroken, then you can use a tool like PkgBackup to back up all of your Cydia tweaks and apps.

Step 3: Restore to the iOS 6.1

Once you’ve backed up your device, go ahead and restore to iOS 6.1. If history is anything to go by, I always recommend a fresh and clean installation when preparing for a jailbreak. Yes, you can choose to just do a simple upgrade, but make sure it’s an upgrade using iTunes, not an OTA delta upgrade using the Settings > General > Software update feature found on your device. Again, do not use the software update method found on the iPhone, use iTunes instead. The evad3rs team has recommended this, and in the past, users have had problems when trying to jailbreak delta upgraded firmware. Trust me on this.

Step 4: Read iDownloadBlog

As if we had to tell you this! This week we’ll be hitting you with all kinds of juicy tidbits regarding the most anticipated jailbreak in history, so you don’t want to miss it. We’ll also be making updates to this post as more pertinent information hits the wire, so stay tuned.

Step 5: Get plenty of rest on Saturday

While there’s always the possibility that the jailbreak could be released early, or could be delayed, chances are that it will hit sometime on Sunday. Sunday is relative, though, because the team that comprises the evad3rs has members located across the globe. What might be Sunday for them, might be Saturday, or Monday for someone else. In other words, keep it locked right here, and on our Twitter feed, for all of the latest info.

I updated from 6.0.2 to 6.1 through iTunes. Did not do a full restore. Will that be okay for a jailbreak?!.

  • Kingz01

Can it be released before sunday?. Like wednesday , thursday or friday?…

  • djmobil2

You forgot to tell the people on step 2 to grab their SHSH blobs if they are previously jailbroken and to grab their iOS 6.1 SHSH blobs after jailbreaking in case a downgrade is necessary in the future.

    • Tom

Doesn’t Cydia automatically save your blobs now?

      • djmobil2

It does, but you will want to save them to your PC as a precaution in case Cydia suffers for an inconvenient where you can’t pull the SHSH blobs from their servers (as it has occurred before) then you’ll be stuck without the possibility of creating a custom restore for downgrade.

      • Tom

Ahhh, OK. That sounds like the best plan then. I’ll update TinyUmbella tonight then.

  • Anyone else see the “absinthe v6” download on pod2gs blog?

yah they could but the deal is they want to make sure they give people enough time to update to ios 6.1 before apple pulls a fast one and releases ios 6.1.1 or 6.2 they can do that in a week 😉

  • i Did upgrade from itunes not restore is there any prob ?

  • honestly after the very little ios 6 gave me i will never update my device until a jailbreak comes out from now on…i only wanted ios 6 because of maps and boy wasnt that a disapointment

  • Carlos Briones

Honestly if it meant a quicker jailbreak, I think they should have waited til iOS 7 or at least the next iPhone. But I’m excited for this! Haven’t been jailbroken since September 21st. Anyone else notice iOS 6.1 runs a lot smoother? (ie. opening apps, typing, etc.)

  • It’s about time, I miss my XBMC tweak, and my free therthering tweak….

  • anyone know what will happen with AppSync or anything related to Hackulo on iOS 6.1 when jailbreak’s out?

  • I have upgraded my iPhone 5 via OTA update as soon as iOS 6.1 came but ur post suggests to update via iTunes. So now what should I do?

    • FabianPVD

Simply restore via iTunes so that it updated via iTunes and you should be fine.

  • luvzz me

I’ve been counting down days and nights since the initial release of iPhone 5. If this jailbreak isn’t coming out any sooner, apple, I’m heading the direction of that “asia 7 year itch”
jailbreak team, you guys are amazing! Thank you all for the dedications in hacking iDevices!

  • What are the odds of that, followed all the instructions giving and I was welcomed with “Congratulations your iPhone has been unlocked” Craigslist seller had no idea = )

  • Austin Skeens

Im new at this and If I accidentally updated through my settings on my phone, would that mean no jailbreak for me:(

    • No , it means you might have some issues while performing the jailbreak . Just restore your phone through iTunes . You’ll be ok.

      • Austin Skeens

        Thank you!

  • can i download the file to update by restore in iTunes is work or not

  • can i download firmware to restore in itunes is work or not

  • I already update 6.1 using OTA, what should i do? Can i undo it? Any tips?

    • Tom

Connect your phone to you computer.
      Restore 6.1 using the cable.

  • r u sure about this 6.1 untethered jailbreak

  • Call me newbie, but I’m confused: what does step 3: restore to 6.1 mean? Does it mean (1) I should just update to 6.1 using iTunes or (2) I should hit the Restore button in iTunes (after backing up of course) and set up as a new device? What’s the difference anyway? Do I need to download the 6.1 IPSW firmware found in the Download section on this blog?

  • hellac00l

What about using Tiny Umbrella? Should I backup my shsh blobs?

    • shoken

Always backup incase they become useful later on and cydia will also save it once for you once the jailbreak is out

  • Igor

If i already did an OTA update, can i still restore to clean 6.1 ?
    And if so, how ?

    • Zhaneo

Do a fresh restore from itunes…

      • Igor

HOW ??? just click restore iPhone in itunes ?
        without backing up ?

      • rain111

Good news next sunday ios 6.1 untethered jailbreak was release.

  • Matt

So I updated to iOS 6.1 straight from 6.0.2 by clicking “update” and not “restore”, then restored my iPhone with a back-up, I’m assuming this is the same as doing a restore considering it would of updated to 6.1 anyway? I really hope I did the right thing here.

  • Can anyone help i upgraded in the settings does this mean i can’t jailbreak?

    • Matt

Back up your phone through iTunes and then do a restore. Simply set up your iPhone from the backup when restore is complete.

      • Chelsea

I’m already on 6.1 update thru iTunes do I have to restore before I jailbreak when it’s released?

  • Is anyone else’s LTE acting funny? My LTE Isn’t even working properly after the update…

  • ReanimationXP

No mention of SHSH’s or APTickets..

  • Trey Coates

Umm, what happens if you updated to 6.1 through your iPhone, not iTunes?

    • DJ Garcia

You’re fucked go backup your shit on iTunes and reinstall iOS 6.1

  • Solid

Damn i used the OTA Delta upgrade from settings in my iPhone 5, now what???

    • rain111

restore from itunes? it’s not the end of the world you know

  • I upgraded my IPhone 4 from ios 5 to ios 6.1 OTA yesterday but this morning i restored it through ITunes as suggested above, will I be okay now with the untethered jailbreak?

  • James Redmond

does he mean 6.0.1 or 6.1.1?

  • jaefuma

    Newbie and confused:

    1. Okay, a bit confused by the backing up. Can I just back up my files manually? Like, using “iExploxer” or whatever, a retransfer the theme file or whatever over? Will Cydia remember the tweaks I’ve downloaded in the past and allow me to redownload? I don’t have anything super important on there, but I would be able to get the settings back. Do you have to buy another programs to have your settings restored?

    2. So, the steps are, back up, upgrade/restore your iphone to a totally clean 6.1 firm ware. And don’t restore from back up data? Or…restore? Also, will the tweaks in Cydia work (even ones that, well, previously didn’t like the “no folder badges” tweak?)? Will things that have name sensitive files (ex: icons for a theme) be affected? Will they have to be renamed?

Sorry if these are dumb questions. I get the whole jailbreak process in general, I’m just trying to figure out how to keep the files I have so they can carry over during the upgrade.
